Fall of Reach is boring

I’ve finished reading Fall of Reach and I must admit, it totally bored me. Before, I’ve read Contact Harvest, Forerunner Saga, New Blood and currently I’m reading Hunters in the Dark - all these books are just more interesting. All the characters in Fall of Reach seems rather flat, with just plain awesome Master Chief, almost as awesome Keyes and highly intelligent but still empathetic dr Halsey.

Story’s not only predictable (especially when someone played games etc. ;)), but it doesn’t fit other books/movies/games etc (e.g. it seems humans haven’t even met elites or used powershields before end of august 2552).

I know that 14 or 13years ago Fall of Reach was obligatory for Halo fans, but I don’t feel that it aged very well. That being said, should I still give a try to First Strike, Cole Protocole and Flood?

You should definitely read at least First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx. While I disagree about The Fall of Reach being “boring” (I guess it depends on what you’re looking for), Nylund gets better over time, and in TFoR’s defense the book was written in seven weeks or something like that.

Fall of Reach was a backstory on the spartan program. Later on butchered by Halo: Reach. I would hardly say boring though, unless you’re searching for action packed books, if you’re looking for that, you should read the next books, specially Ghosts of Onyx.

Im a little over halfway through First Strike, after forcing myself to finish The Flood, and its awesome. I, on the other hand, rather enjoyed The Fall of Reach.

Honestly, I found Contact Harvest and Primordium to be particularly dull. Especially Primordium, god, that book was almost unbearable.

So, how you can read those but not the Fall of Reach is beyond me…

Uh, Reach doesn’t really do anything tothe backstory of the spartan program. It mostly just changes how the final battle goes down, but doesn’t really effect the S-II’s.

I did a re-read of my original copy about a year ago. It was interesting to see what all had changed, and what hadn’t over the years. I’ll agree characters were a bit dry.

The only reason why I think Fall of Reach is boring is because it has been rehash too many times in different mediums and now we are getting an animated series. It’s diluting the importance of the book in my honest opinion, don’t get me wrong I can’t wait to watch it but I rather have the animated series be something else like the Battle of Harvest, a Spartan III mission our one of Cole’s battles in space, some new material

Sounds like you read the 2001 version not the updated 2012 definitive edition so I am sure it sounds out-dated when you read it.:stuck_out_tongue:

That said peoples tastes are subjective. Had more of a connection with the death of Sam in FoR then the death of doctor forgettable in hunters in the dark. Hunters in the dark was predictable and eye rolling at time while also making huge errors… (how can there still be life yet no sign of the flood).

Wow, just the opposite! I think Primordium is the best book this far. Forerunner - Flood war seen through the eyes of simple man and that ancient, mythical world - pure epicness. As much as I was sceptical towards all this idea with ancient humans and Forerunners, I’ll love to read/play/watch more about this stuff.

Also Contact Harvest is at least level above Fall of Reach. Just compare relations (or rather lack of) within Blue Team to Johnson and Byrne.

Yup. It’s 2001 edition. What are differences between versions?

I thought fall of reach is one of the best halo books there is.

There are quite a few. The new version doesn’t fix everything it should, but it does adjust a few details like the first encounter with the Elites.

the definitive edition contains
-Excerpts of Office of Naval Intelligence interrogations of the Covenant.
-Missives and mandates issued by the Covenant Declassified transmissions regarding the defence of Reach
-A personal insight into the Spartan program
-The Official Evacuation Order for all inhabitants of Reach.
-Correction of dates, times and Lore.

the book is lore building and very much the History and origin story of why with context.

@ teusz sorry you didn’t like it but for many fans it was the first look at the greater universe.
