Favorite Version of the Sangheili?

Over the years, the Sangheili have seen many design changes (some more drastic than others) in the Halo franchise. I did this with Cortana so I figured I’d do it again; In no particular order, my opinions are:

1) Halo: CE - There’s not much to be said about the good ol’ Combat Evolved Elite. He’s the one that started it all; this design laid the foundation for Halo’s most recognizable foe and cemented its look into gaming history. Tall, fearsome, agile, simply-shaped full-body armor design. Tech limitations of the age make it difficult to make out much detail aside from that.

2) Halo 2/H2:A - One of my two favorite designs, the Halo 2 Elite was basically the same guy as his predecessor with a facelift. With more polygons to work with, Bungie went all-out with detail, adding a more distinct facial structure, toned muscles, and more armor detail. The general physiology remained unchanged, but the concept of rank-based armor variations first came into play with the Honor Guards, Rangers, Ultras (I think? The white ones that look like Xenomorphs…) and the Heretics. All of the above is doubly true in the beautifully remastered Halo 2: Anniversary that came ten years later (although if I were to gripe about one thing it’s how fat, overly-numerous and weird-looking their teeth are up-close).

3) Halo 3 - I gotta say, not much of a fan of this one in general. They got kinda…chubby and stumpy-looking, its almost a bit comical looking back on it. I understand this was for multiplayer balancing and their overall design got the job done, but they looked far less like the proud, threatening warriors of before. Even something about the sizing of their armor just doesn’t look as cool as Halo 2’s Elites IMO, I dunno what it is. But Bungie did up the detail once more, adding more realistic skin and facial features, as well as more intricate armor patterns. There were also many cool new variations to wear in Multiplayer as well.

4) Halo: Reach - Tied with Halo 2 in my opinion, Reach returned the Elites to their scary, badass stature and design. They stood a fair bit taller than even the Spartan-IIIs, and simply towered over the average Human. They were again lean and ultra-muscular, with a slightly-altered foot shape and size that I personally preferred to the massive, chunky hooves of the past, adding to their sense of agility. The concept of armor variations was taken to new heights, making it easier to distinguish when you’re going up against a scrub or a Big Wig; and there are some HELLA intimidating designs. Where Reach falters is it’s general facial features; Smaller, beadier eyes, a rounder head and chubby cheeks mar an otherwise awesome physiology IMO.

5) Halo 4 (to present) - Very hit-and-miss for me. They kept the fearsome stature, but changed pretty much everything else. Their skin was made pale and scaley rather than dark and leathery, their mandibles became thin and finger-like extending up BEHIND their eyes, there’s a bunch of disgusting fleshy growths (?) on characters like Gek, and they doubled down on the huge hooves I never liked and made them absolutely massive. Also, the elegance of their armor was reduced to a sleeveless tank top armor…thingy with no undersuit on the upper body. They are definitely very well-detailed in Halo 5, and some armor variations (such as Jul M’dama’s) look incredibly cool. But the Elites underneath are simply too hideous and different to like for me.

6) Other (Halo: Legends) - As more of an aside, although I didn’t like how human the Elites looked in the animated short The Duel, I did kinda dig the tendril-like growths on the back of the Arbiter’s wife’s head. I know females are supposed to be nearly identical to males, but eh, what can I say?

You forgot to add Halo Wars! :open_mouth:

I find the Halo 4-present Sangheili to be the most appealing when it comes to looks. However that is my opinion and incredibly subjective, but I do see good within every rendition of the Sangheili. I don’t mind which ends up being used within the Halo Universe, as long as we can stay consistent. Which is something we have seen with Halo 4-Present. Bungie had a knack for changing the various species of the covenant every game, and they had no similarities to the ones prior. Which 343i does a good job of staying with one version, except for the Unggoy of course. They changed heavily from Halo 4 to Halo 5.

Overall whatever Sangheili end up being used I wouldn’t mind, as I enjoyed all of them. I just want a specific version to be used and that alone, don’t go changing every game!

I liked Halo 3 & Halo Reach elites, mainly Reach tho

Halo 2: Anniversary, with Halo: Reach in close second. I love the more civilized, honorable warrior look over 343’s more brutish, monster look.

I’m still a fan of the Pre-Xbox Halo Elite.

Ah the good ole days.

Halo Reach had the best art direction for both the Covenant and the UNSC.

343i’s Elites look like -Yoink!- head aliens. All of the Covenant just look terrible under their ‘vision’.

I enjoyed how Elites in Reach were given rank-specific armor. Was a welcome change in variety from mere color pallet swaps.

I voted for original Halo 2 because I love that they still have the sleek design as Combat Evolved, and it is also when we were introduced to the Councilors and Honor Guard, probably the coolest Sangheili armor I’ve ever seen (regardless of how practical those helmets really are!). Halo 3 was also good, as they were given more detail in their armor. But everything after that, including the anniversary versions, just got clunky looking. Sure, the H2A Elites look great, but I can’t get over how bulbous they made their foreheads look, especially in the Blur-rendered cut-scenes. I can’t un-see it! :frowning: I also like Halo 2 best because that was before lots of ugly, chunky, bulbous armor for multiplayer was introduced in force. I love their sleek appearance the most.

I love the Reach armor’s but prefer the halo 1-3 look for their physiology. That said, i don’t find the 343 look for their heads that different, at least in terms of mouth structure.

I’m not a fan of their h2A look for the same reasons BlitzGirl isn’t. They also completely changed how their mouths work.

I dunno about that dude, the biggest change was from 3-Reach and they still looked generally the same. And while 343 can consistently use their own designs, they disregarded certain consistencies from throughout the franchise in the first place in order to do so.

But seeing as to how it seems we’re stuck with the new Elites, I’d like for 343 to uphold the idea that they are different and stop using them for placeholders in everything (like Fall of Reach Animated and Arbiter’s model in H5).

That actually did look kind of sick, minus the head shape IMO.

I liked Halo 3 and Reach armor designs but love the Halo 2 Anniversary Campaign Elite’s.

I kinda feel you. I don’t mind the Reach armors, but I did at times find myself missing the classic design.

By the way, Councilors = Badass Red/Gold Samurai dudes and Honor Guards = White Elites with the giant headdress, right?

I have no idea, I honestly thought the red guys were Honor Guards.

Hmmm, I think I will say H2 anniversary, but I think the ideal would be a mix of H2A with the height of a Reach elite (main thing I didn’t like about Reach elites was the floppy feet, but loved their height and agility); and I love my Elites black. I have no issue with other hues in addition to; but the ‘white washing’ of the Elites pisses me off.

Actually, other way around. Honor Guards are the red and gold, Councilors are the silver.

H2a and reach

Ok, so Honor Guards ARE the red guys. Just making sure. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the name of the Councilors until now, so I’d often mix them up.

Are we all in agreement the Halo Wars sangheili were the worse design ever seen in game?

I particularly loved the Halo 2: Anniversary edition of the Elites. They had this beautiful coloring, amazing looking physic, and looked like the proud warriors that franchise points them out to be. Best version of them yet, I would say.
