Favorite allies in Halo

Your brothers in arms, they always have your back, through thick and thin. Name your favorite ally, be it a type of NPC or specific character that fought with you, or both! Just name the character/ unit and the games that they were in.

My favorite character is Chips Dubbo in the first 3 Halo games, and favorite unit are the ODSTs in both Halo 2 and 3.

In The Ark (Halo 3) there’s an ODST who I call Red because of his secondary color. I do everything I can to make sure he lives.

Of course, I also have to mention Sgt Johnson.

The Marines and ODST’s from Halo’s 1-3. (Not the Halo 4 marines, I didn’t like them). I’ve always enjoyed having the support in the campaign. Especially on Heroic or Legendary and not to mention how many times they’ve saved me.

To me, all secondary AI characters are “ensigns” - hence…expendable.

Now, when an ensign does something worthwhile…the they because “top men”. THOSE guys are valuable.

I like the Army soldiers in Reach, if only because they’re incredibly effective while in the passenger/turret seat of a vehicle. Seriously, I’ve seen rockets curve and Elites sniped out of Reverants whenever I play on Swordbase, and place one NPC in the Gauss turret, and the other in the passenger seat with a rocket launcher.

The AI in Reach is also smart enough to know NOT to fire a rocket if the explosion will harm the vehicle/player, unlike the Marines of Halo 3. Seriously, I’ve died from friendly fire on the Ark from the passenger with the rocket launcher more times than I can count.

The Army troopers were probably the best gunners but out of vehicles their AI wasn’t as good as it was in past games. In Halo: Reach on normal I watched 3 marines (Not army troopers but they share the same AI) struggle to kill a single jackal and 2 grunts. All the marines died and the jackal and grunts were barely got hit. In Halo 3 I’ve seen fewer marines demolish multiple jackals and grunts with ease.

AI aside, that may also be because the AR in Halo Reach is absolute cabbage, while the one in 3 is decent.

I think in terms of best ground AI, I think the Marines aboard the Pillar of Autumn (i.e., Halo CE’s Marines), were the most effective. Probably weren’t the smartest, given the time, but they had a tendency of grouping up, which, while made them susceptible to grenades, DID mean that like five MA5Bs would be focused entirely on one enemy, completely shredding them.

I remember those CE marines. Individually they weren’t that strong but once they group up they were pretty much unstoppable. Until they got picked off one by one that is. I think the Halo 2/3 marines had better AI since they had better combat capabilities and had better individual AI rather than only being useful in large numbers.
