EDIT: The title has been changed because now that it has been out in the opening, the subject has changed from asking if this was asked, to how this could truly be implemented into the game. Thus the title became obsolete. So I apologize for any confusion set by this.
If you play the recent BTS at this point You can clearly see how some of the players have a rank insignia near their SR number.
Here’s a screenshot I snagged. In the highlighted area, there are clearly two different ranking systems. I suggest this because other players have no private insignia near their SR, as see in this snapshot with just the number.
And what adds to my suspiscion is that it looks identical to Reach’s Private rank so we should know that this indeed some form of rank insignia. But this also adds the question of what is the maximum rank of this secondary system?
EDIT: Wait a minute…if these can be seen in killcams…doesnt that disprove that ranks will be invisible? I checked arounf the NYCC videos, and sure enough, during the killcams, the rank of the player who killed you was shown.
No. For example: Pause around 3:28, you’ll see this: A dog tag-looking emblem, and the SR2 to the right, but just to the right of that is a insignia for private.

I saw that, brown bar right? Interesting…could be ranked symbol. All of the players shown at 3:28 and before have the same rank SR-2 but the one using the Volcano Gun (Incinerator Cannon) had a single brown bar next in the kill cam. That’s the insignia for a Private IIRC.

Seems about right. The design looks like the Reach variation of Private as well.
So perhaps a return of the Inheritor rank? Or they may just stop at General this time.
I noticed that as well. I still don’t understand why people are freaking out about the ranking system when they seem to forget that there will be a true skill system. The progression system is just for instant gratification.

People have the tenancy to rage about something without thinking it through. It’s been that way for Halo 4 since the game finally received gameplay back in March and someone noticed Chief had a AA on his back.
I’d be a hypocrite to say I havent raged about something without thinking it through. I’m still not happy with the marketing decisions that are currently in place. But I really want my Best Buy pre-order stuff so I’m getting SE at Gamestop for my brother and LE at Best buy for me.

If it’s skill based ranking, i’d assume it be smart just to forgo the ranks upper Reach ranks and stop at five star general ala Halo 3.
Looks like Halo 4 has adopted the rank designs from Reach, but hopefully they are earned by skill and aren’t just there to be a pretty picture for each SR rank.

I dont believe the latter will be the case. There were others that were also SR2+ but didn’t have the rank insignia. 343 knows the community would like a true-skill rank system, it would just be redundant to have both a visual ranking system and numerical system representing the same thing when they could be used for different systems.
This has the potential to be awesome news, If the skill system is based on Military ranks instead of numbers then thats something i could get into being a veteran and all, it would make so much more sense to me

Interesting how the numerical/military ranking system is somewhat reversed compared to Halo 3’s system if this turns out to be true.

I just remember it was a field marshal as the last military rank before hitting hero.
As long as it’s based on progressing on skill and not pure grinding like the current progression rank and the progression system from Reach then I’ll be happy.
Not saying progression is bad, but Reach’s system felt like it meant for pure grinding. I’ve had Reach since day one and I’ve managed to get only to Eclipse, and I doubt I’ll get to the next rank before Halo 4 releases.
It actually goes up to SR-130. Due to the specializations you unlock at SR-50. There are 10 ranks for all 8 specializations. I think the ranking system will be similar to Reaches ranking one but you get more points for winning matches etc. This could be the largest ranking system ever. If these insignias are in Halo 4, even if its the same as reaches it will be 3X larger.
