So I got a elite controller and it’s awesome aesthetically, it has a nice feel to it and is definitely good quality but dear god do I hate it (or it hates me) my K/D has been suffering ever since I got it. When I got it I thought I was going to have the most feared gamertag in Halo history, not at all the case, I’m absolutely terrible with it. The paddles are way to sensitive to be useful so those are just sitting in the case and I’ve tried a range of different combinations with the thumb sticks and sensitivities to no avail. So my question is it me? Or do I need to change more settings? I’ve tried messing with the accessory settings but that stuff is like a foreign language to me I don’t know what any of it means and I’m afraid to mess anything up further. Anyone have a layout they like and could give me some pointers because I love the controller itself and I don’t want it to go to waste but I’ve had it for a couple weeks trying to get used to it not messing with it too much but I feel like I’m constantly getting out gunned even with adjusting the deadzones and all. Maybe I’m just crazy…

Give it time it took me about a week to get used to it. There were times I’d use the paddle then the face buttons. Now it’s muscle memory I never hit the face buttons. Reaction times are insane now. It’s not going to magically make you a pro though

^this.
I have it as well, and the paddles are extremely sensitive. If you double tap the sync button (green button on the front) you can disable the paddles. I would suggest doing this until you get used to just holding the controller. Otherwise there will be a lot of accidental paddle taps. Once you get the feel for it, map the paddles, and experiment in customs. It takes some getting used to. You have years of muscle memory to overcome (using a traditional) controller. But once you get used to it, you’ll find the paddles offer a quicker reaction time.
I haven’t even used my paddles yet… I play bumper jumper traditionally so I might have to switch back to default controls to make the most use out of them.
I’ve got a regular controller and when I first started halo 5 i used one controller button layout and it took a couple weeks to change to a better scheme. I would assume an elite controller may take at least a month to use and get used to as there’s more than button layouts you’re getting used to, but the overall grip on the controller.

Yeah, I played some battlefront with the paddles and would always “press all the things” in a flinch situation. I was jumping, reloading, and switching weapons around every corner that had an enemy. Luckily you can pop off the paddles pretty easily, or just deactivate them.

Yea the weight of it is something to get used to. I bought the elite charging stand kit from PowerA as well, and that beefy battery just packs on that much more weight.
Ah I didn’t even know you could disable them that’s cool see learning stuff already but yeah the reaction time is a heck of a lot better with the paddles I do think they will be very beneficial when I get use to them but the feel of them has just been throwing me off so much another thing does anyone know anything about the stick settings under the customization settings I can’t remember what it’s called but there was like “default, aggressive, smooth etc” anyone know what that does/means?
Takes some time to get used to the paddles, I finally have and I love it. I only put 1 small paddle for dash and I find the controller is easier to handle when I play on a solid chair(arms resting on my legs) as opposed to being lurched back on a couch.
It takes time constantly switching dead zones will make you worse and worse. Pick the dead zone and get used to it. It will be frustrating but switching settings every week puts you back to square one.
I had to take the paddles off because I just couldn’t get used to it. I do like the hair trigger locks and feel of the controller though.
I use a Scuf and had the same initial reaction. It’s not going to make you’re movement all that much better (especially if you play claw) but the ability to have a solid grip on the controller and still be able to access the movements without having to risk losing some critical aiming is the real draw. It won’t make a bad player good, but it can make a good player better.
man I’m glad it’s not just me lol by a small miracle I was able to get one last night that someone reserved and never picked up and I was playing like crap with it. I kept panicking and pushing all the things lol

Like he says, it won’t magically make you better. I had a scuff and was Meleeing faster before the elite came out, once it did come out I got one and it took me a few days to get used to it but it is fully functional for me now and I’m faster with it than the scuff(Scuff had paddles on the back before Elite came out) THe Elite is more sensitive but you still have to press it, I use 2 paddles not four. Hope this helps.
what i am in the middle of doing is im only using two paddles right now, had the controller for about two weeks. im going to give it a noter week or two before i add a third paddle, that way im slowly adjusting to the paddles. I play green thumb, so the two paddles i have now are for crouching and jumping. reloading and changing weapons i try to avoid doing them near an enemy anyways. Also if you have ever played with kontrol freeks i see no reason why you shouldnt be comfortable using the longer thumbstick on the right side.
I have two of these bad boys and they really are worth the price. I have played with a scuf for some time so it kind of was like muscle memory for me. But I remember when I first got my scuf I was having a hard time training myself to not use face buttons.
I use two paddle configurations on mine with the left pad mapping A and the right mapping B. I found it better to look if my jump button was mapped on my opposite side.
I also went into the accessories app and turned my right sticks sensitivity curve to Smooth, and have seen an improvement in my games though it took me about two days to get use to the fidelity of the aim acceleration.
The point I’m beating around is that even though it is a solid piece of equipment…doesn’t mean it’s going to play the game for you. Pick a profile, set it up, run a few games with family and friends and see what works for you. Have a Wargames profile and and arena profile. I have a foot soldier profile and a vehicle profile where my sensitivity is high and my acceleration is low, helps me get far away snap shots with a tank and gives me enough snap for my warthog gunner position.
Have fun, and don’t worry about the “get good now” sticker it tries to get you to believe. It comes in time and with practice.
I have one too and I feel like it definitely improved my game. Here’s my setup:
- In-game > Bumper Jumper, 4 sensitivity, 3 aim acc., 3% inner, 12% outer, hold to crouch, maintain sprint ON, auto-stabilizers OFF
- In Elite options > both sticks set to “smooth”, upper right paddle = X (thruster), upper left paddle = A (sprint).
- Turn on the hair triggers and adjust the sensitivities so that pressing it will still charge weapons like PP.
- Since I only use 2 of the paddles, I took off the short paddles and move the big paddles to the top parts. All the other parts are the normal ones.
Literally can feel a huge improvement immediately. At first it was a bit tricky to get used to because I had use the button mapping app for the standard controllers to basically set up Bumper Jumper but with X as reload and B as thruster, but after a day I’m used to it. I feel like the biggest difference came when I switched the sticks to “smooth”. I think that the controllers themselves (not the game) have an issue when the input is not 1:1 as you move towards the edge. It changes speed based on how far the stick is pushed, like a hardwired aim acc. feature. Personally, I hate the X1 controller since the moment I got an X1, but the Elite has change all that for me. It’s just SOOOOOO much better to have custom options.
With elite controller my gameplay has gone better. Its so easy to use those paddles and new button layouts. I have 2paddles in swat and all 4 in other gamemodes.(I got it few days ago) . But if you have problems with paddles and you wanna use them, try first one, then 2 etc. Maybe then you get good feeling to it…
My advice would be to do as others have said and give it some time… all that muscle memory does take time to reset.
I’m an older gamer, so some things tend to take longer for me. Add to this the fact that I have small hands, which means my fingers tend to naturally rest very close to the paddles. But I can tell you that I’m actually getting used to this controller faster than I thought. In fact, I wouldn’t go back to no paddles now and I haven’t had the controller long, only a few days before Christmas.
Here’s what I’ve been doing. I added the rear paddles first and played a few sessions, while getting used to holding the controller in a way that didn’t have me bumping them constantly. Once I started to settle in, but before I got “too settled in” I added the front paddles and did the same.
It will take time to reset that muscle memory and relearn how to hold the controller, but I can honestly tell you that I found it worth doing. Also, I’m finding it easiest to play SP modes for “training”. Less likely to panic and start just pushing buttons or bumping paddles by mistake… and IMO… getting the moves down well, while you’re training, will make you less likely to make those ‘panic mistakes’ when you’re playing MP and under more pressure.
As for the deadzones, I’d say look at the graph when you’re choosing one. Moving the ThumbStick will display what will happen with each setting when you’ve selected it. I’d suggest moving your TS both quickly and slowly in order to see the differences with different settings and imagine how that will affect your aiming and/or movement in game. Then choose one that you feel will best compliment your gaming style or habits.
For example, I tend to wait… often a bit too long… before I start moving into/out of situations in game. This usually makes my character feel “slow to get going” when I decide to make a move, so I chose “Aggressive” for my left TS, which helps counter that. I also tend to set my look sensitivity higher than I probably should, since I don’t like not being able to turn quickly when I need to. Of course, that means I’ll have trouble with target acquisition since the higher sensitivity makes me over compensate when tracking targets. I chose smooth for my right TS, which seems to help with that problem.
I do agree though, that you shouldn’t switch them around often and doing so will make things worse. Nothing wrong with trying a different one, but give yourself time to adjust to it. Just because it feels weird and “doesn’t seem to be helping” doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t doing what you’re wanting it to do. It’s just as possible that you’re so used to playing in a way that compensates for a missing feature, that it feels “off” when you finally can set it to perform more like you prefer.
Hope something in there helps and congrats on the new controller. Just take your time with it and know that if I can get used to it… anyone can. lol

When I moved the large paddles to the top paddle buttons, it gave the feeling that I just need to “squeeze” the controller to press them. In the default position it feels more like a button.
Honestly don’t expect to use more than 2 paddles at a time anyway. Most games map stuff like reload and switch weapons to face buttons, it’s only important stuff like jump or take cover that you need an extra button for.
I also recommend making a “default” control scheme, one you would use to try a new game or just navigate menus where everything is the default setup, then set it to 1 of the 2 channels on the controller. Then if you get confused you can switch back and play normal anytime. Also useful if you say, switch all the buttons but have trouble getting around menus.
