If you read the 2018 update that was published recently, it was mentioned that the Esports team was working closely with the development team on Halo Infinite. It mentioned that the Esports team was influencing gameplay. I mean no disrespect towards the Esports community, but I am worried that 343 will take their word over ours. I do not want to see another overtly competitive Halo multiplayer, I want a relaxing multiplayer experience with some moments of tension thrown in there. Like Halo 3. So please, 343, please make sure you implement gameplay in a way that both casual and competitive players can enjoy.
they should. Games should be built around being competitive and fair.
I can assure you the competitive community didn’t ask for any of the crap in Halo 5. They’re not too fond of it either. All the gameplay mechanics in H5 came about by 343 and their “pro team”.

And yet H5 competitive play was much better than 4 and Reach IMO.
Sure they’re influencing gameplay, but I’m pretty sure they said they strictly for Esports, not the entire game. Halo 5 is no different, HCS doesn’t play like the vanilla game so why would infinite be any different?
It’s really no different than when MLG worked with Halo in the older games. For all you know, influencing gameplay can be just one set playlist IE MLG.
Do I think Esports influenced to much? Hell no, I see it the very opposite as being hard because of artificial BS doesn’t =competitive and the pro players can tell you just that.
If Esports really influenced to much, why did we get stiff like firefight? Or an updated forge they don’t use in HCS, or all the other modes and gametypes they don’t use? Are you under the impression they cater to the 1%? Cause i don’t see not one thing supporting that they prioritize them over everyone else.
I’m assuming they’re referring to the competitive playlists like HCS (Team Arena) for example.
Here’s my opinion. As long as Halo Infinite has lots of playlists and game modes at launch, including those that are not made to be fair/competitive such as Firefight, Infection, Action Sack, fiesta etc. then I don’t really care if they change the game mechanics based on the input of the esports community. The competitive pro nerds can remove sprint and clamber to their hearts’ content as long as I can play my BTB Heavies with a useful motion tracker.

I can definitely agree there.

Competitive play was pretty much dead for reach & H4 so tough to compare. Yes 5 was a step in the right direction but it was heavily pushed.
I think H2/3 reigns at the top still for MLG, which is why i think competitive play will return to a more similar fashion to the classic style gameplay that was loved in the early days of MLG.

I’ve got to agree there.
Not sure what that actually means yet. I just hope the game is enjoyable across the board whether it be competitive or social. I feel H5 was too much on the competitive side, hard to enjoy at a casual level.
The idea that 343 is listening to competitive Halo players to the degree it has any large effect on gameplay is laughable as is the idea that Halo 5 was in any way an “overtly competitive” Halo game.
No 343 era Halo game is what you get if competitive Halo players had any meaningful influence in terms of overall design. At most it takes the form of little tweaks that nudge the game in a more competitive direction.
That being said, there is a big difference between competitive Halo players having a big influence and “Esports(TM)” having a big influence. AAA publishers/devs are just looking at the success of other big names(like Overwatch) and just see a lot of money making and advertising potential. The current Halo tournament scene is not a grassroots affair like it once was, it is artificially held up by the IP owner pumping in large prize pools. They are just trying to emulate the success of others pushing the idea of “esports” as seen in other games at the expense of their own.
Halo 5 has had issues with just about every demographic of Halo player for one reason or another. Blaming the competitive community or lumping them in with the “esports” push from developers is not really fair.
I’m not sure what it is, but having played a bunch of TMCC recently, I’m finding Halo 4 much more tolerable than Halo 3 and even enjoyable. I think the base mechanics, movement, physics, aim are outstanding in Halo 4. If 343 had done away with random and personal ordnance and toned down the loadouts and abilities, 4 would have been far more successful and well received. And seriously, what in the eff was 343 thinking by adding promethean vision? If they would have kept promethean vision, invis, and jet pack from Halo 4 in addition to the removal ordnance, the game would have been better more popular than halo 3 in the long term. heck I can’t stand halo 3. The game plays like an atari from the 80’s. Slow, clunky, and ugggggggly. When I’m in the social slayer playlist in TMCC it’s the most frustrating experience ever to get Halo 3 over and over and over again.
What people often fail to understand is that a game company is not just a robot that takes in feedback, and cranks out a product solely made from that feedback. It’s a team of people, all of whom are capable of independent, critical thought, and who have their own ideas and ideals. No single piece of feedback makes it into the game without being thoughout about and accepted by multiple people. No single piece of feedback is independent, but is judged with respect to all the other goals of the game. No piece of feedback makes it into the game if the people it passes through think it’s rubbish.
Whatever you think of Halo 5, or any other Halo game for that matter, the game did not turn out the way it did because of the feedback the developers listened. It turned out the way it did because of decisions made by the team that made the game. The developers are not to be blamed or commended for who they listened to, but for the decisions they made.
Esports influence means nothing in a vacuum. It does not determine how good or bad the game will be for casual or competitive play.
E-sport is stupid. They need to design a game for people who just want to compete, fairly, from their living room couch. Plus, don’t know why you want to watch a bunch of sweaty nerds play any game, instead of playing it yourself. E-sports already ruined dual welding in halo, so they need to get out of design choices!

Why would you want to watch a bunch of sweaty jocks playing any game, instead of playing it yourself.
It’s entertaining to see the best people performing in any competition, if you enjoy the subject.

Yeah, but regular couch potatoes don’t have a say how the sport should be played or make up the rules. They can curse out the refer and that is pretty much it. Plus I don’t watch TV anymore, just get a game and play it for myself. But I also need to start going to the local park and shoot some hoops, for myself again.

Fair enough.
I was just separating your points, as it seemed like you were making two. And I figured they were unrelated.
The idea of eSports pros having ‘influence’ on game development is a separate topic from fans who enjoy watching eSports, IMO.

I’m fairly sure that if you go out with a couple of friends to do some regular sports, then you can make up your rules how you like them, and can reach a general agreement on.
Just like you can change the rules of a video game, both through custom options, and through “honor” gaming that everyone in the group will follow.

Yeah, but that doesn’t dictate the major league sports and their rules. Nor should the voice of the few (esporters) effect how the game is designed. They removed dual wielding because esporters didn’t like that, or added sprint and ADS because they were trying to attract them. No, just no. 343 should make a game for the regular Halo fan, who want sprint and ADS removed and bring back dual wielding, (those are my preferences) among other things.
