After playing both Domination and Deathmatch I’d love to share why I think Halo Wars 2 is going to be amazing. Firstly, the bases are just amazingly well designed and super easy to tell buildings apart! The generators are definitely a good touch seeing how I always thought Halo Wars’ simplicity was missing an additional form of resources. Lastly, I also love not being able to see how close buildings are to completion. I found that sort of information to be completely irrelevant especially in an RTS.
Moving now to the leader powers and trees. Many cheers to 343 and CA for making a glorious leader power tree that lets you unleash powers that have maybe a 10% chance of working. It’s almost as good as not being able to use the Chieftain’s Y ability. I also want to mention that I now understand Invulnerability does not mean indestructible. It clearly only means that your units will die at nearly the same rate as usual when using such powers. Cleansing beams and giant orbiting cannons of doom are also no match for the mighty armor plating of a tank. I find this to be a good tactical choice since you only get leader powers as fast as a snail can finish the 100-yard sprint.
I’m not going to spend too much time on the overall atmosphere of the game. I think we can all agree that the oddly designed units and buildings feel entirely fitting for the Halo universe. Covenant bases that look like Wookie huts on Kashyyyk? Why not? I’d much rather have that than the sleek design in Halo Wars! Apparently the UNSC has been feeding their Elephants a good daily dose of Wheaties because they’ve blossomed into beautiful bases! Keep up the good work 343 and CA!
All in all it’s a great improvement. It’s almost as good as MCC was at launch. I see no problems with it and would be more than happy to throw money at it.
