Feedback, Criticisms, Praises, Oh My!

Hello and welcome!

With the Infinite flight closed and me basically longing to play it, I figured it was best to write down my feedback for 343i. I also never got that email 343i said they would send out to some people. I’m guessing I wasn’t on the list. So, I will relay my official feedback of the recent Technical Preview here on Waypoint.

To start, this game is not perfect. Nor is it the worst Halo game in existence. Not sure where this divide came from. However, I do find Halo Infinite to be a very good Halo game. The movement, gunplay, and feel of the game is absolutely fantastic. However, I do have some issues along with some notable praises. So we’ll start with my criticisms and move on to my praises.

Note; there will be multiple posts from me since I have a lot of feedback and not enough room. Don’t worry, I will state when the topic is finished. There’s a TL;DR.

Criticisms**:**

  • Motion TrackerThis became a lot more prevalent when PvP was unlocked on Sunday. For context; in every single Halo game, the motion tracker would track the movement of Spartans depending on their speed and if they were shooting. From Halo CE all the way to Halo 5. In Halo Infinite, you are only tracked on the motion tracker when you are sprinting and firing.

What is the point of crouching then? Sprinting barely goes faster than your base movement speed, and it unlocks several momentum options for you via sliding. What crouching used to do was make you slower and quieter while preventing you from appearing on enemy motion trackers. This would allow you to sneak up on an unsuspecting enemy and get the jump on them.

However, in Halo Infinite, you can move without crouching and not appear on enemy motion trackers. You cannot hear enemy Spartans moving about. What is the actual point of crouching then? There are only cons; you move slower, you can be taken out of position, and you will lose the gunfight if you are surprised. You can walk normally and receive the old pros of crouching like not appearing on radar, while still being able to fight back should you be surprised.

The new strategy can simply become everyone running together in a giant blob and staying completely invisible to radar and human ears. You stumble upon an enemy, eliminate him quickly, then quietly move along at a near same pace as the enemy sprinting. The only way to properly resolve this is to bring back the old motion tracker. Raising sprint speed would ruin the maps, and reducing radar size would give the same problems Halo 5 currently experiences with its radar.

All of the movement abilities must compliment and hamper the motion tracker since this Halo is definitely a slower-paced game similar to Halo 3. Skill comes from your aim and not your twitch reactions, which this radar will inevitably do as people need to constantly use their own eyes instead of the eyes in the back of our heads. Crouching should hide you from the motion tracker but reduce your speed. The base movement speed should keep your gun up and allow you to fight back. Sprinting should unlock the increased momentum options. This also nets the problem of wondering whether the radar size is too small (I do not understand why we are dropping radar size from 25m to 18m or 20m) or just right. Allow us to test the radar as it’s supposed to be so we can see whether the reduced range works or not.

  • Reloading Sound DesignThe reloading for the guns feels incredibly off. Reloading the sidekick, after hearing a hail of beautiful sounding gunfire, sounds like the ding of an opened cash register. Or a glass bottle being tapped by a fingernail. There is almost zero weight to the reloading of the guns.

  • The Battle PassMy biggest issue with regards to the Battle Pass was that I could not unlock everything through normal gameplay. I had to complete daily/weekly challenges to gain EXP without paying for tier boosting. Not being able to properly level up the Battle Pass with normal gameplay was a heavy turn-off from playing Infinite at one point early in the Flight. Since there was only one map, I was wanting to try and level up to get the Ghost Grey coating. I am sad to say I never achieved that coating. I could never reach it despite my boosting, doing all the challenges, and playing near religiously.

If this type of BP system makes its way into the final launch, I can bet people will fall off because they cannot see progress being made on their Battle Pass when they do a single slayer match.

  • Armour CoatingsI’m conflicted with armour coatings. On one hand, yes! Yes! completely to the different textures that the armours can achieve. That is an amazing idea. Keep going down that path. In fact, I would encourage that along with providing the option to give players custom colours that they can choose. 343i’s statement, “We want the Spartan to represent the player as much as possible.” - Christopher Blohm, is not represented by the removal of colours. Colours have been an integral part of Halo’s player expression for literally every single Halo until this one. Colours should not be forced upon an armour coating.

Now, I understand some promotional pieces have these coatings. I say keep them 100%. In fact, add colours to coatings that are not promotional in nature. Cadet Orange, Gray, Red, Green, Blue. You can easily combine all of these down into a single armour coating; Cadet. Then you can have further options to choose which colour. This brings back the old player expression. You can also do this with other armour coatings, having different types of colours that would change the look of the coating. That’s a potential middle point to bring back player expression while also keeping promotional coatings.

  • Red vs BlueI had some pretty big difficulties with regards to distinguishing my teammates and even the enemy team. First off, I could not see service tags or Gamertags on players. I could not. I could not figure out who was who. And for some strange reason, the fireteam colour was broken as well? So I could not for the life of me figure out which blue guy was on my team. So I’d sometimes steal something, or walk in front of someone and get stuck, and not realize I might’ve screwed my fireteam over. Please push service tags/gamertags on the top of player’s heads on your team. I want to actually know who’s who. These outlines also make it very difficult to understand when an opponent is cracked or not. I had a tough time understanding that.

Praises**:**

  • Sound DesignThe guns sound amazing. Spectacular. Hearing the AR, BR, Sidekick, etc. is the best. The guns have proper weight and feel to them and make the entire experience wrapped up nicely. The sound of the grenades, the weapons, the AI, the music. It encapsulates everything perfectly. I one time had the main menu running while I was working just to listen to the music.

Some stuff like Spartan chatter and footfalls needs improvement (Yes, I get it. There’s a Spartan “Over Yonder”). However, ultimately, the game sounds great. 4 and 5 had some strange sound choices. This one has a sound design that makes sense. Flippin’ amazing.

  • MovementThe movement of this game feels really really good. I attempted to play some other FPS games during the Halo Infinite Flight and they felt just horrible. I usually play a ton of Warzone with my brother and I was struggling to play. Other FPS games just don’t feel as good as Halo Infinite. The choice to reduce sprint speed but use it as a way to unlock more advanced mechanics? Actually genius. You keep the heart of Halo while providing players with the potential to improve. Again, a smart decision. Kudos!

  • GunplayThe gunplay is pretty similar to my above point. I’d even say they overlap. The gunplay feels incredibly good and really satisfying. Some weapons like the Sniper and the Skewer… I don’t know, something feels wrong with them. The other Halo’s make them feel really good. But the Plasma Pistol, Needler, BR, AR, Sidekick, Ravager, Gravity Hammer (Oh I love this thing), Commando, Pulse Carbine, Bulldog. Each weapon feels like a single person just put their heart into the thing. The Heatwave I would say even has a skill gap. It took me a couple of days to fully realize how to make it work and make it work well. I soon just would run straight for it. It could use a buff, but it feels awesome.

  • BotsThe bots can be terrifying… and also a bit weak. I was admittedly expecting to be slapped by Spartan bots. But they felt no more difficult than ODST bots, except they jumped more. I would request that the Spartan bots be more of a challenge. I’d like a challenge when I’m warming up. Make me wish I would drop the level so that when I prevail, it’s even more satisfying. Though their grenades are absolutely wicked, it taught me how to make the grenades really work. I even started using some of their tricks.

  • CustomizationNow, the coatings topic might make me seem like I don’t really appreciate the armour customization. That would be false. I love this armour customization. I adore it entirely. It is the evolved version of Reach and 4 and I am all for it. It was like a strange love child that became more attractive than both of its parents. Each helmet gets attachments, shoulders, gloves, bucklers, kneepads, thighs, torso, etc. This armour customization is literally the best customization I have ever seen in a Halo game. Despite the limited option I could easily change up and get various combos and looks. It was pretty awesome.

I love the idea of the prosthetics, the body type slider is actually pretty interesting, I just wish I could customize the voice, I was trying on the Mobile App and was getting Southern Spartan. Hilarious, I love it. Buuut I’d like to change it, thank you.

  • The SpartanThe Spartan has some weight to them. When you die and ragdoll, or when you see the other Spartans ragdoll, they have the weight I would expect in a man clad in metal. This is a small point but still very important.

Feedback:

Ultimately, this has been a very good preview into Infinite, and I am all for it. Below is a quick summary of my talking points for people to browse if they got too lazy to read and for 343i to quickly overlook should they implement some of my feedback. Otherwise, well done on a successful flight. I’m excited for Flight #2. I wanna see more. I can firmly believe this game will take up hours of my time and I am all for it.

TL;DR

Criticisms

  • Motion Tracker should register base movement speed, not just sprinting. - Motion tracker size will need to be evaluated. I believe 25m should be the norm, no 20m or 18m. - The reloads on the guns for the UNSC feel weak and floaty. They need some weight. Also provides an issue as to whether I’ve reloaded or not cause they don’t sound full. - You should be able to earn EXP from playing the game, not just challenges. Makes levelling up the Battle Pass frustrating and may turn off players from the game (since there would be no goal to achieve). - Armour coatings should allow players to change their colours. Player Expression is key and should remain key. Promotional coatings should remain the same, and other coatings should have an option to change their colours. - Fireteam colours did not work, I was unable to tell who my teammate was. The outlines are difficult to register and understanding when shields have broken is overly difficult. Service Tags/Gamertags should appear over player heads. - Spartan Chatter is a bit bland and boring. I would like proper callouts to occur besides “Over Yonder.” - Footfalls are too quiet. - Sniper and Skewer feel off.Praises**:**

  • The sound design is very well done. The guns feel good and have weight to them. - The music sounds awesome and is amazing. - The movement feels amazing and great. - The gunplay feels awesome. It rivals other FPS’s. Makes the Skewer and Sniper’s issues more at the forefront. - The bots are a welcome edition. Spartan bots should be stronger, let’s get some difficulty! - The customization is the best it’s ever been. Changing the coatings to allow players to choose their colours would make this Halo’s customization the best. As soon as that happens, never touch it again. - The Spartans have weight. - Everything feels grounded. That makes the game feel infinitely better.Have a wonderful rest of your day everyone!

P.S. Because I forgot to mention it.

Can we please have the option to change the crosshair position to be in the classic position versus the center of the screen? Similar to what we have in the MCC. It’s a great idea that should be included in Infinite.

Feedback:
Didnt play the first flight but i watched and studied closely, also i am veteran halo franchise player since halo 1.

Pros:
.Nice adittion with the sprint and slide although they need some tweaking to find the sweet spot
.Addressed the issue of the sniping meta slightly but addressed.
.Well done weapon balancing gunplay now feels smoother, nicer??
.Of course the ambiance is praisable
.I personaly dont favor bots in any game but i have to say they did a pretty good job with the AI
.Also needs a little expansion but customization so far is very good

Cons:
.Motion tracker just stay as it has been and register movement unless you’re crouched, range reduction, maybe, alternating how visible you are on radar based on movement speed, definitively yes. but further changes would affect game play drastically and drift away from the core halo essence.
.Battlepass progression needs improvement
.Lack of execution animations this would make a nice addition and it would prove to be a nice monetization avenue and nice addition to battlepasses.
.Sound of footsteps also needs improvement it should feel like the actual weight of a heavyweight muscular soldier clad in armor and you should be able to hear it and distinguish it based on the kind of movement being executed.
.A little more weapon variety would be nice
.Base armor abilities that you can choose for your starting loadout should be a thing with other more powerful or unique abilities being the pickup ones on map this would offer more depth in gameplay.

A large number of people would disagree with this one, after Reach/4 got so much flak for having stuff like this. Personally, I’d not mind Loadout options back but only for Customs, “Fun Social” modes like Action Sack, and PvE modes like Firefight. In fact, features like this would work best in PvE modes - but not many people really give Customs/PvE much thought when features are brought up it seems, usually shooting things down because it might hurt Competitive somehow, as if every feature implemented will be in every mode at all times.

This is a very valid point. If they implement Firefight again, it should allow for the ability to select loadouts and equipment. I can get behind something like this.

I apologize, but this is very difficult to read. I do not know what you are saying, whether you’re directly replying to my points, or stating your own opinions. I have also been playing Halo since CE, but I’m not sure how that relates to the here and now.

Not replying to anyone in specific just stating what i observed and i said the halo veteran stuff as an addup because i didn’t play the flight as a way of saying that my opinions would come not from the experience of the actual halo infinite gameplay itself but from what i observed in the technical preview video and others you can find on the web, luckily a cousin of mine did play the first flight and he es also a halo strong fan since CE so we have been sharing opinions and standpoints about the current state of the game.
