So I played H3 and H4 on bumper jumpers because of how important it is to be able to jump wile aiming. But then when the H5 beta came out I used default because I realized how the COD-style, Left trigger smart scope was really helpful. And because the dashing ability became more important than being a skilled jumper in H5. So I rocked the default for the beta a got really good.
Then I heard about the Elite controller having the paddles and I would never have to take my thumbs off the sticks again! I’ve been playing with it for about 4 days now and I love it. There is a bit of a learning curve to get used to using the paddles over the buttons. So I played the campaign before jumping into multiplayer.
After trying a few different layouts, here is the setup that works best for me.
I decided it was important to keep the jump and thrust combo in my dominant right hand (Jump on top). Hitting jump and thrust together can make and attacker lose his aim easily. That leaves switch weapon and reload/pick up weapon to my left hand (switch weapons on top) and it’s been working quite nicely.
The elite controller IS NOT going to make a bad player good. But with a little practice the WILL make a good player better. Making it well worth the $150 (if you have a job) for a player that spends many hours playing Halo or any other FPS.
I’m curious to know what other elite controller players are using.
Yo I completely agree with you on this. I was looking around as well to see what kind of setups people are using. We have almost the same setup except my left bumpers are opposite as yours. X on Top, Y on Bottom (yet to try it out though). Seems like these two options would be best. Have fun with your controller, not many people have them;)
I dont have one yet, but will be getting one by feb. Currently Im using my 4 paddle ScufOne which is the -Yoink-. A friendly FYI, Scuf is the original controller made for this purpose and is what most MLG FPS players use, as Scuf’s are approved for professional play (they’re not modded). Ive been using Scuff for years but am willing to give the elite a try. So far I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints from vets saying that the elites paddles are too sensitive.
Your button layout is making me question mine now. I do like having sprint assigned to a paddle instead. Hmmm, I’ll have to change things around. Your logic is sound.
So far loving the Elite controller, one thing i also did was change the right thumbstick sensitivity to instant and have found aiming to be more fluid.
I’d play it the following but I can’t adjust for the angle-bug with it. Can’t go back to a regular controller because I can’t button map that till I get the new OS, which I had before I bought an Elite console bundle… So locked myself out of Halo because of the controls );
I digress; 1) Regular Controller, Crouch on Toggle, Stabilizers on Manual Using Default H5 buttons, swap A with LB and X with B.
What this does is make LB jump and A 'nades, Thruster X and Reload/Action B.
Though not completely optimal, it is a BJ-Recon Hybrid overlayed on default. I have found it not perfect but near perfect in allowing fluidity of H5’s mechanics and is very familiar between multiple FPS IP’s.
A bit of an issue with Hover-Trick Jumping/Clambering but if you’re someone that has learned not jump while already scoped, Stabilizers on Auto will fix that.
2) Elite Controller, Crouch on Hold, Stabilizers on Manual
Using Default H5 buttons, swap LS-click and RS-click, use X on B, Right-D on A, Up-D on X, a single under-paddle on rightside LB, a single under-paddle on leftside A.
Alrighty THEN, now what do we have?
We have:
Don’t need all 4 paddles, but of course if you can handle the extra 2, by all means, expand. LT - Jump/Clamber LB - Thruster LP(2) - Smart Link
I run Helljumper but i didn’t use sprint on the paddles instead i put melee their because i kept having trouble with my dash/ground pound clicking the right stick I have a disability when it comes to bending my thumb so pressing it constantly gives me issues, The downfall is i still have to use A for sprint.
LS on scope, what foul sorcery is this? Are you a magician, or a madman?
I have P3 (left) on scope and P1 (right) on Thruster, not game to take reload and switch weapons of B and Y yet as I already press the paddles accidentally too often.
I am still trying to get use to having the paddles there, I keep hitting by accident. Right now I just have top paddles in place, and as soon as I get use to that I plan to put the bottom paddles back in place.

I’ve just thrown myself in at the deep end stuck to warzone for a while something is different with the sensitivity for me i can’t fathom it. How have you guys set your sticks up.
My elite controller arrives tomorrow. I am stoked. Way back in the day on the original Xbox, I used the “fps controller” for Halo. So im already familiar with the idea of using paddles instead of face buttons. The severe downfall of the fps controller was it was extremely cheaply made, and fell apart after about a year. I’m very excited to use this elite controller as it is extremely sturdy and we’ll made. My dream come true.
My bottom left paddle will be my x button. My top left will be my b button
My bottom right paddle will be my a button, my top right will be my y button.
I use bumper jumper. Going to be extremely amazing. I cannot wait!
So I’ve mapped
sprint to upper right paddle
thrust to lower right paddle
change weapon to upper left paddle
reload to lower left paddle
Its taking some time to get used to it, but I feel with this set up I never have to take my hands off my thumbsticks allowing me to aim in all situations

It just comes down to retraining your brain
Muscle memory will always make you default back to the original buttoms you are used to so for me its bumper jumper
I still find myself hitting B to reload sometimes, so I just have to retain myself to use the paddle instead
