Hey guys, I’ve spent ages working on a video series that tackles EU content for franchises and kind of goes through and breaks each piece apart. I do a short run down of each piece, review them and then I sort them into a chronological timeline and a recommended timeline. The first video in the series released yesterday and I made it for one of my favourite franchises, Halo. I would love to hear your feedback and tell me if I’ve missed anything/made any mistakes. Thanks a lot.

I’m a bit confused on the focus of the video. If you are focusing on discussing only the content in order of release why do you then recommend the 2010 and 2011 releases of the book/ the Anniversary version of Halo Combat Evolved? I mean it’s good information but I’m wondering what the aim of these videos is. Good video over all though.

Probably because the definitive editions of the novels and the anniversary editions of the games are the hard canon versions? Why bother reading or playing the old ones first, when they’re irrevelant now? Just go ahead and experience the canon iterations right off the bat.

I suppose if one considers the newer ones as “canon” but the reason these newer book versions we’re even created was because when Microsoft screwed Bungie by giving them a shorter timeline to make their next games than they needed, Bungie said screw it and created the highly contradictory and plothole filled Halo Reach as a giant middle finger to Microsoft and indirectly to the fans of the original Eric Nylund novels. The newer versions of the book try to fix the inaccuracies but ultimately fail to do so. I personally prefer to toss out the newer versions and Halo Reach as canon as they were not Bungie’s original vision before Microsoft interfered and they have far too many plot holes to be considered logical at all.

When making the video I realised that the people this content would help most are ones that haven’t already jumped into the EU and so they’re likely not massively dedicated to it just yet and possibly more relaxed about it, just looking for some good content from a world they love. While dedicated fans can discuss the continuity issues at length I’m assuming most who seek this type of video out will probably forget the conflicting details brought up in halo fall of reach by the time they get to the reach game. Because of this I aimed it towards giving them the most up to date canon so I recommend the latest releases of fall of reach and then for halo anniversary, that’s the easier version to get hold of this generation. The video is mostly aimed towards drawing new people into the fandom and EU and so I planned accordingly, I don’t think many new players will be willing to go back to the original xbox copy of the game or seek out the original release of FOR on ebay instead of a one click buy via amazon. I’ll also note that I personally would still take the definitive edition as canon over the original anyway so that recommendation does fall in line with what I agree with.
I loved the video! What sort of research did you do before making this video?

I had to compile a list of all the Halo EU content and by release date figure what game they should be tied to in terms of video, then I checked out all that media (and adaptations) and made the first video once done. video for Halo 2 will be a while as I work my way through the content.
