Was playing Halo 3 today for old times sake and I noticed how unnecessary the three-round burst is with one-hit-kill enemies, like getting a headshot on Grunts and Jackals. You basically lose two rounds when the first round connects, and before you know it, you’ve depleted all your ammo and there’s not much you can do about it.
You think a firing mode option for the BR (or for all other weapons, maybe) would be good for Halo 4? Maybe for MM balance, the three-round burst would be less damaging but good for getting easier headshots while the basic single-round mode would be more powerful but requires more skill to pull off headshots, like the DMR in Reach. I’m sure it would work great for the BR, but the only problem would be that almost every other weapon would need some kind of firing mode switch (“What makes the BR special?” if you catch my drift), and it might cause a disturbance in the for- I mean, Matchmaking community.
Anyway…just a thought.
I actually fully approve of selective fire weapons in Halo.
It’ll give people different ways to play, but I think only some weapons should follow this. The AR for example shouldn’t have that switch. Actually, I think the BR should be the only weapon that should have it.
The ability to have multiple fire modes for a single weapon is a great idea. The debatable part is how the secondary fire mode is accessed.

I say d-pad down. It’s pretty easy to access.
I would put 4 grenade types in Halo 4 and give each d-pad directional a dedicated grenade type to switch to. I would implement secondary fire modes by having the player pick up “secondary ammo” which automatically modifies the function of the weapon without requiring any button presses from the user.
Why not makes sence to me.

Agreed.
This would mean the BR and DMR can both come back in one weapon for instance, same can go for a sort of fusion between Plasma Rifle and Repeater, SMGs could get burst vs automatic options.
It would add a bit more strategy to the game.
That being said, even with these examples, I think not every weapon should have selective firing modes. If you think about it, it’s only actually useful for weapons like the BR/DMR and some other weapons that are alike and could be merged into one gun. It wouldn’t make that much sense to have the AR get 2-3 firing modes for instance, or the Shotgun, or Pistol…
I like the idea of being able to have selective weapon fire. But the logic part of me does not like this.

Single fire should do less damaging then the 3 round burst. Not the other way around. It’s bad enough that the Assault Rifle uses 7.62x51mm Full Metal Jacket rounds. But they act like you’re firing pellet gun rounds at someone. Don’t make the weapons any more worse then they have to be.
Like the Halo 2 Beta, not zoomed is a 3 round burst. Zoomed is single fire shot.
I like the idea of it. Something similar to the Halo 2 demo where it was burst fire but single shot when it was scoped. It would add a little use to the D-pad as well.
