Fighting Spartan-IVs in the Campaign

I’ve got another idea for you all to chew over regarding the Flood. Previously I surmised that the Flood, particularly the Gravemind, would make Chief believe Cortana had returned and trick him into accomplishing its ends. It does have the ability to create hallucinations that are very convincing. This time around, I believe the Flood may be able to turn the Spartan-IVs against the Chief without infecting them. Here is what I’ve got.

First, let’s get some insight on the Spartans themselves. Halo 4 showed us that the Librarian planted the seeds for the development of the Spartans, MJOLNIR and AIs like Cortana while Halsey was the human who brought these creations into existence. Near as I can tell, this was done in order to make humanity more like the Forerunners. Forerunners had advanced armor with AIs housed inside, the Spartans have advanced armor systems that later were given the ability to house an AI. The biggest difference is that the Forerunner AIs were more like servants as opposed to humanities AIs who seem to be given more free-reign and are treated with more respect and dignity.

At this point, you can probably guess I am working my way towards the AI angle. I have a feeling that at some point before Halo 5/XBO, perhaps in Halo: Escalation, or during the events of the game, the rest of the Spartan-IVs will begin to get outfitted with AIs of their own. Where will they come from? I don’t know, but Cortana’s comment about Chief maybe getting another “Cortana-model” AI has intrigued me for a while. At first, it was confusion due to the fact there was no such thing as a Cortana-model AI, after all Cortana was a unique AI made from Halsey’s living brain tissue, most AIs from the dead tissue from donated brains. So perhaps the UNSC has found a way to mass-produce AIs for the Fours to augment their abilities and Cortana serves as either the template or inspiration?

If so, I think these AIs are going to end up dooming the Fours. Here is where the Flood comes in. The Flood has this effect on AIs, as demonstrated by the betrayal of the AI known as Mendicant Bias towards the Forerunners after conversing with the Primordial for nearly 50 years, where it corrupts them and bends them to their will. This is called the Logic Plague. It is my belief that the Flood may be able to hack these new AIs with the Logic Plague and control the armor of the Spartans and force them to fight against their will.

Does it seem far-fetched? Well, like the hallucinations I proposed Chief could experience in my last thread, there is prescient here. In the novel Halo: Primordium, one of the human characters named Riser is in the company of three Forerunners. They had crashed on a rouge Halo ring under the control of the Primordial and the Flood and were on their own. One Forerunner was locked in his armor while the other two are still able to move. However, the armor of the locked up Forerunner actually begins to squeeze him and crushes him to death. The other two Forerunners shed their armor, but even shed off it tries to kill them. It is my belief that the Flood’s Logic Plague got to the Forerunner AIs in their armor and started to control it for their own ends.

So there you have it. Like the Cortana idea, I feel having to kill these Spartans now under the control of Logic Plague AIs may cause some discomfort in players and the Chief. After all, the Spartans themselves aren’t trying to kill you, they are acting against their will. Another factor to consider is that it will ultimately hurt the plans of the Librarian and Halsey, both of whom were trying to accelerate humanities evolution.

Perhaps this wasn’t as compelling as the last thread, but I hope it gives you something to think about.

Stands Up A Very Good Post As Always Cobra. Claps Slowly

Your insight into these theories is tremendous, another awe inspired theory for the future of Halo.

I believe this ‘Logic Plague’ needs a little more clarification. How exactly does the flood do this? Do they shout “Abra Kedabra!” and then it happens, or is there a technical process that they follow. What sort of technology do they possess that allows this.

Uhm…fighting Spartan IVs that are being hijacked by corrupted AIs sounds a lot like indoctrination /thorian from ME or chip override from Deus Ex and pretty much amounts to killing innocent comrades. I doubt that is a theme 343 will feature in their game. I am not against it per se especially if it is LIMITED in its usage and there is an achievement for simply knocking them out without casualties -like Mass Effect/deus ex- (plasma pistol charged bolt followed by melee)

Never heard of this ‘Logic Plague’, but it sounds pretty interesting and it seems to eradicate one of the few flaws the flood has. But I would also like to have more clarification on this. Why didn’t Cortana suffer from this fate when she was captured by the Gravemind?

Personally I think they will become enemies similar to why the Traitor Legions turned from the light, their own, hubris and their leader’s.

If anyone other than you Cobra had tried to suggest a feasible way of fighting the IVs I probably would have shot them down. You’ve actually found a decent way however.

We already know AIs can hijack Mjolnir - just look at Ebullient Prism hijacking Black 4’s HUD in Halo: Blood Lines. I imagine the Gravemind would be able to do an even better job.

I love reading your campaign possibility posts, always entertaining to read, keep up the good work

I suppose it’s possible, but I think making hundreds of Smart A.I’s seems a bit over budget.
I could maybe see it happening for say, Spartan IV commanders, like maybe an A.I for Palmer to help her manage her Spartan IV’s. But I can’t see every Spartan getting an A.I. Not yet anyway. A.I’s, smart and dumb ones, currently seem more fit to drive ships and manage entire cities than be partnered up with an individual for an extended period of time.
When we do encounter the Flood again, I could see the Gravemind using the logic plague on Roland somehow in order to destroy Infinity though.

That would be…really unfortunate, having to kill the innocent Spartan-IVs because their suits got hijacked by parasites.

I think this would be a better idea than fighting Innie S-IVs (though I wouldn’t mind this either), given the player’s connection with Spartans.

It would be a REAL shame if Blue Team were in the game and the same happened to them. I just hope there would be a non-lethal way to deal with these hijacked Spartans. Overloading them with a Plasma Pistol and doing an assassination maneuver on them to force the AI system out of their helmets, that sort of deal.

I like that idea.

If they do this, they need to really focus on the emotional toll this would take on the Chief.

I’m talking about the SIVs shouting for the Chief not to shoot them while they are forced to fire upon him. Screaming at their armor to stop.

And further more we need to see the Chief being mentally destroyed by having to kill the people he swore to protect.

This. ^^

But, like I said, I would also really like an option for a non-lethal takedown for these types of encounters. I think it would add something different, gameplay-wise, to the series.

I feel like John would find a way to make sure he didn’t have to kill his friends and fellow soldiers.

> I feel like John would find a way to make sure he didn’t have to kill his friends and fellow soldiers.

I’m certain he would try to make as many non-lethal takedowns as possible.

But we also need to see him pushed into a corner where the only option is to kill another human being; And not an Innie, an ally. Hell, maybe even see the Gravemind kill a subdued soldier just to twist the knife.

Finding a cure or a 100% effective non-lethal takedown is a cop out and ruins the story and underminds the whole effective of the Gravemind turning your brother against you.

True enough.

Maybe in a cutscene, have John non-lethally take them down, only to have the Gravemind either kill them anyway remotely, or worse yet, force John to kill them himself. I think it would be neat to at least falsely allude to a non-lethal way to save his comrades, only for the Gravemind to say “Yeah, no. Not happening.”

Awesome post Cobra. My only counter is would that many more AI’s be produced? Resources and funds allow it?

Just spent the last hour writing a response to Cobra’s idea… then there was a loading error… I could cry right now.

Well the short version is that using the cloning method is superior to the current system to the point where having every SIV using a smart A.I and those smart A.I having good personality matches is possible all the while it being so cheap we could mass produce them. The only draw back is bad karma for playing god. It makes sense trust me.

I also just want to quickly say that if our SIVs did get A.I I’d rather them be our friends over them turning us into zombies.

I went into so much bloody detail over those -Yoink!- cloned brains…

I might update this with the full story later but my soul is so crushed right now.

It is very plausible.

The Flood is known to be able to subvert the most advanced AI ever, the Contender class. Who is to say that they could not to the same thing again?

I think that the Assembly (That group of AI that looks out for humanity) may give the Chief a call.
