With all the new achievements being revealed, (and in so doing revealing terminals as well) I’ve been wondering… will there be free roaming in Halo 4?
Allow me to explain. In Halo’s 1-3 and ODST, you were able to explore all the terrain. You could take advantage of Halo’s sandbox in unique ways, find easter eggs in the most strangest of places (microsoft sam’s voice on the right tower at the end of Halo 3’s ‘The Covenant’). You could pull crazy stunts like driving warthogs to places they weren’t suposed to, (some may remember an example of this in maps like Halo CE’s ‘The Silent Cartographer’)
I know that some maps on these games were more linear than others, but I’m talking about the maps that you could explore more thoroughly, like Halo 2’s ‘Outskirts’ and ‘Metropolis’. I always climbed onto the roofs and ambushed those pesky jackel snipers from above.
In Halo Reach, a lot of the free roaming was taken away, (or at least it felt like it to me) either with invisble walls or ‘Return to the battlefield’ flashing on your screen. This to me was a disappointment as one of the things I like about is being able to roam around a little.
I know it’s important to keep the level somewhat linear, so the player knows where to go, but I couldn’t help feeling like I couldn’t go where I wanted to go in Halo Reach.
Halo 4. New designers. Not much is known about the campaign or how it works. I just hope they stick to the less linear side of things and allow us to explore Requiem, not just admire it from afar…
What do you think? Should we be able to go where no spartan has gone before and explore Requiem to its fullest, or should the maps be more linear and easy to navigate.
Yeah, I agree. They shouldn’t shift the entire focus of the game to be exploration, but it would be nice to have it. Also, loved the little Star Trek reference.
I remember them saying they wanted to have that feel from CE were you could go anywhere, but the way you were supposed to go was clear enough you wouldn’t get terribly lost.
I can agree. I want to be able to explore in campaign, but leave in kill boundaries in multiplayer. There’s nothing I hate more than people killing from cheap spots.

Yeah, they should be in multiplayer, but when it comes to campaign, we should be able to go where we like. I remember going too far out on Halo 2 and ended up teetering on the edge of the abyss! (I reached the edge of the map lol)
> People had the option to to get out of the boundaries of “Winter Contingency” and “New Alexandria” in reach.

The main problem with Halo 3 and Reach is that the invisible barrier can suck you right back in.
Even if you get out of the map, if you try to get back in the map, you’ll sucked right in with no way to go back, forcing you to find a way outside again.
I think getting out of maps shouldn’t be too limited (getting on Phantom turret in Halo 3, armor lock/drop shield on dropship in Reach) and complex (even when you got outside of the maps in Halo 3 and Reach, you had to go through further obstacles, such as invisible barriers, death barriers, etc.) but it certainly should require some skill (i.e. grenade jumping, trick jumping, clipping).
I hated how you needed Co-op in Halo 3 and Reach to fully explore maps. Respawning on a buddy to get past an invisible barrier when in CE and Halo 2, you could have just jumped to it.
I absolutely loved the exploration of Halo 2. Pretty much every map had something great beyond the designated pathways to progress thru the Campaign. Super Bouncing was my thing so of course I would explore to find new places to bounce to :). I was very distraught when playing Breakneck for the first time. I miss the exploration of Campaign as well as MP maps!!

Ah, I remember exploring Delta Halo with a Ghost. Some of my fondest memories.
