If I remember correctly – the Elites left the covenant. In Halo wars 2 you can play as Atriox a Brute. But you can use Elites…?
Am I missing something or…?
The Banished were a force that fought the Covenant before the Covenant had met its end from the Human-Covenant war. It would seem the most common theory behind it is some elites joined Atriox’s forces before the Great Schism even occured meaning the hatred between the two species hadn’t reached the top and so some elites were very much content working for Atriox who had a lot of power.
To my understanding the elites and brutes have always had beef going on, but the Great Schism was the turning point and so that is where the bloodthirsty hatred arose from which is what we are used to in the games. But seeing as the Banished has never really been mentioned and no one has really heard about them, it is very possible to have some elites offering to work for Atriox.

It’s all speculation for now, I don’t know if that is true but everyone else seems to think that’s the most logical reasoning behind it. The elites are very effective in the beta!
