I have loved a lot of the gameplay so far of Halo Infinite so far with the bot matches.
I think so far my biggest issue is how points are distributed for the battle pass. ESPECIALLY when the points didn’t scale with the tasks. like 100 points for 1 match to 100 points for 2 matches to 100 points for 3 matches to how many points for 4 matches? 100 points. Please at least at some more points for more work. It really frustrated me that there was nothing gained for having more points at the end of the game. No XP, or battle points, or challenges to go for once I finished my challenges in a few games. I’m sure we’ll see more in the finished game but this current system made me very cautious of the philosophy of how much I’m expect to play if I don’t want to spend a lot of money or worse, what I won’t have access to at all if I choose not to spend a lot of money.
Starting with the more technical side, I really appreciate all the work to make the game more inclusive with controller possibilities and UI changes have been a welcome change to my friend who is color blind. allowing fireteam/lobby disabling helps with unnecessary muting from some past games. The only addition I would love to see added would be more options for HUD visibility as currently, it takes away everything where I would either an itemized list to turn on/off as needed or with hud elements appearing as used (ammo count when shooting, heath when damaged, or aim reticle when shooting).
Also starting the match with 4 Spartans doing a pose is a bold move with how much the community hated the similar aesthetic of Halo 5’s mode that did that. But whatever you do, don’t fix (the glitch?) the Spartan being dead in that opening shot if the left before the game started. It’s the funniest thing every time and does not require fixing. The end of a lot of games stated I was disconnected from the game, but I received my points so I’m not sure why that happened. Also, most of the bots go the exact same way every time which makes the beginning of bot matches pretty same-y, I’d recommend adjusting AI to have more variety in starting paths so they wouldn’t get hit by a couple of easy grenades at the beginning of every match. Otherwise, I felt they were fairly balanced. A fair challenge but doesn’t feel like fighting aimbots.
I wish there was more emphasis on futurology, alien planets/cultures, and Halo iconography in the map design. So far the 3 main maps shown off have felt more like modern FPS’ than the world of Halo, and for a franchise that has so many interesting worlds and locations to explore. I am hoping for more unique locations in the base game, because most of the maps could have been levels for any other game and if I didn’t see the Spartans or weapons that still shouldn’t be the case.
Most of the weapons feel great. Love the changes to grenade throwing/Rocket Launcher/Shotgun, the Battle Rifle is just pure Halo 2 fun, the AR/Pistol both feel perfect for their roles as starting guns. Needlers is fun, Gravity Hammer feels slower but more powerful, and the new guns feel like they’ll take some time to perfect and add a lot to the sandbox. Movement is fun, and the map layout feels built for the mechanics of clambering and grappling hooks, which are also a lot of fun. Please please please if grappling hooks have a limit in multiplayer matches, that’s fine, but let us turn that off for custom games because I just want to add them to every custom game. I think since Halo 3 the franchise has been trying to perfect that item slot and this game does it well, just add a jetpack and I think this would beat out every other Halo in that department.
