Update: This looks to actaully be happening from looking at the screenshots in the latest news post
tl:dr - Discussion on whether being able to see what equipment your enemy is holding is a good idea for Halo Infinte.
After reading the January update and interpreting that the equipment in Halo Infinite will be some kind of upgrade on the Halo 3 equipment system, it got me thinking of experiences in Halo 3 and how they could be improved.
The main thing that came to mind was to make the equipment the player is carrying visible for others to see.
What I mean is, just like the player’s secondary weapon which is visible on the players back, perhaps the equipment could be attach to the players outer leg (or else where).
This would give you the extra information you need to understand whether to engage an enemy or not. Just as if you see a player with a rocket launcher strapped to their back you would be extra cautious.
There were many a time when I thought “yeah this guy’s just got a BR, I’m sure I can take him”. I start winning the fight and then BAM! Health regen to save the day. If I knew he had it before engaging I may have thought differently about the situation in terms of; if I got closer before engaging I can use their regen to my advantage, but also if we’re mid range in a big open space I may choose to not engage directly.
I guess a counter arguement is that it is meant to be the element of suprise that turns the battle on its head.
I’d like to hear what your thoughts are on this subject and where you would place the equipment.
Bonus Content: What if the players grenades they held were visible too, so you could see if they have ran out or are using stickies. hmmm…
In general id say yes.
We already see the weapon and if he has shields or not. Thats the big impactful things.
Why hide the minor things then?
It rarely had an impact if someone has thruster or holograms.
But i think it would be hard if not impossible to display.
In most cases you cant even recognize the type of armor in battle.
How should 343 represent a small element like nades or a little chip that shows us if someone has holograms or radar jammer?
It could ruin a lot of atmosphere if everyone has a red/green or yellow glowing light on his hip.
And it must been seen from every angle otherwise it would be wasted effort.
And in most cases it didnt help at all.
Certainly not at range. And in close combat you often have no choice at all other than to shoot.
The times it help should be very very rare and only capitalized by the very good players.
Wouldnt hurt. Wouldnt help.
There are a lot more important basics 343 has to manage before wasting time with such little nuggets.
I love both these ideas. Seeing grenades/equipment on people would 1. Be useful information wise like you said and 2. Just look cool. You get rewarded for paying close attention and being able to figure out your game plan before engaging.
On one hand, much like seeing what weapon your opponent is wielding, seeing their equipment would be helpful as far as information gathering during/after combat goes. You could make an informed tactical decision more accurately if you know exactly what they have on them.
On the other hand, I think that in most situations you would know what the enemy has regardless. In a 4v4 situation, assuming power weapons are highlighted like in Halo 4 and 5, you would be able to tell whether your team or your foes have acquired the equipment. I also feel that it’s take away from the benefit of having said equipment. Part of what makes equipment effective is being able to use it at a moment’s notice to gain the upper hand. Equipment isn’t supposed to fight fair, it’s a table turner.
I think this means that there will be ways for the opponent to counter it, whether that means it can be seen on the user or it takes a decent amount of frames to actually deploy the equipment.
> Equally important is how the equipment feels on the opponent’s end. Not only that it’s balanced, but that there’s engaging counterplay or clear telegraphing that give players on both sides an opportunity to display skill mastery.
To be honest, so little sidekicks like you can see the grenades your teammate/enemy got when you look closely to them would be awesome.
I already loved the small, but important extra from Halo Reach, when your Spartans ALWAYS used the knife from his breastplate to kill the enemy with an assassanation. You saw clearlyy, that the knifeslot was empty and in his hand until he sticked it back.
Hope to see things like that again, cause dissapearing weapons are… bad.
oh no messa dissapearin

I agree with you here yes, there are a lot of other bits that are much higher priority than something like this.
I am however also a sucker for attention to detail and little quirks that for most people may go unnoticed, but a few may use it as an advantage

I’m happy either way that equipment is coming back, even if it remains a suprise element, but part of me would also like to see some kind of counter to it.
I guess it also springs the question should everything in the combat mechanics etc have some kind of counter?
The discussion deepens… hmm…
So from the latest on the multiplayer reveal (waypoint news post) looking at the screenshots it appears that the equipment may be visible after all!
Screenshot 1 (Grapple hook on forearm)
Screenshot 3 & 8 (Object on orange Spartan’s leg)
Not sure what that is on the orange Spartan’s leg, but I’m going to guess it’s some kind of equipment.
I’m happy if this is true!

The deflector shield (forearm shield) appeared on the Gravity Hammer Spartan’s armor prior to usage. I assume it means most of them will be visible in some shape or form, though some seem to be more evident than others.

On one hand I agree but on the other I acknowledge that its kind of exciting to not know what the end of an engagement will be because maybe your enemy has a secret card they can play. I’ve always liked the potential to surprise enemies with moves or grenades that they assumed I didnt have.
As a player who is definitely not the most amazing at multiplayer I will absolutely abuse my tricks if given any aha
