There are many things I feel make Halo campaigns timeless. One important factor is the A.I. of the enemies, specifically the Covenant… but even more specifically the Elites!
Admittedly I haven’t played halo 5 as much as the other games, so my opinion may be even more biased here, but I don’t recall them being as competent (esp when it came to self preservation and recovering shields) as the elites in halo ce and reach. I remember feeling like this in Halo 4 too. I’m basing this off heroic difficulty, funnily enough Halo 3 had the worse enemy encounters with regards to this in my opinion (those Brutes tho…).
Blue elites shouldn’t present much of a challenge but I do love how fighting with mid-high ranking elites felt like a duel.
Hopefully 343 draw inspiration from the behaviour of these elites and this new slipspace engine can do them justice.
In reach they hunt down spartans. In H5 they walk around like they have no will to live they barely fight in the cutscenes.just look at the end of the first mission.
From my limited experience with Halo 5 and moderate experience with Halo 4 elites just seem like bigger bullet cushion grunts. AI seems non-existent. In fact any sort of AI seems non-existent.
reach elites are probs the most realistic version of the elites. their movements in reach actually match their leg designs, something i think the other halo games failed to capture. they do huge side-steps, doges and run really fast, basically fast movements in general and really showed the lethalness of elites.

Agreed, although HCE Elites are actually pretty close. I’m thinking of those times when there were 2-3 Elite Majors strafing while firing their plasma rifles. We must keep in mind that Reach was a throwback. Plus the Elites in Reach lost their dramatic flair with their sword swings and nade tosses (although these are performed significantly faster as a result, they’re almost like MP players).

If I’m not mistaken and remember correctly, then it could be because the AI team for Halo 5 was probably the smallest team directly involved in the game, if not the smallest team overall in the whole process, some 6-7 people. Doesn’t feel like that team size was enough for the entirety of the game and its many entities.
As for Reach elites, I don’t have fond memories of them. My basic memory of them is draining their Shields, them roaring and doing a suicide charge to kick my guts in, reminding me of Halo 2 brutes.

Yeh…I think that’s because 343i oddly turned the Elites into some kind of Brute species so they never seemed to walk or act like Elites anymore.

well it shows, too this day Halo CE on legendary has some of the most fun AI.

Same here, I always hated how the Halo: Reach Elites played, they move way too fast, they have WAY TOO FAST of Melee Attacks and are way too accurate on their grenade throw (and they throw grenades way too fast too) some will even rush you and one hit melee kill you with a lightning fast jab and there’s nothing you can do about on Legendary and Heroic.
They’re easily the most frustrating version of the Elites to play against, they are not fun, I’d take back CE and Halo 2 Elites in a heart beat, Infinite needs to draw from those for Elites, not from Reach. And then cut out some of the stuff they added in on Halo 5 like jackals being able to melee and Hunters being able to parry explosives like rockets and grenades.

I honestly think the Elites would have been more well-received if we had encountered them as Spartan-IIs, with their increased durability, movement speed, jumping height, stronger melees, and faster shield recharge rates. Pitting pathetic Spartan-IIIs against an army of souped up Elites was a fit of madness on Bungie’s part.
Agreed about the faster nade throw. I liked the dramatic version, it’s surprisingly intimidating. I think the faster nade/melee animations could be enabled through a skull which swaps the current animations with faster, practical ones resembling real human players.
Hmm interesting, I’ve never been afforded the opportunity to play H5, which Jackals are able to melee? Marksmen or shielded? What are the required conditions for it to occur?
The Hunter parry ability sounds like an improvement over the raised shield ability carried over from Tank Forms. Hunters have always been too easy to beat, even in Reach with their increased durability. Increasing their health doesn’t bring out their true potential.

This for sure. I’m
Halo 4/5 have more bullet sponge tactics. Previous halos ( higher ranked elites, especially in reach) had a good AI and didnt throw themselves toward you instead the hit behind things and stayed mobile with small attempts of flanking when you were busy.
