I like this suggestion. Raise the skill gap a bit without really impacting the performance of the weapon itself.
Finally the “main gun” is something more than just a placeholder to throw away as soon as possible. It’s great to see other guns useful too. Remember you can always go enjoy headshot sweatfest in the competitive mode if that’s all that requires skill in your opinion. Every match doesn’t need to be about who gets and handles the BR/sniper best, they’re catering (likely) for million players. Competitive will have BR starts for you.

Actually useful and categorically easier and better than precision weapons are different things. The AR doesn’t need to be weaker, it just needs to be less useful beyond short to half medium range.
No. I want to play Social & BTB as well and enjoy them. All this ‘keep the AR as is!’ seems to be coming from a bitter and emotional place rather than logical.
The AR should definitely be a viable match for precision weapons within in its intended range. It shouldn’t be killing me at the upper end of medium range distances - ever really.
AR just needs its range cut down by 1/3.
Yeah sure it should be good at close range but the problem is that due to its tight cone of fire, high RoF and ability to do headshot damage, it’s basically the best suppression too in the game bar none. Now if you get several on you at once you’re probably a dead mf. But here’s the thing right?
The BR is a better starter for BTB and comp because it allows you to defend yourself at any range. It comes down to skill in that case. But the issue with the AR having a headshot multiplier is randomness/RNG. With its spread its TTK is inconsistent. Up the damage, short the mag, lower the RoF, take off the headshot multiplier, suddenly it’s able to be a lot more consistent in TTK at it’s intended range of use and outkill precision weapons.
Of course it should be noted that the BR does demand a time-on-target level of precision, especially with the difference between 6, 5 and 4 shot players, that does mean it still needs to be able to win. Its comparative difficulty of use needs rewarding.
and right now, the AR is able to suppress, descope and operate to kill at such an incredible range, that it strongly overshadows the rest of the UNSC’s sandbox. I probably don’t need to tell you that for The Commando, this is especially horrible, because it’s just straight up a trash weapon in its current state and you shouldn’t pick it over the AR.
Honestly I think within a month of launch the AR won’t be mentioned any more. For every role you might use it in, there’s a more effective weapon available. Its greatest strength is its versatility (why do you think canonically it’s Chief’s main weapon?)
People will learn, however, how to dodge that and aet up advantageous uses

Yeah, I don’t think the AR is being changed because a lot of people appreciate that the weapon is actually viable against precision weapons. Also, for everybody who’s going to be picking Halo up for the first time and likely not being represented on these forums, having an easily accessible starting weapon is a very, very good thing.
The main issue with the gun right now is its range. Maybe it could see a slightly more significant damage dropoff, but we’re talking about a micro-adjustment here.

I agree OP. Unfortunately I think it’s going to be awhile to see any small tweaks if anything. I prefer social playlists more now days, but I may get pushed into comp playlists just to get away from AR starts. I too think they have just a little too much reach. I hope they either drop the headshot multiplier or lower the damage distance just a touch. I certainly am not advocating for a big change at all. I’m okay with it as is at very close range.
I agree. 100% OP. Needs a range and damage nerf along with increased recoil. You shouldn’t be able to zoom on the AR at all and if you can zoom, you should be scoped out when being fired upon.

This is the most reasonable change that could be made, and would be preferable over reducing its TTK. I haven’t played the flights, but I personally would like the AR to be buffed compared to previous games, where it’s basically guaranteed to get you killed if you try to use it.
