Fan Theory: The Rookie is Agent Locke

Who is the least developed playable character in the Halo series? Easily The Rookie from Halo 3: ODST. He was a voiceless protagonist with little revealed about his background. Despite the fact that Noble Six was also a vessel for the player to immerse themselves into, even they were at least given a voice and some specification of their importance in the war.

We virtually know nothing about the Rookie other than some of his personal details (e.g. service number, height, rank and place of birth) and that he thought in the battle of Battle of New Jerusalem in Halo Evolutions short-story, Dirt.

Considering the fact that The Rookie almost single-handedly survived on his own in New Mombassa and helped turn the tide of the war with Vergil, I think this is grounds to make him a war hero and to give him a big promotion. I’ve heard that a lot of ODSTs were promoted to Spartan-IVs upon undergoing the augmentations.

Personally I think it would be crazy to forget about The Rookie and the characters of Halo 3: ODST. This is a good way to continue that as it merges the events ODST with the greater Halo story. Something just seems appropriate about The Rookie and the Arbiter searching for the Master Chief, the original and central character we’ve played as.

And hopefully it would expand The Rookie’s character and role, too; 343i have showed interest in expanding the roles of their characters and integrating different mediums of Halo lore (i.e books and smaller games like Halo Wars). I really don’t see why they couldn’t do this.

i would love this. The only name that we know the rookie goes by is J.D. I don’t know if those are his initials or if he is like my friend. JayDavid Jackson, we call him JD as well but the Locke part wouldn’t be too far of a stretch for a code name.

Either way Locke=Rookie is ok in my book.

There is also the fact that Loche live action actor is black and (unless the rookie is really ashy) his fingers are white or if the actor playing Locke only his the body and not the person.

Unless they’re planning on expanding the Rookie past a generic “imagine yourself here” character, then I wouldn’t want him to be Locke.

However, from the two minutes that we’ve seen him, him not saying a word holds a small amount merit.

But I wouldn’t consider a two minute trailer a good judge of identity, especially when the context of the Arbiter’s speech wouldn’t require a response from Locke. Additionally, Locke has been confirmed to be black and a NEW character, and the Rookie is clearly white and an OLD character, so we can instantly rule out any remote possibility here.

The Rookie is white, Locke is black. So…no.

I Want rookie to return like most do, but its a new character

Would LOVE this, but didn’t 343i say Locke is a brand new character?

> The Rookie is white, Locke is black. So…no.

If you’re speaking of race/ethnicity, I don’t think any significant details have been given about Locke or The Rookie’s background. I think it was established that The Rookie was born on Earth’s moon.

> Would LOVE this, but didn’t 343i say Locke is a brand new character?

Yeah, that’s the only problem I see with this. Although that could mean a new direction taken towards an underdeveloped existing character. Perhaps 343i could be going for a ‘Metroid’ moment were we learn of Agent Locke’s background. shrugs

In Halo: Nightfall, a live action digital feature, Locke is being played by Mike Colter, a black actor. Unless he’s wearing a helmet through all of Nightfall, there’s no possibility of him being white and by extension, the Rookie.

Admittedly I wasn’t aware of that.

As was pointed out, Locke is being portrayed by a black actor in Nightfall and you can clearly see the skin color of the Rookie’s fingers in ODST. Besides, Locke is a new character anyway, so the Rookie angle falls apart.

I guess there’s the possibility that we won’t be seeing his face? We didn’t see Daniel Cudmore’s face in his role as Master Chief in Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. It’s possible that Mike Colter might just be the physical embodiment of the Rookie.

That sounds like special pleading and ignores the fact that Locke is a new character. New character means new character.

Personally, I’d find that not showing Locke’s face or hearing his voice would be pretty boring character development.

On a side note, in regards to characters from ODST, I think it would be cool to see ONI Operative Dare in Nightfall. After all, her voice actor is an actual actor and both Tricia Helfer (the voice actor) and Veronica Dare look similar.

The same goes with Buck.

forget about the rookie, they need to have Buck back and more Nathan Fillion!

and while I was thinking about it Buck could take over as the Sgt.Johnson type role in H5G

I love this theory, but it’s not going to happen.

the rookie joined the s4 program

Johnson’s “spiritual successor” would be better as SGT Stacker in my opinion.

While we can assume that he was still a marine in Halo 4, we didn’t ever see him in person, but rather heard his dialogue. So we don’t really know if he joined the Spartan IV’s or not.

It’s a new character so not happening.
But if it were Rookie, I would be disappointed because I didn’t much like him. Mainly because he was just another silent main character.

I approve of this.

How do you even know that?

And if the rookie was agent Locke, god DANG that would be awesome!!
