Explain to me how the rankings work. Or don't work

After the 10 qualifying matches in Team Arena, I win 8 out of 10 matches. My k/d for just those 10 games is 1.4. Not saying they are the greatest games of my life but I perform relatively well. Even with the final match having 2 of my teammates quit, 2v4 through most of it, we still win and I finish with 24 kills and 13 deaths. From what I noticed, all of these games I seem to be playing against, and beating, an even mix of mostly platinum, gold, or unranked players. After the 10 matches I rank Gold 1. I’m sorry I just don’t get it. How much better do I have to play in order to rank higher? 8/10 and 1.4 k/d is pretty solid.

For comparison sake, last week when my roommate qualifies in team arena, he goes 7/10 and severely negative in his k/d and he gets placed in Platinum.

I played a few more matches after I ranked but was frustrated and ended up quitting the last one. I never quit, but I really am pretty frustrated with this. Because now I am expected to grind out hours upon hours of games to get up to diamond or onyx, only to have the playlist reset next month and do it all over again.

If this ranking system worked better and was more evenly based on both w/l and individual performance, I guess I would be happy with it. However that being said, veteran Halo fans have been asking for the H2/H3 1-50 ranking system for years now and for some reason that is beyond my comprehension, 343 is hellbent on not doing it. It was a simple system that worked as it was intended and the players loved it. What’s the problem?

If you never quit but quit then which is it?

The ranking system isn’t going away. It may suck but it’s designed for competitive players who leverage teamwork and strategy. If you’re not at that level or have others to play with then I’d seriously consider finding another game.

Look this isn’t official but based on my experience with ranking this is the answer I can come up with for your question.

During the first ten games to qualify in an arena playlist, the game sets you up with other people each with a similar Ranking (bronze, silver, gold, etc.). The first game you play (game number 1) is a match filled with people that are ranked bronze or silver. After the match the game checks to see how well you did against them. If you completely destroyed them it jumps you up to silver or diamond. If you barely held your own you stay within that rank for the next games to see where to set you in (bronze or silver).

If you destroyed the bronze or silver players they set you up with platnums and diamonds. If after playing that game you still come out way on top they set you up to the onix division. If you didn’t perform well with these group of people they will test you out again and fine tune you to a rank (maybe it was platnum since with diamond you might have struggled)
as you can see the systems seems to test you out on ten games each with different type of ranks. Depending on how well you rank within them that’s where you will be placed after your tenth game

It’s not a matter of how we’ll you performed, but how well you performed against who. After you get your rank the system only takes into account the games you’ve won and nothing else.

Sorry, what I meant was that I very rarely quit, though I ended up quitting the last match I played tonight.

I get that the current ranking system is not going away, but don’t you at least think that the algorithm that they are using could use a little work? How do I place in Gold with those results and my roommate goes Platinum with having done worse? That example alone tells you something is wrong here.

And I get that it is designed for competitive players, I am a competitive player. I’ve been playing this game since the beginning. I was a 50 in team slayer for both H2 and H3 so it’s not like I’m out of my element here.

I’m sorry, but that’s BS. Halo may have had a strong competitive scene once, but believe it or not there have been plenty of people- the majority of friends and players that I have come across, in fact- who have loved Halo since 2001 just for it’s “fun” factor. I don’t understand how 343 can go all out for the “competitive” player with a harsh and, frankly, weird, ranking system and absolutely no social playlists or “fun” gametypes at all, and completely abandon everybody else. And telling someone to just “find another game” because they don’t have a team to play with or aren’t super skilled kinda blows my mind a little. With that attitude, you’re just going to encourage veteran players to leave the game, and discourage new players from getting into the game simultaneously. That wouldn’t really bode well for Halo 5’s longevity…

How is saying Halo 5 is designed for competitive play BS? Other versions may have catered to both competitive and casual players but not Halo 5. 343 wanted to be different than Bungie’s take on Halo so this is one of the things they did to achieve it. I’m not saying different is better, but it’s the reality.

I started playing Halo 5 with 8 friends who were casual players but wanted to play well. Now I’m the only one left. A lot of casual players have moved on.

i went 5/10 and got the same rank. it just puts everyone gold 1

You don’t have to win that many matches to rank up.

I don’t consider myself a casual player. But regardless, that’s not the point. The point is the ranking system is currently broken. To prove my point, I just went back in and played my qualifying games for swat. Both my play and my win/loss results were significantly worse then it was when I ranked Gold in Team Arena earlier today, though I managed to rank Onyx in Swat. Explain that to me? I play worse and lose more games and I rank 3 tiers higher then when I play great and win almost every game.
