I am really pleased with the recent ffa placement changes. I was ending each season onyx and last 3 over onyx 1800-but placing a mystifying plat 5 or diamond each pacement afterwards despite beating last season’s onyx 2000s. Highly ridiculous! This time i ended onyx 2059 last season and placed onyx 1581-over 360 csr better. Other are also noticing better placement ranks and most ppl are saying they make way more sense! Onyx 2000s qualifying onyx and onyx 1900s getting diamond 5 or 6. Way better than the average diamond 1 or plat 6 many were getting! And finally the champs last season werent getting a huge placement advantage by 343 punishing others unduly!
Even better i didnt get shunted 500 csr from champs and as a result finally could try and get it whereas before i would close the gap to 200 odd csr but not enough. I reached champ 75 last night so even more pleased thanks to my higher placement! Im not sure how 343 have changed the placements but finally they seem to reflect skill.
Has anyone else noticed improvements? And does anyone know what 343 did? Is it cos of the longer season helping 343 see more accurate mmr measurements for each player?
Wow. Congrats on finally getting to Champ!! I know it’s been a difficult road for you at times, but you kept at it. Good for you!!
I don’t have any feed back on new placements yet, but I hope what you’re saying is true. I usually take a day or two off at the beginning of the season, hoping to get games with or against players who are already ranked. Doesn’t seem to work though as I had games at the very end of this past, two month season where three of the four players on a team in Arena were still unranked.

Well for me matchmaking is broken. Never rank higher than diamond 3 and on FFA I was matching with champions most of the games, making it very unbalanced and frustrating. Then I go to arena and also playing against people that are well over my skill. I’m almost at the point to leave halo.

I had that problem for ages until i started getting used to it. Most ppl playing now are the champs or very nearly champs from last season so dont be too hard on yourself. Diamond 3 is still a great placement if you are aiming for onyx as you would expect to gain anout a divisions worth of csr. In fact i used to get diamond 1 or plat 6 after finishing onyx 1800+. The reality is that you place (going by past experience) around 1/3 of your potential csr lower so the system probably thinks you are onyx really and thats why you match champs. Your csr just needs to catch up to your higher mmr.
Congrats on Champ. Maybe one day we’ll all get there. The system to me is still broken as ever. It baffles me that I can’t get a single FFA match that doesn’t have unranked players! No consistency whatsoever (except that’s it’s inconsistent). I’m definitely still favoring longer seasons as I finally got into Onyx.

I’ve never been placed higher than diamond 3 in FFA also. First grading game was against Champ and two onyx (the other were already onyx in other lists) plus I had to give them a 200ms ping advantage. Didn’t stand a chance against them.
The second game was the same level of players again. Where’s the incentive to keep the average player playing.
The season before last I had average but respectable finishes against low onyx players (again giving them a massive connection advantage) and placed low/mid diamond. Why continually put me again them and rank me lower. For me its hard enough staying competitive against plat/diamond players when I’m playing from a foreign location. Is the population that low that there is no one else to play against. If so that’s pathetic after less than 12 months.
The “skill based” match-making in this game is retarded.

Thanks boss. I’m all for wrecking kids now that Doubles is back, FINALLY 343!!! I’m usually on by 22:00 or later but that’s gotta be like 03:00 in EU for you right? Weekends probably best but I’ll be watching for you!

After 10 matches rank diamond 5. My best ever. I think 343 lowered the ranks. On arena also unbalanced games.
Last season I got placed 1500 onyx after the placement matches which was a first seeing as how I would constantly get placed Diamond 5. I ended last season at about 2100 rating and after these 10 matches getting a Onyx 1700, I say something definitely changed.

That was what i thought. Maybe they adjusted the boundaries a little bit so that all players were ranked better or closer to tgeir true skill to give them more motivation to play? I mean the average non-onyx player isnt going to play more than 50 games a season. Maybe they wanted ranks closer to mmrs in placemebt this season? One person even suggested to me that some onyx spots held for non active players may have been removed, which might also be true.
Congrats on champion! I’ve seen you post a lot in the past about the problems with the ranking system, so it’s good to see you think it has now improved.
I was placed Diamond 3 in Slayer this season after the system putting me in Platinum 4 for 3 consecutive seasons despite outperforming those in my fireteam who were placed higher even when playing the same games. I also got placed Diamond 5 in Team Arena, whereas usually it’s high plat/low diamond, and Diamond 6 in Swat. The system does seem to have improved, but having said that I did face a lot of onyx/champions in my placement games which may be the only reason I was placed higher.
i hope you get a similar advance on your ranks and that you get at least that diamond!
