Did they at one point have hooves? I looked up their wiki entry and couldn’t find any mention of it. In my opinion their feet looked quite cloven in Halo 1 and 2, but less so in Halo 3 and Halo wars and then not at all in Halo Reach (I’m pretty sure their toes bend in assassination animations if not in walking animations as well). However in Halo 3 and in Halo 2, when the Arbiter is stripped of his armour, his feet still look like they are cloven. The last level in Halo 2 also has a subtitle which reads “Your -Yoink-, My Size-24 Hoof”.
So was this just retconned out over time? I personally liked that touch, it made the Elites seem more alien, without resorting to the generic reptilian humanoid.
Although, hooves or no hooves, Elites will always be badass land-sharks in my heart.
Looking back at all the previous models, they always looked like toes to me. Reach just reduced their bulk. Personally I’d like to see them stick close to the Reach feet but add a little more bulk.
I kinda thought they were more of a saurian foot, considering the evolution and obvious inspiration for the Elites. Plus, the shoes/boots/coverings they wear on their feet aren’t very good at hinting what is underneath them. It would be like an Elite reasoning that our feet were big flat slabs since that is what our shoes look like.
