I’m quite sure that this option has been brought up hundreds of times, in suggestion for the upcoming Halo 4. However, I’d like to expand on that idea - why not battle UNSC, using the Elites? Of course, the weaponry options listed in the following is limited to what is available in Halo: Reach.
We could use the current Firefight standard as a method of comparison to Covenant species:
Of course, this idea needs quite a bit of tuning. I recommended Spartan-III’s as a replacement for Brutes as 1)They are physically stronger than Spartan-II’s, ala Brutes to Elites), and 2)Spartan-III’s do not have shields if I recall in Ghosts of Onyx, similar to Brutes.

Because fighting something as mindless as the Flood for extended periods of time becomes boring and repetitive? Their only tactic is to rush idiotically at the player, with no sort of weaponry to spice up the gameplay (unless you permit it for them).
Fighting the humans would be quite a different perspective, yes, but interesting at that.

How would the flood be boring? I would love a Covy FF but killing our own race in Halo that isn’t spartans would just be weird.
This idea has been brought up numerous times, however that doesn’t mean its not a good one.
What it essentially it would be is a mixture between ODST’s and Reach’s Firefight mode with GoW3’s Beast Mode. You’d take control of the Convenant and battle your way through countless waves of Spartans, ODST’s, Marines, even civilians. It would be awesome. I’m not sure how the weapon configuration would be tuned, however, at this point in time, it could only work if the player controls Elites only. Once you add in Drones, Brutes, Grunts, etc., things become waaaaaaay complicated, and since I’m not an employee of 343i, I don’t have to think of the ideas!
I could just imagine: ConvanentFight, Round 1. Start as a grunt, suicide plasma nade into ODST’s, as each new round begins, you have more options to choose from. Brutes become available in specific ranks, as well as Elites. You can call in a Phantom for backup support, or a coordinated Bugger attack. It would be awesome!
In Halo4 hunter’s could be UNSC mechs. But the covenant is not in H4 but we should still be able to see them in multiplayer. Depending on how things go maybe we will see them as x-covenant in campaign.
> That’s nice and all, but the Covenant aren’t the (main) enemies (if they are even in) in Halo 4.
Doesn’t need to be the main enemy; this is simply another addition that enhances the experience of Firefight, from a completely different perspective. Of course, in Halo 4, there are bound to be new aliens to combat in FF, but why exclude the Covenant given how long they’ve been a staple of the franchise?
I can definitely see this working, though.
I think that players should be able to call for AI backup this time around in FF. Maybe once per five rounds should the player be able to receive assistance from a few ODSTs, or a Warthog (similarly with the Covenant, Ghosts and some Jackals/Grunts) - using a device from an Ordnance or whatever.
The humans in Halo generally aren’t fun to fight against. That’s one of the reasons you never fought against humans when you played as the Arbiter in Halo 2.
I’m pretty sure Spartan 2s are stronger than 3s. 3 where made cheaply and mass produced. They weren’t selected for there genes either. It should be rebels, army, marines, Odsts, S2s, S3s, then heroes, then John 117 as boss wave.

Yes, but IIRC Spartan-III’s were physically superior, as they ingested far more steroids, didn’t they?
I forgot about the Insurrectionists. Yeah, they should definitely be included.
Should Noble Team/Blue Team comprise the boss wave?

The covenant can’t kill John, no one can. Half the covenant armada and a flood hive couldn’t finish him off.

Firefight is not meant to be canonically accurate.
I’m pretty sure two generic ODSTS can’t fight off hordes of Covenant either, you know.
Sounds good… But I’d rather have 343 focus on more enemy factions for regular Firefight before getting to something like Covy Firefight.
For example, despite 343 saying that the Covenant are not going to be an enemy in Halo 4, I’d still like to see them in Firefight (this is assuming if Halo 4 even has a Firefight mode). As much as I liked Reach’s Firefight, I feel that Bungie’s mistake was removing Drones or not adding The Flood to Firefight. Like I said, Reach’s Firefight is good, but eventually it gets boring.

343 never said that Covenant won’t be in Halo 4, that was what most people assumed. Even though the war is technically over, I think we will still see some small pockets of Covenant resistance.
