[Final Update] 'A Storage Solution' - Achievement

The Halo Reach achievement ‘A Storage Solution’ is currently broken. According to Trueachievement’s ‘Recent Winners’, it was last unlocked 21st January 2017 by ProTangent06705 and has since been reported by numerous sources as being unobtainable.

I understand an aged game isn’t a priority within 343i and quite frankly I am unaware if they themselves have control over the game itself. However, given that the achievement was in working order as of January and no update or hot fix is known to have been released for quite some time (maybe years), I find it rather strange that it would suddenly break.

Through raising this issue I am hoping to receive some clarity as to why this is the case; whether this was intentionally/accidentally (potential sever issues) cause by 343i; whether or not they are aware of this issue; furthermore whether or not they would/are considering fixing said achievement. Other than that I am interested if the community here on Waypoint is aware of a potential work around.

I have a vested interest in this achievement as I plan on obtaining all of the achievements in the near future. However, I do not want to commit to a game that has unobtainable achievements.

Source(s) (Reports of achievement being unobtainable):

It appears an update was indeed released for the game last year (8th October 2016). From what little information is available this patch addressed the frame-rate issues caused by backwards compatibility. However, the achievement was still obtained after this date and thus I can’t conclude whether or not there is a direct connection.

Any information on this issue is greatly appreciated. Looking for clarity.

It would be especially helpful if you could detail you experiences unlocking this achievement in question. There have been reports of this achievement being buggy as far back as of July 2016, so any information is appreciated.

Update[1]: Further investigation has uncovered that this achievement is obtainable. However, it appears to be extremely buggy and reported solutions rarely work.

Two known cases of the achievement unlocking post the supposed discontinued date. Both Darkroder92 & Mister Jeffa have unlocked this achievement respectively, Jeffa in February and Dark this month (April). I have messaged the above players in hopes they can provide any information regarding a solution to this problem. I will continue my investigation into this achievement and the supposed solution.

Update[2]: I have since spoke with Mister Jeffa who provided a lot of details surrounding his experience unlocking this achievement.

Transcript:
“Hello Mister Jeffa, I saw you comment on the TrueAchievements thread stating that you had unlocked the achievement ‘A Storage Solution’ on Halo Reach. I was wondering if you could reveal how you managed to unlock that achievement as it appears to be unobtainable for others. Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing back from you.” - Myself

“Hi, I just did what was needed and it worked for me, although it hasn’t given me a upload success since then. i don’t know why it worked and what triggered it to work.” - Mister Jeffa

“Do you mind me asking what system you were playing on, Xbox 360 or Xbox One? Thank you for your response” - Myself

“i was playing on a xbox 360” - Mister Jeffa

"Last question, did you take any additional steps other than load the game up and try uploading a file, and how many tries did it take roughly?
Thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback!" - Myself

“first i tried download a random screenshot of someones share and uploading it to my own, that didnt work. so i decided to do a firefight game and get a screenshot from there which at first also failed but after trying several times over it did pop the achievement. and I am not sure how many times I have tried this but it is quite a lot ( around 30 times at least spread out over a few months), I also tried it on my 2nd account just to test it and there it is still not working.” - Mister Jeffa

“Thank you, that’s brilliant! I really appreciate the replies. Have a good morning/afternoon/evening.” - Myself
End of Transcript.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mister Jeffa again for his time. With this information we can begin piecing together whether there is a solution or whether it is simply pure luck. I’m hoping to receive more feedback from other individuals soon, however as of right now it appears to be simply down to luck with the servers. Pin-pointing known times there are active might reveal a pattern but this is yet to be observed.

Further updates will be posted as I uncover more information.

I have made twenty attempts today using various methods. I will continue tomorrow, hopefully with some more insight from others I have contacted.

GrimBrother One, ske7ch, stckrboy is it possible to get a hot-fix for this achievement to make it unlock by simply clicking upload on a file - or other solution. Myself and others would really appreciate feedback on this issue. If this is not a possibility and will not be addressed in the future, it would be nice to have clarity regarding this situation. Thanks in advance if you manage to see this post. Keep up the tremendous work you do at 343i.

My solution to upload files to have a chance for unlock (as people are having a hard time uploading) was when the servers are being buggy and not allowing you to upload, basically on an Xbox 360 if you are failing to upload a file (Which should allow for the achievement to unlock if you do upload), Reset your console, clear your system cache, restart Reach, download the small update, and sometimes you will have a small window of opportunity to upload again, though the percentage rate of that working falls into the 10-30% range and doesn’t always work.

If you manage to upload a file this way when the servers are bugged out and the achievement still does not unlock, there is more coding broken than just the coding and/or connection to the file share system for uploading and tagging. I used the method I mentioned when I created screenshots last year to upload them with some determination when they would not upload. I have reason to believe that clearing the cache and redownloading the update did something that temporarily fixed the uploading issues for a very short duration during the small percentage when it worked. I say that as sitting there for hours hitting upload again and again did nothing, this had a result, though the result was rare.

Looking at Mister Jeffa’s success on an Xbox 360 leads me to believe that despite being severely broken, that on the 360 the encoding still has a chance to work with the achievement as well as uploading even though the percentage chance is small, and sometimes you have to take extra steps to even upload anything as I mentioned above.

stckrboy any ideas or input you can potentially offer on HCS Joker’s issue here?

I just want to start of by saying thank you for replying to this thread, especially in the detail that you have. If you don’t mind, can you just confirm my understanding of the proposed solution;

Xbox 360 Solution steps; - Reset Console (Start up the console). - Clear System Cache. - Launch Reach (Should the game be installed?). - Download Update. - Upload Screenshot from Local Storage (Is it preferable to upload one taken by the account as opposed to downloading a screenshot from the most downloaded section?).I assume if the upload fails, you revert back to step one. Is this correct?

The last thing I would like to clarify with you is, when an upload failed during your attempts. What was the error message? Ideally I would like to be 100% certain that the issues being experienced now and the issues you experienced last year are one and the same. As of right now I can’t make a connection to any event that has caused this problem other than unknown sever-side issues.

Thank you again for taking your time to reply to this thread. I hope with the information you have provided, a clear solution can be found and posted in detail. It’s unfortunate that there is some much ambiguity surrounding this issue. I will commence testing tonight and report my results tomorrow. Of course all credit will be given to you if this solution is successful as the original poster/founder.

I’m happy to help you out with this based upon what I know and have done previously. As you stated, yes, this was my method of attempting to upload when the File Share system was being buggy and would not upload:

  • Reset Console (Start up the console). - Clear System Cache. - Launch Reach - Download Update. - Upload Screenshot from Local StorageI have both disc and digital copies of Reach, but I was using a digital copy at the given time, as my physical copy seems to have an odd glitch where if you access the Armory before going into any game or forge, the Xbox locks up, but the digital copy does not have this issue. so it is a digital copy of Reach. And as for uploading,t hey were my own screenshots and files, not other peoples.

What happens if uploading fails is the game tries to upload the file, but the progress bar goes nowhere for about two minutes, stops uploading, and then II get the message “A file could not be transferred”. If after three tries if I don’t get it, I reverted back to step one. as I said, the chances of this working fell into the 10%-30% range. I wouldn’t call this a solution, but a workaround that worked for me. Question is will it work for others?

This is brilliant, thank you so much. I will report back my progress tomorrow.

Note: You are right, definitely a work around as opposed to a solution.

Just a heads up, you may be at this for hours like I was, so make sure you have some free time.

Update[3]: Following the steps provided within this thread, I was unable to obtain the achievement. I repeated the steps 67 times over the course of 3 hours, 20:00 - 23:00 (GMT) 22nd of April.

It remains unknown whether there is a working solution and no solid conclusion can be made. Without the input of 343, I believe this issue will continue in its mystery waiting within limbo between obtainable and discontinued. I want to thank everyone involved within my investigation for the inputs they provided, its unfortunate the ending isn’t as conclusive as many of us would of liked. I am retiring my efforts into the investigation of this achievement, I apologise to the people who wanted to see this issue resolved to some extent.

My decision to retire my efforts was due to the lack of engagement on 343i’s side of things, I understand however that Halo Reach is an aged game and thus means little in the grand scheme of Halo. Numerous tweets and direct messages were made. The being said, 343i does tremendous work for Halo as a franchise and for that I am grateful. Keep up the good work over at 343i.

Anyone is welcome to pick up where I left off, I shall leave the information here as an open source. Good luck to all the individuals who still seek an answer to this issue.

Question, did you even manage to upload anything with my method? The average time it took me to upload a file with it was 20 minutes to one hour. There was only one day when the method I mention simply did not work at all over a three hour period. If it did not work at all, then the servers are more broken than ever.

In answer to your question, yes. The problem lies in the error message, it claims the transfer failed despite the file actually appearing in your fileshare, I believe this is where the issue lies in regards to unlocking the achievement. I believe it’s as you say, a much deeper issue and I am doubtful it will be addressed. Thanks for all of your help though, it was much appreciated.

Sorry about the late reply, the week just gone was my exam week.

.

thank god already got this achievement in 2016

Yep, I’m having tough luck with this cheevo too. I am trying to get every Halo achievement too, I’ve already 100% Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo 4 and Halo 5. -Yoink- I think I’ll just stick around till’ 343i fixes this beacause I only need this one and 3 more for Reach, 343i hasn’t been letting these games die in a hole and with the backwards compatable other games and free DLC the light is bound for these little glitches. I doubt it will be very difficult to fix this as well I think it could just be a little quirk in the network but I’m not going to solve this until someone else does.

Recently going back and completing all of the Halo games one last time before the server shutdown. This of ALL of the achievements is the one that’s glitched? If anyone has any solutions that might be helpful I would greatly appreciate it. This achievement keeping me from a complete in Reach is a bummer.

We’ve still got time so lefts hope they fix it

This has been an issue since 2017?! I’m…confused. I just checked my achievements on here and it seems that the date at which I unlocked the A Storage Solution achievement is in 2020! I don’t recall doing anything special. I just decided to take one of my favourite screenshots and put it on my File Share. I can’t remember experiencing any problems, and it seems that it got me the achievement. Maybe I got lucky…
