I’ve always envied the moderators’ ability to implement memes into their posts. Why can’t the average Waypoint user have the chance to share some visual humor, as well? Why not grant this capability to only the most active of users as a reward for being so dedicated and loyal to the franchise: the Spartan Gold/Onyx rank? If your biggest worry is that some inappropriate memes might come through, I feel people who use Waypoint so much would know better than to troll and could be considered the most trustworthy on the site, and even if they decide to post inappropriate content, the site could filter out the bad stuff like Safe Search does. You could even limit each user’s number of memes per day to 1 or 2 to prevent trolling or meme overloads(unlikely considering how many people reach these high forums ranks).
So what do you think, could this work? Could you trust the community with such a powerful source of media? Share your thoughts!
I would love to be able to… oh the memes I could come up with…
So, we’re calling images “memes” now?
My worry isn’t that people would post inappropriate images. One would have to be a very dedicated troll to get to Spartan Onyx without getting banned along the way. It’s difficult enough that anyone posting inappropriate things would at worst be a mild inconvenience.
Why I really wouldn’t want image posts on Waypoint is that it gets spammish and obnoxious real fast. My experience of the internet is that people are too eager to crack a joke to stop and think whether they actually should. With the Spartan Onyx population, do I think we could manage it? Probably. There aren’t very many people with that rank. But at the end of the day, it’s not a feature that adds anything meaningful to the forum discussion. We don’t want to encourage people to go off-topic, and if jokes are the first use case for the ability to post images people come up with, then the the ability isn’t conductive to meaningful discussion.

That’s a very good reason, thanks for commenting.
To be honest, the word ‘image’ escaped from my mind, so I was wracking my brain trying to remember what they were called, so I thought, “they use memes a lot, I’m sure the word ‘meme’ would suffice.” It obviously didn’t
Not sure I personally want people to have another reason to chase rank here. It causes enough problems with spam as it is. It should be about making the most of what you post rather than chasing a specific post count.

This. Totally this. And I don’t know, I kind of like how clean and efficient Waypoint looks and feels. It’s kind of chic. I feel like too many memes would start to make it feel cluttered and messy. Not to mention probably slow down my browsing because I sometimes check Waypoint on my phone, and where I live I can be in an area with super fast internet, or suddenly super slow and clunky or even non-existent (there’s a canyon that goes through where I live, and internet kind of sucks here anyways).
( ._.)
My only opposition to it would be that it might start to bog down the page loading, but there aren’t that many Spartan Onyx ranks compared to the rest of the site. I agree that we should have meaningful discussions, but that shouldn’t mean that we also can’t have a little fun every now and then.
It would be nice, but definitely loading times could be affected. I imagine our community managers sometimes regret or have a hard time searching for that one perfect meme for the occasion.
I agree that it is probably unnecessary. I have a friend and on Facebook he comments only in Spider-Man cartoon memes. He has no idea that it’s not funny and I guarantee he’d do it on a site like this .
He does play Halo so I hope he doesn’t see this. Or maybe it’s better if he does.
You can always post links. Gets the point across without being a visual mess.
Use shortlinks. If someone wants to see your image they will click on it.
