From the looks of it, Firefight is one of the most wanted features in Halo right along with playable Elites. Taking what was introduced in ODST and expanded further in Reach with full customization options to start with, I think the best way to improve Firefight is to include different gametypes. Defend point A for an ordinance drop, or attack a Scarab or something more creative. Include Flood wave defense mode with only Flood. Have it build a Proto-Gravemind as you play and then make you have to fight it. Have defenses you can set up. Turrets you can use on a map, but that you need a team to watch your back for. Put rewards in the game like a Pelican giving you a Warthog. Make the maps interesting like Black Ops zombies maps. Firefight has the potential to be a cooperative mode that you can spend hours on. For me, it was never very interesting to play (the exception to that would be Unearthed but that was it). I think Firefight gametypes, that don’t simply change the waves and your starting weapons but that actually add a purpose to the game, would be the answer.
And no, I’m not asking for Spartan Ops. I don’t care if it has a story or not, just that it has an objective and that it isn’t “go here and press this button” like everything in Halo 4. That objective could be “survive as long as you can” but then throw in tools to make it more interesting (as I was writing this, legendary weapons and the Pack-a-Punch came into mind). Spartan ops missions were all boring and repetitive. Make Firefight something we can keep memories from.
I honestly think the best thing they could do is to make it somewhat like How Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer was. Have it be hoard mode, but occasionally throw in an objective that needs to be done. Be it escorting someone in the area from point A to B, or holding down a certain position for x amount of time, or killing a VIP target before it gets away, ect. ect.
Completing the task would either give more lives, or Ordinance drops.
Yeah, that would work. Just something to keep me playing
One thing I would also love to see occur with Firefight is the ability to make fully in depth waves, sets, and rounds like we used to have in Reach, but I would also love if the game allowed (didn’t put into matchmaking firefight, but all allowed for) us to go up again waves of Marines, and Spartans. In Reach we were able to have Covenant with some marine weapons, but I would also like to just have the option to feel like I am going up against the UNSC without lighting up all my AI friends in Campaign.
i would actually be fine with a copy paste reach firefight with dif maps. could be pulled from a story level for all i care
YES! To this thread in general…
I am a huge fan of Firefight, it is a very important aspect of Halo as it stands firmly between the Campaign’s story driven missions and the all out PvP of Matchmaking.
Spartan Ops was fun but it has very little replay value as it feels like a low-budget secondary Campaign that was hastily tacked together. The story was the highlight but nothing you ever did in the actual missions felt like they had anything to do with the story.
Firefight can also get quite tense as in classic game types, you have a limited pool of lives and the enemies were always hitting from two sides.
Some of my favorite Halo moments spur from Firefight matches on Reach.
Reach really set the bar for customization in Halo, I was impressed with Halo 4’s armory but the custom game settings and lack of Firefight felt demoralizing somehow.
I would be so happy for 343 to include Firefight almost exactly the same as Reach’s but with maybe a few more options such as advanced enemy squad settings but the lack of evidence surrounding Firefight in Halo 5 has me worried.
Josh Holmes has ignored my queries and I’m guessing I’m not alone so we’ll just have to wait and see.
I don’t think my “little boy” heart could take it if they end up skipping Firefight this time, Halo 5 has so many interesting new mechanics, I can’t help but imagine some of the epic scenarios that could take place when reacting to wave after wave of Covenant forces with all of the new Spartan Abilities.
Firefight was one of the best things Bungie left us with, please honor their legacy 343 Industries.
