Something I really dislike in Halo 5 is the way armor looks. Spartans no longer look like strong powerful soldiers but instead look more like toys or plastic instead. Not only that, but the quality of a lot, and I mean a lot, of armor sets is just not up to standards we have come to expect from Halo games.
The first problem with Halo 5’s spartan designs is the fact they no longer have full black undersuits. We have adressed this complaint a lot of times and it is still being talked about almost every day on the internet. Colored armor suits just make them look weird. There are so many comparison pictures and photoshopped images that clearly show that colored armor suits need to go. This will ofcourse not happen in Halo 5 because spartans aren’t actually wearing enough armor pieces around the colored areas to make it look like a proper Spartan. I do hope 343i will finally acknowledge this art problem and will bring black undersuits back in Halo 6.
The second problem with Halo 5’s spartan designs is the gloss/shine effect spartans have on their armor pieces which makes them look like plastic pieces and more like toys than actual super soldiers. Spartans are not supposed to have a gloss/shine effect on their armor, they are supposed to have details. Scratches, attachments and just a general metal look that doesn’t have this ugly gloss.
The final problem and probably one of the biggest problems with Halo 5’s spartans is the general quality of armor designs. 343i has chosen to go for quantity over quality with armor designs in Halo 5 and it turned out for the worse. Quality ALWAYS goes over quantity! There are so many variants of a single armor set, each with minor differences. Instead of putting resources in making so many variants, why not put more attention to detail and extra time into each individual armor set instead to boost to overal quality of them. I doubt any fans will remember a lot of the armor sets of Halo 5.
There are however a couple of very well designed armor sets in Halo 5. All of the armor designs for each member of Blue Team and Team Osiris are very well done and you can definitely see the designer have put extra attention and work into to make sure they look good. The Achilles armor set is another example of a quality effort in armor designs. I think I speak for all fans here that we rather have 1/3 of the armor sets we have in Halo 5 now with the quality of the armor sets mentioned above instead of having more than a 100 barely different armor sets.
It’s important to make each armor set look unique. Some of the armor sets look kinda like a mess don’t really seem to fit very well as actual armor. It needs to look more military. Make them look more bulky, cover the undersuits with more armor and put more details on each armor piece.
I play Halo for the gameplay, not the armor.

Their main concern is making sure the game play is perfect

That is not what this thread is about though. Why even bother saying that?
Someone at 343 are clearly power rangers fan because those multiplayer spartans
looks like power rangers in spandex suit lol
i agree with OP, halo reach’s armor were the best in my opinion. The details on the armors is great

Because the game is not about armor, why even bother saying that the armor is bad?
I agree that it the armor could be better, but the current armor doesn’t bother me.

If they removed customization unlocks I would stop playing matchmaking almost completely altogether. Maybe still play some Forge.

They looked rugged, tactical, and realistic. They were solid designs which actually made you look like a supersoldier. There are a few a like from Halo 5 but many (starting from Halo 4) have just gotten too exotic and weird.
Also, I have seen some say they care about gameplay and not armors… Halo is Halo because it has great multiplayer, an excellent overall story, and the expanded customization. If any one of those was taken away, you wouldn’t have a modern Halo game (which is what we are now used to). They all work together and are all important.
I agree. The suits do look a little cartoonish. Not sure about the armours being battle scared/dirty tho as MP is just a simulation training exercise.
This armor could be a lot better

Because the armor and customization is big a part of the game. Just because the gameplay is a higher priority does not mean that having decent looking armor is not important.
While I definitely agree that most of the new armor sets suck and look completely uninteresting, I wouldnt say they look like toys made of plastic.
Halo 3’s super colorful and waxy spartans and shiny elites looked like toys though.
I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t notice any of what OP said. It looks like Halo armor to me. Guess I’m not a “fine details” kind of guy, but it still looks fine. CE armor was probably the best imo.
Yeah I’m unsure if its the gloss, bright colors, or some combination but the armors all look like brittle plastic now. You might be able to argue they’ve always looked like some kind of synthetic material, but with these it’s like I could take a hammer and break off chips of them.
It kind of varies with color and lighting, but tell me these don’t look like what I just described.
Which I don’t really get because this actually looks pretty durable.
> CE armor was probably the best imo.
Yeah, pretty metallic looking.
Halo 4-5 armor is actually better than the previous armors because it makes more logical sense, body armor is mean to protect the most, weigh the least, and move the best more of a ratio type deal. In halo ce-reach armor all covered you head to toe but weighed 1/2 a ton and it had limited joint mobility, this is not good especially for war if you’re stuck in a fight like that you’re a huge target and you’re a slow target, halo 5 armor has exposed joints but still protects you allowing you to move a lot better, it also weighs about 1/2 as much as the gen 1 armors. This armor we have now all together is more practical than older halo armors since it fits more of what we go for in todays body armor world most makers sacrifice the protection area for weight and movement, after all when you’re getting shot at you’re not trying to get shot the armor is just there in case you do get shot.
As for the black undersuit that is not exactly a problem it means almost nothing, same with gloss, it reminds me of covenant armor and ships which was being shared with humans when the Sangheili allied with them
It’s power armor. Weight and bulk aren’t really an issue.
The first problem I see with Halo 4’s Chief Armor is that his central mass (where his heart is) is the most exposed out of his entire chest. But at least it doesn’t look like flimsy plastic.
