So I’ve seen people say that the story in Halo 5 pulls a lot from the expanded universe. I’m all about exploring more lore surrounding my favorite games, however I’ve never read any of the Halo books. Anyone have any suggestions as to what titles match up to Halo 5 the best? What books give more character backstory?
Any suggestions would be great! Plus I think its just a fun topic to discuss. Be wary of Spoilers if you are reading through though!

So, depends on which team you wish to know more about. If it’s Osiris, there isn’t that much in the way of reading. Tanaka is introduced in the comics, I believe. Buck comes from Halo 3:ODST, but he has a short novel written about his prior life and life after and also how he became a Spartan. It’s called New Blood I believe. Hunters in the Dark introduced Vale, though there isn’t that much about her back story in the book. Really, all of these books / comics explain how they became Spartans.
If you wish to know more about Blue Team I would highly recommend reading Fall of Reach, but it’s an animated movie now so if you don’t feel like reading the book, watch that instead. I would also recommend reading First Strike. Fall of Reach and First Strike has Halsey in it as well.
Locke doesn’t really have a whole lot I believe. The Nightfall short series introduced him, MCC gave us his briefing on Thel’ Vadame, or the Arbiter. Can’t remember anything else involving him.
New Blood has got to be my favorite expanded universe novel right next to Fall of Reach, that book made me love Buck.
The Greg Bear, Forerunner trilogy is really informative on Forerunner history and culture as well as the creation of the Halo arrays and the Monitors.
Excellent suggestions. I’ve got a road trip coming up, I might check to see if I can find them on audio book. I feel like I should definitely check out Fall of Reach.

You’ll find all of the books I mentioned in audio form expect for Tanaka’s comic.
