How does the ranking work? I’m ONYX, does this mean I need to place top 2 in order to progress? I’m unsure on what it takes and it’s scaring me away from playing more lol.
Pretty sure usually top two gain CSR if not top three… But it can also depend on who else is in the match. The ranking seems to be working a lot better with True Skill 2.

Yeah I’m not 100% on anything haha, I have seen conflicting answers to this question. Some say you can come fifth and gain CSR, others say as long as you place higher than someone who is higher than you, then you get CSR and vice versa. Then others say no you_must_place 1-2 or 1-3 etc

I have been playing a bit more FFA but honestly I don’t pay enough attention to when I have gained and lost CSR.
Disclaimer: Highest I’ve been in FFA is Diamond 2.
I’ve been as low as 4th or 5th and still had the green arrow next to my CSR in the post-carnage report. Now, that could mean that I just didn’t lost CSR, not that I gained CSR.
Edit: Here’s a game where I placed 5th but gained a sliver of CSR.

You basically need to finish higher than anyone in the lobby who is lower rank than you, in order to not lose CSR. To gain CSR, you need to at least tie with or finish higher than anyone else in the lobby who is roughly the same rank as you or has a higher rank than you.
Of course, you won’t know people’s ranks until after the match ends (unless you recognize some of the players), so just try your best and hope you gained CSR at the end of it all.
On a post from Joshua Menke’s twitter, he stated that on a “balanced match” the CSR distribution is as follows:

Again, this assumption is based on a balanced match! lets say everybody is between diamond 3 and 4.
You might be able not to lose CSR on 4th if you place higher than an opponent with better CSR than yours.
