I just had to play a 42m long stockpile game to complete a challange and get atleast some XP for the match. This is ridiculous.
They really should implement per-match xp in this season cause good god it’s unbearably slow.
I don’t wanna have to jump into challenges between each match and work out how to progress the battle pass I bought. I want to just play the game and understand I am progressing even just a small bit. The challenges should be the meat and potatoes of big xp gain sure but don’t punish me for playing the game casually.
I do agree it is a bit of a grind. I preferred what we had in tech preview of 500xp per level instead of 1000xp. The daily matches played xp does help a bit, but not by much unless you use a xp boost or double xp boost which can be earned through battle pass progression. I agree that it does feel designed to force monetary use over playing at least for this first season, but we do have till May 2022 to complete this pass.
For people like me with insane work schedules who will be lucky to get in 10hrs per week, I think that 1000 credits giving you 5 levels of upgrade is somewhat fair from a time saving standpoint. That being said we definitely need more options to earn that xp in a timely manner without dropping tons of money each season, for the more casual player.
This thread makes a lot of good points and I’m holding judgement until I see what changes they make for the follow up season. For now I’ll have enough time to grind up to 100 until May, I don’t need to hit 100 tomorrow, because if I did I wouldn’t have much to play towards besides just having fun with friends, which I do highly enjoy.
The only real way to do your challenges in bulk is through BTB. Which I don’t particularly mind but it feels slow doing them in Arena instead.
343 needs to bring over MCC’s progression system over to Infinite, it was really good for one, better than this current system for sure.
The yellow challenges could always give you 1 tier in the Infinite battlepass, and the blue challenges could give you flat exp to progress you in the tiers.
Though, keep the weekly keystone reward challenge. THAT right there is a really welcoming addition!
I want MCC’s style of challenges too, they were pretty simplistic and less difficult to execute compared to Infinite’s.
I don’t like Infinite’s specific challenges where they make you be conscious of what you’re supposed to do.
We also need Season Challenges. (As of writing this, I don’t know if Infinite has them but if they do, perfect!)
Where there’s a catalog of challenges you can do overtime by just simply playing the game like Apex/Fortnite. Background challenges essentially that are not bounded by weekly expiration. Passively gaining exp/tiers as you play.
Another thing I’d wish they’d implement to this system is add performance exp. If you go really positive, do objectives, die the least, win the game, etc. You should be rewarded a good chunk of exp each game for doing good.
Obtaining exp naturally is unfortunately painfully slow at the moment but I don’t particularly mind as I’m more excited about stat-grinding and ranked play as a player.
Absolutely agree. It took me several hours just to get to rank 2 with this challenge system it feels like you either need to be good enough at the game [and lucky enough with rng in regards to what challenges you get] to be able to do several challenges in a single match or be rich enough to just buy your way through the battle pass if you want to progress at all it honestly feels like a giant middle finger to poor people and people who suck at the game which I am both I’d much rather be able to progress by putting time into the game rather than requiring me to either have a lot of money or to be a pro player the way it should work is you should earn a base amount of xp for completing a match and then earn more based on if you win and how well you do
I wish I never bought the battle pass. I didn’t know it was this painfully slow. I hate these challenges, I hate how everything is randomly generated. Shock Rifle is BS, it’s been 10 games, I’ve only found it once. If you want me to do specific BS, at least make the BS spawn.
At this point it would be faster to get a job at Mcdonalds and work a few days to pay to complete this Battle Pass, than it is doing it legit.
Halo 5’s Reach bundle was much fairer, it offered more armor than this battle pass and even if you unlocked it without money, it took much less time. Infinite just has the same old recycled armor and this is going to last us 6 months??? Destiny had tons and tons of armor, and I just have to have just noble team stuff for the next 6 months? Are they high? I’m pretty sure the new MCC season had more stuff.
I don’t care if you can switch which battle pass can gain xp, I’m not doing another battle pass ever again.
During the Alpha Flights earlier this year didn’t you only need 300xp to level up the pass? I think that or maybe 500xp is much more reasonable, especially when there are over 90 levels of the battlepass you have to get through. That way you can progress a little easier and not make the game feel so grindy.
Joined simply to agree with this. I love the gameplay and had a good time playing but found myself worrying about my challenges more than the objective sometimes and that’s simply not fun.
Challenges should be an XP boost, not the sole means of getting it.
Glad it works out peaches for you, but unfortunately your scheduling experience doesn’t translate well at all to everyone. Especially people who work for 8+ hours a day, come home exhausted, want to do nothing but play Halo and relax which unfortunately gets us nowhere in this HCS Playground of Challenge Grinding.

If I recall correctly, the only Halo games that awarded the player for these medals was Halo Reach in terms of the standard Commendation progression cR and MCC by contributing towards the payout from one of the xp payout categories.
However, these rewards has usually been small and only played a minior role in terms of player progression.
Small reward and progression is still more than nothing.
To be fair they could keep the challenges in the game as bonus XP gains. I don’t understand why progression is directly tied to these types of completions. It really takes away from the core experience.
On a different side note… who thought it was a good idea to lock “colors” behind a paywall… I get other cosmetics, but you took something that has been free in Halo for 20 years, and managed to sell it. If you want to sell “exotic style” colors like really off the wall types… that is a whole other argument… but Black and blue, black and red, black and orange… your charging $10 a piece… you cannot be serious with that.
I’m over 8 hours in and I’m not even to level 3. It’s insane. Not only do we just flat out need more xp, but we need more challenges that make you feel like you’re actually accomplishing something after every game. Some of the challenges can’t be completed in every game mode, so most of the time I’m sitting there with a boring “you just completed 1/5 games” to get more xp. This is really my only gripe so far.
Game is great, XP & battlepass is not, this is the worst battle pass i have ever used on a online shooter.
343 this needs sorting asap, you shouldn’t take 5 - 7 games just to go from level 1 to 2 this is so poor and i can’t understand who would have thought this would have been a good idea in the first place.
Amen, it needs to be fixed ASAP, I’m thrilled the game is as good as it is, but without a solid progression system that constantly rewards the player for playing all of that is secondary. May or March 2022 for a new system just isn’t acceptable really and the game will be dead in the water.
I’ve played for 3 hours now and have absolutely nothing to show for it, I feel I should at least have 2-3 gear pieces by now but nope. Not even in tier 1 of the battlepass either, I was prepared to buy it until I saw how scummy and slow it was. Off to a terrible start, it’s such a shame because the actual game is amazing, everything I wanted, but again without a solid rewarding progression and levelling system, none of that really matters.
I’m fine with it we will have 168 days till the next pass comes out so I’m glad ill have something to grind for and not finish early
I mean, we told them this was going to be an issue during the flights. I give it a season until they introduce XP for matches to negate the biggest criticism I have seen thus far. Maybe I wouldn’t have minded ten years ago, but I’m not in high school anymore, I can’t stay up all night grinding out in matchmaking. I work a full time job and have very little free time. It is such a shame because when I am actually playing a game, it feels so satisfying. I haven’t had this much fun playing multiplayer since Reach.

They will never speed up the XP gains on the Battle Pass. Only two ways to reach the top… grind for like a million hours or pay and they know exactly what people will do. Never going to make it easier to level up because it stops the core incentive to essentially buy boosts… this is even visible before going into a multiplayer game.
And what better way to get EVEN more money… make it so that you can access any battle pass at any time!
Without a proper in game progression system that isnt tied to a battle pass whilst I like the game I just dont see this lasting!

Agreed. The game is fun and crisp. But no incentive for winning or doing well during any match. The XP battle pass system is terrible. SLOW SLOW SLOW

we should have a base xp earning for finishing each games, + bonus if we win + bonus if we did well
