Effective use of Pulse Grenades

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the pulse grenade and/or an effect method to use them in multiplayer?

From what I understand is that it takes your shields, but you can see it from a mile away; thus avoiding it all together.
It has all the benefits of a grenade, but none of the kill. Atleast in my experience

if a guy starts to run and there is a bottle neck area throw the grenade there to block his exit. he can run through it but has the chance of getting blown up if he timed it wrong and then also loses his shields allowing you an easy kill

Think of it as an area of denial tool. Works great on choke points or when defending an area. Makes easy clean up kills if they walk through it. Plus if a user has no shields then throwing it directly at him he will get killed by the drain.

I like that strategy, but I don’t know how often people just run away. That is a rarity
