Idk what the deal is but it’s TOTAL JOKE when you grind for 8 hours getting 1st and 2nr place finishes almost always (2 games I got less then 2nd place) and I go up a GRAND total of 30 CSR… I don’t know how many games but it was a solid 8 hours and I went up a MAX of 3 per win with almost all 2nd place finishes giving me Zero (twice I lost CSR for 2nd place) then today I get on and in THREE games of two 4th place finishes and One 3rd place finish I lose OVER 60 CSR which brings me lower then when I started. It’s a joke, and not grind friendly…nobody in their right mind is gonna grind FFA with that kinda dumb stuff, i know I myself will never play FFA again cause it’s a total waste of my hours of the day if literally 3 games (45 minutes) I can lose everything I worked for in over 8 hours of grinding the day before… Obviously your ranking system in general is boring and not satisfactory but its usable in team playlists… but FFA for Onyx/champ players it’s borderline unplayable… Needs to be more consistent, if I take 1st I go up x amount every time, if I take 2nd I go up X amount every time, if I take 4th I go down x amount every time… What rank your playing against should noy factor into the system… Going up 1 and 2 points for 1st place finishes and then dropping 20+ for 4th place finish is unacceptable and unplayable.
CSR is not a progression based ranking system. Provided your skill is not evolving constantly, your rank is not supposed to go up indefinitely, but is only supposed to show how skilled you are relative to the rest of the population. In that case, it’s completely appropriate that how much you lose or gain points depends on the skill level of your opponents. Whether completely skill based ranks are fun or not is of course a matter of opinion, but I personally think that introducing elements of progression would defeat the purpose of what is supposed to be a skill ranking system.
Then don’t waste my life matching me against people who are such a low rank… It’s rediculous to make me have to rank up so incredibly slowly that it literally takes 8 hours of grinding and almost exclusively taking 1st or 2nd place and only rank up a grand total of 30 To 40 CSR and then being able to turnaround and lose 60 CSR in 3 games of 3rd and 4th place finishes…

If you’re complaining about being matched with people who are “such a low rank” then why are you taking 3rd and 4th place finishes in games?
A tip: don’t take the game so seriously. You’ll find the game much more enjoyable if you play for fun and stop being cut throat about every single game
It’s FFA dude, it’s impossible to win every game facepalm
Out of general curiosity I couldn’t help but go and look at your game history - up until the last 3 games you have had a very strong run of wins and 2nd places. I’m a little bit lost as to how and why Onyx is a ‘bad’ ranking in FFA. The weightings and CSR were updated a couple of months ago as CSR was becoming artificially high among the player base. I used to hit Onyx 2000+ in a number of seasons and now struggle to get out of the Diamond bracket. Further my time has been spread across other games right now so I think I’m mid Diamond which is probably where my skill really is.
Onyx means something more than what it did a number of seasons ago.
If ranking and rating is all that you are after then good luck to you on maintaining a winning run - have a look on HaloTracker for the CSR required to hit Champ.

That too
I’m sitting at Diamond 5 and have been for a while because I almost never match against onyx players. I consistently am one of the two highest ranking players in a match. This means I can only increase rank by taking 1st and possibly get a miniscule increase taking 2nd or even a derank if a lower ranked player takes it. In FFA it’s much more luck based below diamond due to each players ability to survive. While I’m fully capable of that other players in the lobby are not. This leads to me winning nearly every 1 v 1 and being forced to stay in areas of maps with high frequency of players. Much lower ranked players will assume to lose the gunfight before it even begins and duck around corners into other players I was aware of but they were not. I’m now left either full shields or one shot down without a kill to show for it and anyone nearby knows my position without having a sight line. I’ve just become part of an easy double kill for another player. My only hope to win matches is by waiting near high traffic areas and cleaning up kills only to quickly switch positions to live and or hit anyone who sprints into the area to clean up a quick kill. These matches are not fun at all because I don’t feel like I’m competing against people because nobody will challenge me while at full shields. The frequency at which this happens is not nearly enough for me to take first over whoever gets the most lucky double kills or is implementing the same tactics I just described. Despite undoubtedly being able to outshoot anyone in the lobby I lose because I’m forced to play differently. Even when I win these I gain next to nothing in rank. The punishment for missing one shot cleanups or failing to time a kill steal one too many times can mean a loss. Then after winning or taking second multiple times I lose all or more than I’ve gained in previous matches. Please please I beg that you at least attempt to match me with people who I have to work to beat in gunfights (onyx players) and will consistently challenge. I can still win games by employing FFA tactics I spoke of but I’m aware everyone else may be attempting them as well and it’s no longer random but people are clearly better at it than others who toss out their lives on a whim.
Basically adjust FFA so even if search times are longer I will approximately be the highest ranked player in 1 out of 6 matches and the Lowest in 1/6th and mid ranked in 4/6 even if it requires an increase search time. It should decrease the search time for high end and champ players by allowing me to play against them and in turn they merely have to continue playing in that same play style. This would make the jump into onyx doable for players currently stuck in lower ranked matches that are capable of outperforming onyx players. In short the problems that exist in matches with mid plat to mid diamond players won’t be in high ranked matches and it’s okay to have champ players as the highest in matches provided there are few other champs to match against. Those mid plat players are only just learning the meta that goes into FFA and having a mix of people running searching for kills is a pain to break through due to match inconsistency.
So yeah loosen matchmaking for higher tiers to allow even diamond 4 to match people with 1600+ csr. Even the matches I play against onyx players rarely include players above that rank.
I said a lot here but any response could be helpful. If I’m just not playing the game right be sure to let me know because God forbid the ranking system be at fault when I’m stuck against players I literally cannot gain csr from beating.

I’m not the biggest fan of Halo 5 but from my experience playing, I’ve never had issues with the matchmaking system. It’s a solid system and accurate at that. Games can be easy and games can be hard so take the wins when you can get em, regardless of what the skill level of other players are. Things are going to be mixed up to keep players on their toes so the truly great, consistent players will rise to the top and stay there. If matchmaking was restricted, it would almost be an “invite only” club pitching like leveled players against each other leaving no room for players to progress. That’s why the best of the best don’t get matched against each other every time. They’re thrown into games so they can continue to play and so lower leveled players have a chance to try and prove themselves.
As for your tactics, you’re fine. Be a clean up pro and use ANYTHING you can get your hands on. If you refuse to use a rocket launcher simply because it’s a “noob” weapon, your opponent will use it against you and win. The only respect in FFA is the respect from winning by any means necessary. If you’re truly a great player, it’ll show
I definitely agree that it’s way too hard to progress past onyx. Just look at the leader boards. Only 19 people have surpassed 1800 and the season has been going for over a month. I love FFA, but don’t even bother to play it anymore because all it does is frustrate me.
FFA has had ranking issues since it came out. TBH, I would actually play it if it was social instead.
I was Diamond 3 when I started today. halfway to D4. won some games, barely moved. didnt do so well in some, moved a million points backward. like, come on man. Now I’m diamond 2.
OP has a point. He has an insane 46% winning percentage in FFA. I think the main issue is there might be much less Onyx players in general this season. So he is getting some Diamonds and Platinums. A lot of those Diamonds have finished previous seasons as Onyx. I did read an update where they stated Onyx will be tougher across the board compared to previous seasons.
