I really enjoyed the beta gameplay-wise but what impressed me most were the forge maps, Orion and Pegasus. Not only did they play well, but they nearly looked from the interior view as seamless and cohesive as the non-forge maps. I examined the maps in spectator mode to see what additions we’re getting with H5’s forge and this is what Ive found.
- cylinder blocks:pipe/pillar, small, medium, large and half cylinder.
- curved railings.
- wing/fin blocks: small and xl.
- new basic block sizes: 2x10 for one,
- cleaner and lighter metal block skins.
- improved windows; now trans-blue instead trans reddish purple.
- option to color entire block.
Overall, by improving forge by leaps and bounds- even past H2A’s excellent forge mode, 343i is on track to give H5’s multiplayer a long lifespan.
I think Forge looks great! I also liked how seamless the maps were.
What I’m thinking is that you can change the texture instead of default (Grey). The textures probably weren’t finished for the Beta, though.
I love Forge and have enjoyed the few maps I’ve made with H2A. I am looking forward to Halo 5 all around and Forge as well. The few new circular pieces we saw in Orion and Pegasus are interesting. I hope the palette gives us more items than previous games!
One thing that does concern me is how unsightly the maps looked. I agree the connectivity looks good but the textures and graphics were a major step back. It was a bit disheartening to see the lack of difference between pieces at a glance. It reminded me of playing Gears watching all the textures load in on grey boxes, but the textures forgot to load in.
Forge is rapidly becoming my favorite feature of Halo, and the forge maps in the beta are only making me more anxious for release.
I’d like to see customizeable weather effects for forge such as heavy blizzards, torrential downpours and dense fog. This could add to the challenge of matches by limiting visibility and making for some truly epic matches.
New Forge options are nice and all, but it’ll mean nothing if 343 doesn’t offer more options for custom game settings and community map playlists in matchmaking.
One of the things I loved most about Halo 3 & Reach were all the wacky game modes and custom maps available in the playlists. In Halo 4 the most interesting thing we got was Ricochet, whereas in Reach we got a ton of crazy game modes in Action Sack.

To be fair that was beta, though personally I thought the textures looked fine.
Well, I’m certainly not buying Halo 5 for the Slayer. Campaign and Forge all the way.
I am not getting excited about anything H5 related until TMCC is working properly. Or until they release a BTB H5 beta.
