Just wanted to get a discussion going about some of the books of the Halo series. Some people will strictly read Nylund’s work, some people prefer the Forerunner books, and so on. I’ve enjoyed a lot of the books but there are some that were a pretty disappointing read or just didn’t tell the story well.
My personal favorite is The Fall of Reach. First novel, first backstory, first epic Halo book. Great stuff. Highly recommended.
My favorite novel is Mortal Dictata. The Fall of Reach was amazing, but Mortal Dictata I fell in love with. Absolutely spectacular. Mal is a crazy -Yoink-

The entire Kilo-5 trilogy was amazing and Fall of Reach was the original…
But Broken circle is probably my favorite that I’ve read.
Man… I really like Broken Circle. Ive listened to all the books that have turned into audio books including hunt the truth. The only book that stands out to me the most is Broken Circle. Its absolutely alien and human at the same time. I almost ranted and spoiled a bunch of stuff about it. I like the other books, really do. But for storys and character, I gotta give it to broken circle. Its well thought out and stands out.
I do not like Saints Testimony. Its just too far fetched and alien to me. Also very political.
Probably Fall of Reach, first Halo novel I read so I have a lot of fond memories for it… I should probably pick up the revised edition of it and First Strike some day.
Tough , tough choice. Gotta go with , The Cole Protocol. A masterpiece of a book. And a team of 3 SIIs instructed to do nothing else , but create mayhem behind enemy lines on their terms. If that don’t tickle your fancy…
Ghosts of Onyx. I’ve always liked and been fascinated with the Spartan-IIIs so learning about their origins and some of the members was really cool for me. I also liked that a decent portion of the book was from the perspective of a Covenant footsoldier turned fleetmaster. And between 'Mantakree, Ash, Kurt, and more, it’s packed with great characters.

Ghosts of Onyx and Sillentium were good.
The Buck and Half-Jaw short stories were also memorable.
And The Fall of Reach is a perfect initiation to the series.

I just read the revised edition with the new stuff from 343i. I was hooked from the get go. And the adjunct is really informative and interesting.
