Extraction Thoughts

I just played a match of Extraction where both teams got to four extractions and then no further sites popped up. It became a game of default slayer at that point because there were no more objecctives. Always fun to end in a tie. Glitch in that particular game aside, it’s an alright diversion from simple death match modes.

It’s now obvious that this game type is essentially a variation of Territories. I never got the opportunity to make it inside the extraction zone of another team long enough to know if you can stop their process or not. If so, it’s nearly the exact same thing, but with a different scoring method.

The term extraction alone had me hoping it was something more akin to Invasion. I was picturing your team escorting a core or, to fit with Halo 4’s themes, a Forerunner relic from point A to point B all One Flag CTF or One Bomb Assault style.

All-in-all, it’s nowhere near as fun for me as being able to now throw the Oddball, but not anywhere near as much of a letdown as whatever Regicide is.

I’m really liking extraction so far! I didn’t think it was going to be all that great but after playing a few games of it, I’m pleasantly surprised at how much fun it is (at least for me anyways).

Multiplayer has always been a struggle for me, but with H4 (yes, i know, its more oriented for the less skilled probably) I am finding myself enjoying the objective based gametypes a lot more. Extraction, although yeah a variation on territories, introduces a neat little tech/animation. I haven’t played it much but have liked it quite a bit so far.

Interesting concept, but the spawns break the actual game. I’ve played a few games of it, and every time one team gets a point, the other team just goes for the other site without even trying to block the other’s capture. It also doesn’t help when one team spawns right on top of an extraction point, essentially giving them a free point. Instead of having the points on the side, y’know, where people spawn, have more neutral points in the middle areas of the map.

I would also suggest having only one point at a time, so people are actually fighting for the point instead of letting people just wait the game out. I feel like the games would be more intense and last longer as a result of people actually fighting for the objective. It would be like a Neutral Flag/Bomb/Territories game.

The actual point of Extraction is for each team to have access to their own sites until the final fifth site (making the OP’s problem odd). The metagame is to choose when to deny the other team their site or at least delay it so you can catch a lead; whereas the other must play more aggressively to gain a lead. This means constantly shifting offense and defense, similar to Dominion, but much more organic.

This is a very good gametype, but I get a sense with this thread and playing online that people don’t really ‘get it’ as far as strategy is concerned. You can’t have one point at a time, it would just be a weird KotH. And how it is now is not a broken game, I think you haven’t considered how it’s actually played. I hope this explanation will help you enjoy the game and it’s real nature.
