Firefight replaced by Skirmish

I’d be disappointed if Firefight came back exactly as it was in ODST and Reach. Maybe they could make it like a massive war with 30 or so Spartans (the players), Marines and ODST’s against bots? Who wouldn’t want to play this game mode at least once? They could have Scarab boss fights and loads of vehicles for players and enemies to use.
I’ve dubbed the idea: Skirmish, a great mix of multiplayer action against bots with story to the missions.

It would be less like fighting enemy waves over and over like Horde mode from other games and more like an all out war seen in Battlefield 4. No waves of enemies with set numbers to kill, just a nonstop battle. You want shelter and quiet? Get into your base where it’s safe. There would be objectives like saving stranded marines, disabling anti-air Wraiths and players could have the ability to call in extra backup or be able to request weapon drops from a Pelican. It could be about base defense but also with some thrown in offense objectives that require a full assault on the enemies base. Like a Scarab tank that players have to board so they can destroy it.

Maybe we could even pilot a Pelican to transport marines and other players to locations on the map? There could be maybe even more players at once to allow stuff like player brought reinforcements instead of just friendly AI bringing a Warthog to you. If the campaign is going to feature more squad command type stuff then maybe we could order friendly marines to attack, retreat/regroup, defend the base, follow my lead, etc. All the objectives are meant to aid you in defeating the enemy once they are completed.

Ultimately, you can win by defeating the “boss enemy” or by completely destroying the entire enemy base, which is heavily fortified. Some maps require you to beat the end boss to win. You can lose by eventually running out of respawns or having your base generator destroyed. Bosses can vary: Multiple Scarabs, monolithic Forerunner constructs, legendary Brute Chieftains (think Tartarus) with personal bodyguards, etc.

The idea is to make you feel like you are in a massive battle with chaos and destruction everywhere and you aren’t alone. Playing with friends would be a blast. “Hey, Kevin! Can you deliver a tank to us? We really need one!” -Joe…“Roger, I’m heading over in a Pelican but you guys need to be careful because that’s our last Scorpion.” -Kevin.
Who knows how that little story I made up will end :stuck_out_tongue: Maybe they’ll run out of tanks and have to do something crazy like hijack a Wraith. The possibilities are endless and you’ll be bragging to all the interbwebz that your Skirmish Squad is a force of nature.

These maps would have to be immense so they would get their own unique ones. Here’s a few ideas on some maps.

Strife- Battle the Covenant and Promethean armies in the frozen terrain of Installation 05 where plasma burns become the least of your worries once a blinding blizzard strikes the area. Awaken an ancient Forerunner war machine under the fields of ice and put an end to its extinction agenda.

“ONI says there’s something big underground, thaw out the ice and find out what it is.” - Sarah Palmer, UNSC Infinity

Example of what this map could look like

Arcadia- Fight to avenge the civilian casualties of Pirth City among it’s fresh ruins and its undamaged districts. If too many civilians die, the mission is a failure. Spartans are the first responders to the attack so in the first few minutes you won’t have any marines to help you. Try diverting some of your team early on to escort VIP’s to evac zones to ensure their safety, then focus on reclaiming the war-torn city.

“The trails of Pirth run red with the blood of the unworthy…” - Jul 'Mdama, Storm Covenant

Example of what to base this mission off of.

Crusade- Raid the holy cities of Sanghelios and eliminate the Sangheili Terrorist Jul 'Mdama to break the Storm Covenant’s hold of the planet. This mission will require an immense offensive effort, but beware, enemy squads have been ordered to infiltrate your base and cut off your supply of reinforcements.
“Jul wants to hide deep within a bunker with his personal guards and wait for his troops to cut off UNSC reinforcements. Show him that Spartans aren’t to be tested with hiding…” - Captain Lasky, UNSC Infinity
Example of what you’ll look like between matches :stuck_out_tongue:
Feel free to tell me what you think and if you have any ideas for a map, let me know!

Wouldn’t this be Firefight 3.0?

It’s hard to say whether we’ll get Firefight or Spartan Ops in Halo 5. Many people, including myself, have wanted larger scale firefights, whether it be normal players or bots. I like some of your ideas though.

OP-I love your ideas. +1

I guess it would be 3.0 :stuck_out_tongue: as long as that’s not the official title.

I want this so very badly. Hell, I might not even play competitive multiplayer but once in a great while if this is a thing.

I really hope there’s at least some form of Firefight gametype; Firefight was such a wonderful game mode.

Yeah this would be a great addition in my opinion, thanks for commenting!

Love the ideas. Hope something like this happens one day.

And of course, with that name, we will have Skirmishers

I can’t see Firefight working well with over 4 players, hordes of enemies and huge war vehicles. Halo Reach slows right down when there are a handful of enemies down range and a wraith raining death around you. I am aware that Reach is on ancient hardware but if the Halo 5 beta is any indication then we can’t realistically expect all out warfare with the Xbox One’s hardware.

However, I do think scarabs and other large vehicles like Litches would add so much awesome to the existing Firefight concept.

I think I have said it a few times now but, we really need Firefight to make a return, it’s the perfect middle ground between Matchmaking and Campaign.

I described a mode by the same name a little while back, (albeit vaguely) the main difference being that it was intended for regular gametypes and I suggested players would control everyone.

It’s around here somewhere…

It’s all here near the bottom (For anyone who hasn’t seen it)

Well the maps would become immense to compensate for all the action. I don’t think bringing back old Firefight would be really acceptable anymore. Of course it’ll always be better to have it than not have it. But it needs to be heavily improved on so it’s not just the game mode you play when your bored with all the other modes.

I still go back to Firefight in Reach every now and then, it’s the reason why my '360 is set up next to my Xbox One. I don’t agree that the “old” Firefight needs much of an overhaul. I think Halo 5’s new abilities and sandbox would already make a new Firefight feel a lot different than its successors but new features and options are always welcome.

Really cool ideas , Halo is perfect for a large scale battle game / gametype I would absolutely love this !

I would love to see it but I doubt that the Xbox One can handle much more AI than the Xbox 360 could in Reach due to increases in poly counts, diffuse and normal map quality, improved dynamic lighting and what I expect will be more extensive AI.

On massive maps the culling would have to be aggressive and that can really hurt how good a game looks.

I don’t believe that the Xbox One has the power but I would love to be proven wrong.

So, huge firefight with objectives? I’m up for a teamed up group of 10 at most. 30 seems a bit overboard. But otherwise I like this idea!

sounds cool, and I’d like to get it alongside classic firefight, I don’t see how this would replace it, there are too many differences

30 players is way too many. I’d honestly just double the norm and go with 8, then populate the players’ team with marines and ODST drops. Maybe after enough butt-kicking they could get some Spartan AIs to jump in as well.

I’m all for the concept of larger scale Firefight.

I would only be satisfied with Reach-esque firefight in Halo 5. It needs to be added back with any features it had at the very least although I like the idea OP definitely seems more entertaining.

To me, it sounds more like a Spartan Ops 2.0

Brilliant ideas! The community obviously wants something like this with themes like global battles cropping up in many threads. Hopefully 343 are listening! If it’s not in Halo 5, it should definitely be in Halo 6 or even its own spin-off.

Just a few ideas of mine to add: you get to choose where you spawn and whether you spawn as a soldier (frontline), a sniper, a pilot/vehicle specialist, or a commander (can order AI troops around). One player is designated ‘leader’ by vote and this player can issue orders to other players which they can respond to. If the vote is a tie, then the highest rank wins. The leader could have a different secondary colour or perhaps armour set to differentiate them from the other Spartans who should have a uniform military green colouration. The Spartans should have a mission briefing in-game at the start of a match, with all players standing to attention in front of an AI commander (Lasky or Del Rio) on a ship who explains the situation. Then, the players are allowed to move around and choose weapons, change armour and choose insertion method to the battlefield by interacting with different parts of the ship. The leader is given a budget of points which are allocated to choose reinforcements- with marines costing 1 point each, ODSTs 3 points each, Scorpions costing 10 points, Warthogs costing 5 points, siege bikes (I hope they’re added!) costing 3 points etc. The leader then calls in these reinforcements in with a cooldown time between each wave. Objectives, enemies and situations on the battlefield should be randomised so no two matches ever play the same.

I might be over-complicating it, but these ideas seem pretty good in my opinion.
