It seems like there is no Fall Damage in Halo Infinite. Given the fact that Fall Damage was just implemented in Halo CE, Reach and ODST (If I’m not mistaken), it’s not that surprising.
However, I’d love to have Fall Damage as an option for custom games. I honestly think that something simple as this would add more depth, risk & reward for more vertical maps & in custom games.
I wonder if this won’t be an option. Especially for parkour maps, or gametypes like “the floor is lava”. Yeah, you could just add a kill floor, but there’s something satisfying about the thud you hear.
If 343 would like to truly balance the game fall damage is the way to go. It doesn’t need to kill every time passed a certain height, but just damage a player doing the high risk movement. If you jump from a 3rd story on a building to chase someone that’s should be a risk. That risk should be the fall and how much damage you take. Even if its 20% that could change the outcome in a firefight while your shields are low. This would also help balance things like the grapple shot to make it feel not so OP.
I think there needs to be a middle ground. There shouldn’t be fall damage on everything but I shouldn’t be able to jump off anything without penalty. I get the grappleshot changes this a bit, but that shouldn’t negate everything related to height.
I’m glad Max Hoberman made the decision to remove Fall damage. Balance is not forcing a player to decide whether they fell from for example 10 ft versus 9 ft. It was just annoying and something which never had a meaningful impact since 2001 when CE released. Only reason Reach and ODST had it was because of timeline and character advances.
I’m not entirely against it as an option for Customs, though it would be rare to ever be turned on, so there’s no point.
Fall Damage is a mechanic that is the basis for high risk, high reward in a system. Where’s the risk “tension” in jumping off a high ledge? …Nothing with no fall damage. I agree in 90% of halo maps there shouldn’t be player death, because most maps are only 3 or 4 stories high is 4v4. However having fall damage to a degree, say 20-30% shields, would change how players approach encounters.
It would also add a punishment to failing to grapple correctly or missing a repulsor jump. With clamber there is even the backup to save players with near misses.
