Halo 4 has to be my favourite of the series.
Halo 3, I wish it didn’t feel so weird on MCC, but hey.

Halo Reach, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary are my favorite in the Halo Franchise. I also love reading two Halo novel books Halo: New Blood and Halo: Bad Blood.
H3 fan boi here.
The music, the atmosphere, the equipment, the dual wielding, the multiplayer, the story, the characters, all felt like peak Halo. It felt like Halo hit a crescendo. CE laid the foundation, H2 built the structure, and H3 provided the capstone. I get a little gushy when I talk about H3, so I’ll leave it at that. I just genuinely enjoy that game so much.
I will go for Halo 3 as has a relatively well balanced campaign with a lot of variation throughout the game. The only true disappointment that invisible barriers has been overused which in turn limits exploration.

I’ll take invisible barriers over the use of soft-kill boundaries everywhere. You can’t even stand in the water on the Zanzibar remake on Halo 2 Anniversary without getting a death timer.

I would prefer if both of these exists but I would consider soft kill barriers to be the lesser of both of these evils as invisible barriers hides the map geometry. In general, I prefer that the maps should be designed in a such a way that none of these barriers should be needed.

I think it depends on the map for me. In most cases, soft-kills prevent people from exploiting the map, but then some of them are placed in sort of obscure places. For example, on the Zanzibar remake, they placed a soft-kill behind a pile of rocks at the end of the beach that you were able to walk behind on the original, but it isn’t like they served any advantage to go behind them in the first place, so why bother with the soft-kill in that scenario?
Love 'em all but if I had to pick one - I guess Halo 3. It finds the perfect balance for everything and I don’t remember a single part of it lacking.
Halo 3 for the Matchmaking.
Halo Reach for the Community and Custom Games

Halo 3 for me is the best
Halo 3.
I’ll throw in Halo 3: ODST as the expansion pack it was intended to be.
Well my top 3 favorite Halo games are
- Halo 2
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo Reach

100% agree with your number 1 slot. Halo 2 is by far the best and H2A is just the icing. It makes you wonder what it would’ve looked like had Bungie delayed its release and incorporated everything they wanted to instead of scrapping half of their ideas.
Unpopular opinion: I didn’t like ODST that much. I think the only reason why I dislike it so are because of those retarded “Mombasa Streets” where you roam aimlessly in the dark attempting to find the objective. I love the premise of the game dont get me wrong, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The “Mombasa Street” level where you have to walk around looking for the sniper rifle hanging on the wires? No joke, I couldn’t find it. It took me weeks. Then I got the bright idea to simply look it up on the OG internet and I was so pissed. lol. Many of the missions I had a good time with… but Mombasa streets man… they kinda ruined the game for me with some major PTSD.
And obviously Reach is amazing. I’d bump that up to my number 2 slot with Halo Wars 2 in 3rd.
Also the HALO CE vehicle graphics alone will be wedged between H2 and Halo Reach, because I had way to much fun with those.
So in conclusion:
- Halo 2/H2A
1 & 1/2: Halo CE Multiplayer Vehicle Physics
2: Reach - Halo Wars 2
