You can jump off the top of the Spire and not die with Jetpack. You thrust before you hit the ground and offset your downward speed. This is what I mean by “feathering a fall with Jetpack”.
Should Halo 4 have some way of feathering a fall that does not require Jetpack and can be done by every player? There would still be fall damage but a player could negate that damage by performing an action. Thoughts?
I would like no fall damage but as a punishment if you like, you have to wait for an animation to complete making you vulnerable for a second or 2 after your fall.
Similar to the animation at the start of Exodus when Noble 6 jumps off the platform.

True but that is only a punishment if someone saw you fall and deals damage to you while you are in “high fall cooldown”. Taking fall damage is a punishment you receive even if no one sees you fall.

Yeah, this might be alright… but only if you were really quite high.

So? I don’t think you get it: people don’t want to be punished, we want to be able to move around maps however we wish without having to worry about dying. Reach’s fall damage took away a lot of possibilities that existed in previous titles.

No one wants to be punished, that’s the point. That’s why they learn to not do what got them punished. If there was a simple way to avoid the punishment of fall damage don’t you think people would learn to use it?
> Make it like Halo 2 and Halo 3, way funner than Reach.
No, people should have to think twice before taking a leap of faith. That makes it more realistic. Plus one big reason it was put in is to make JP more balanced for players that do nothing but fly up high to rain down grenades and so that people don’t just jump out of flying vehicles willy nilly.

lol i love it when people talk about realism and halo
OT: fall damage should be taken out again it was more fun

So just because it’s a sci-fi game that means it can’t be even remotely realistic. Fall damage is perfectly fine, it only gets you killed if your a complete moron.

Thats still in Reach. I do it all the time in vertical maps.

Really?! I thought it was removed once the game had launched. I’m gonna have to try it out.

Gameplay > Realism
Fall damage highly limits the flow of maps, how they can be forged (both competitive and custom mess-around types) and the overall “fun” aspect. Only casuals are willing to sacrifice these elements.
Does no one remember how vertically-inclined H3 maps were?
There’s more than just the laziness aspect that made H3 maps so much better: they could do crazy things like Construct. That’s just not possible in Reach.
Reach makes maps flat and linear with no variety.
