So a few days ago I discovered a short movie based on the Fall of Reach novel on Netflix. I remember reading the book ages ago so I cannot remember much from it. Has anyone watched this, and what do you think of it?
When I watched it I suddenly had memories from the book coming back to me, as it was the first bit of it that I really liked.

Didn’t really like it,it retconned a lot of things and I think it was unnecessary

Pretty sure 343 said the book takes precedence over the movie, so a lot of the visual things that were seemed like stupid retcons should just be seen as artistic license.
Maybe a full movie would have been better, as the animations seemed like it was like I was watching another terminal video. Needless to say it wasn’t too bad. When I read the book years ago my favorite part was John growing up and training which is what this short film seemed to cover.
I don’t know why they didn’t do something bigger like an actual movie. Also why are the Elites wearing the armor from Halo 4 and 5? I feel like the only person who misses the way they looked in games mainly 2, 3, H2A and Reach.
Personally I hated it. At first I thought it was blind nostalgia for the book so I gave it another chance thinking “it probably wasn’t that bad.”. Well, I was dead wrong and I couldn’t get 20 minutes in before I shut it off. All in all it is a horrible adaptation that never should have seen the light of day if you ask me.

You’re allowed to dislike it, but personally, if you didn’t watch it the whole way through, it doesn’t seem like you would have a full constructive opinion as to why you don’t like it. I like to actually watch/read/or play something the whole way through so that way if I want to get into a discussion as to why I liked/disliked something, I can give you an explanation as to why I feel that way and give examples and stuff. It’s like playing a video game for twenty minutes and then putting it on the shelf to collect dust or returning it because it was “trash” when you didn’t give it a chance long enough.
Not trying to defend it. I thought it was okay, but I think we sometimes need to look past nostalgia blindness, otherwise we’ll be so close-minded. I understand being precious over what older stuff you loved, but it’s a good idea to open up to new things, even things like adaptations and remakes no matter how good or -Yoink- they may appear at first.

Maybe they wanted to visualize the book. How many of us out there can picture entirely what is happening in a book when we read it? (I can, but maybe not everyone)

I’m gonna stop you right there. I said I watched it and gave it a second chance, meaning rewatching it. Refer to my post. And on my second time through I couldn’t make it 20 minutes in because it was so bad. So yeah… hope I cleared that up for you.
So you clearly misunderstood me. And please don’t ask me to open up to new things like this as if you know me, because I do all the time actually. I’ve read various manga that have had anime and movie adaptations (same for books to movies) and I’ve been more than fine with a lot of them for one reason: they didn’t gut the soul from the source material as 343 did with this “adaptation”.

Sorry for the double post, but editing two posts into one on mobile really sucks and is a bit difficult for me… but let’s get to it: They already visualized the book in a much more faithful adaptation in the Fall of Reach comics they released years ago. 2009 I think. So I don’t think that argument stands too well.

Yes,however they aren’t visually depicting how it is in the book

Introduce casual fans to Blue Team. That’s also why they took visual liberties with armor, to make them distinguishable like in Halo 5.

I have the right to ask people that if I am unsure. You’re not the boss of me. I make suggestions, and I just personally think you are jumping to conclusions if you think it is bad just like that regardless of how many times you have seen it. And do not tell me what to do again.

I think that’s the whole point of adaptations in most cases.

There is no need to shut me down like that. Not everyone has read those comics, myself included just so you know.

So if I didn’t like it because I’ve watched it fully I’m jumping to conclusions when I(and the vast majority of the lore community) say it was bad? That is some real backwards logic right there, ma’am. And not once in that post did I tell you to do anything but not talk as if you know me… so don’t you dare try to point the finger at me when you are the one who started this because YOU misunderstood what I was saying then tried to make me out to be a bad guy who’s opinion mattered less than yours.
Honestly it should’ve been named something other than The Fall of Reach. The movie ends when Sam dies, and only has a scene or three of Reach post-glassing. Irked that some real goodies from the books weren’t included, but happy to finally have seen the II’s training days to some degree.
