Firefight 3.0: my vision

WALL OF TEXT AHEAD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. (TL;DR in second post)

So I got the idea to make a thread dedicated to future ideas for Firefight in Halo 4 from seeing a previous thread on Firefight. This will be one my first post on this forum I believe, so go easy? :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve been a native Bungie forum go-er for a while now, but I decided to make the switch cause I like seeing Halo 4 content and ideas from people.

I’m going to be honest here. I do not like how the Firefight system is currently. Hopefully others will agree that a change is needed. It doesn’t have a very lasting appeal to it. In simpler terms, it just gets old quickly. I can play Black Ops Zombies for hours on end. They just perfected the formula for a wave based game. Horde from GoW is, in my opinion, also much easier to play for a long period of time. There’s also the MW3 Spec-Ops mode which is okay from time to time. Not my cup of tea.

What do all these other wave based modes have in common that Firefight doesn’t include? A currency based system. What’s the thrill of firefight? Survive and get points that count towards nothing? What a joy. You need to constantly be fighting to earn more weapons, upgrades, and ammo. That’s how I believe firefight should be. I’m going to break down my several ideas I’ve had and from some of I’ve saw from others.

First off, separate maps for the Firefight game mode is good. I don’t want them to take GoW and MW3’s approach and just put you on multiplayer maps. Also, I believe the wave, rounds, and sets have to go. Too complicated. I think it should just be a number based on what wave you are on. Much simpler. More than 4 players in a game would be nice, but sometimes games are extremely laggy with playing with just 3, so I see that as unlikely.

You should start out with just a pistol. Each Firefight map should be designed with a kind of designated spawn area/base, like normal. The base will contain reinforcements, weapons, and ammo, except we throw the points system away. We should have a currency based system. A kill or assist will award money and that money can be used to buy things in your base. Basic weapons such as the pistol, DMR, AR, or the BR would be available from the start at a relatively lower price than more powerful weapons. You should start off with the basis of Grunts and then it should work its way up and start mixing it up.

I think that the lives system also needs to go. One life for each wave only. If you die, you should be able to ā€œbuy back inā€ with a fair amount of cash, or wait it out until your team completes the wave. Something I’ve also saw, that all these other games include is the going down feature. Going down and being able to revive the player is a big deal in re-playablity. I’m not sure if this should be implemented to Halo though. In Gears of War after going down, the enemies can still kill you if they get close enough and very lethal weapons bypass downs and kill you instantly which I think would work better for Halo.

A boss every 10 rounds would be nice. I don’t just mean 3 Brute chieftans and a couple grunts and jackels. I want an actual boss. I don’t care if it’s not canocially correct. I wouldn’t mind fighting one of the Arbitars, a giant supersized Hunter, or Tartarus. I just want to fight a badass with a lot of health. Of course the boss would get stronger each time you faced him >:D Of course the end of the Boss round should be celebrated with a all skulls on Bonus round with no penalties. I also imagine the maps to be much larger scale to accompany with the air support I would like to be implemented. A new skull will be added every 10 rounds to increase difficulty and money multipliers will be added to compensate, but I can’t calculate that at the time.

The armory will be listed later on below.

Well that’s all I got for now. Consider this my little ā€œvisionā€ of what I’d like firefight to be like. If you don’t like what I have elaborate below and please don’t be harsh  Also, if you see anything I’ve left out or would like to add something please also say so. I feel as if my money system is a bit off in the price department so I need some constructive criticism!

TL;DR
Halo 4 should include a tweaked version of Firefight that uses a currency based system as to buy weapons, upgrades, and what not.

I think FF would be a waste of space unless we have 2 disks…

I agree with you on having 2 discs. A lot of game developers are starting to do it now.

Other than space issuses, I love this.

Thanks! I worked hard on this, hoping to keep it alive >_>

You know what I hate forum? That the repetitive threads about bloom and no bloom, highest skill, someone asking if there will be a halo 6? WTF, a thread as minor as asking you what you think chiefs armor looks like, and people that CONSTANTLY make new topics get more replies than me. It took me a good hour and a half to make this and what? To be pushed to the bottom of the page. At least give me a reply to keep this alive. Anything would help. So frustrated…

I can see it now…

At the end of every Set…
Instead of Hell Hounds, Elite Honor Guards.
Instead of coming down in a lightning bolt/teleportation. They uncloak from invisibility.
They can run fast, jump high, and look like the Halo 2 Elites in that one mission I forgot the name of…

This would be amazing…

Heretics.

this is quite similar to my idea, but to a more refined scale
you did a great job with the amounts of ā€œhalo dollarsā€ you get from enemies

i do not like the idea where you Buy weapons as you go though,
i like starting with an SMG or AR, and i don’t want to start with only a magnum when playing this game

Now I’m not saying that you need a TLDR section, but pretty much everything here can be summed into one word: pacing. That is all. Firefight (and L4D survival for that matter)is just a heap of boring mediocre sludge of a gametype. I would definetely take my sweet time playing ff if it was like this in H4. (as the same if L4D3 survival became like Killing Floor, but that’s a bit off topic)

I don’t necessarily agree with the specifics of your post, but you definitely got one thing right. If 343 wants to inject some replay value into Firefight, it needs to be a lot more progression based like -Yoink!- Zombies and Horde. As it stands, Reach FF puts you in one of 10 or so environments to play the same damn thing over and over again every 10 minutes. Each round and/or set needs to be different from the next. ODST did a good job with the different skulls and all, but I think we need to take that much further.

A currency based system, though not the most original system, is a great option. Allowing players to buy weapons, abilities, and access to new parts of the map would definitely make things more interesting.

I dont know if you mentioned this but what would be really cool in firefight is like a pretty decent sized map and its formated like invasions but instead of all players its either covenant or UNSC trying to take something over. Like its the player with a few of their own side’s A.I against the opposing side. I think it would kind of be like campaign but make it seem more like a battle. If 343 does someting like this that would be pretty cool, and they can have the traditional firefight games

I also think something really cool would be drop pods. When ODST came out i really hoped they let you spawn in the game ,atleast for the primary spawn, by coming down in a drop pod.

Broski, are you agitated?

Maybe because you ripped your Firefight idea from COD’s zombies is the reason no one is responding. It’s boring.

Personally, I would love to see a return to ODSTs version of Firefight–making it based on survival rather than seeing how many green blobs you can shoot per second.

As long as we have FF customization, I’ll vote for this EXCEPT lives should be kept in.

I don’t believe so. This is quite different from zombies, but if you want to make that the argument, I got a lot more replies since posting that, and many seem to agree actually. The way Firefight right now is BORING. This is how to change that. Thanks for the contribution of bumping this thread, lol.

Well I imagined the beginning enemies to just be a lot of grunts, as kind of a little kick-starter to help you earn dollars to buy the other weapons quite easily.

CONCLUSION:
OP wants MW3’s co-op mode in Halo 4.

sounds awesome.

Do not like. That way ā€œunhaloā€. I’m all for keeping FF a simple survival mode rather than MW3 survival mode, as a guy mentioned.
