Hey whatsup everybody. I play Anders pretty much exclusively. I’m still pretty new to this game (been playing about a year now). I’ve got my General and TS ranks in the 30-40 range, and I’ve pretty much been relying on Gauss Hog-focused strategies up to this point.
In case it matters, I normally build 2 Pads > Reactor while building 5 Hogs and get Gunner + Heavy Supply Pads when the Reactor finishes. Sometimes I build more Hogs before upgrading my base, sometimes I don’t. From what I understand, this is pretty much standard Anders play.
I want to expand my abilities as a player, so I’m interested in hearing some early game strategies for Anders that DON’T focus on Warthogs. My friends who I have learned from have given me some advice, but I wanted to kinda open this question to the community because I feel I’ve improved enough to start getting feedback from more than just my friends.
gunner warthogs will beat these early game units if microed properly and in good numbers;
marines
flamethrowers
grunts
jackals
cyclops
banshees
rebels(including rebel bases)
ghosts
choppers
other warthogs
gremlins(only if you seriously outnumber them of course)
hunters
elephant(if you have a lot of hogs)
spartans
covenant leaders(using D-bomb as well)
brutes
suicide grunts
elite honour guards
so the question here is; why would any one bother making any other unit besides warthogs?
if you want more unit variety play 1v1. warthogs are still necessary but on hook maps marines and flame throwers are needed too. mid game is usually about tanks or hornets + counter units. late game is more focused on tanks + wolverines/cobras/hawx.
the only way I can think of to break the mould is a monumental buff to infantry health and damage.
> Gotcha, thanks. I really don’t play 1v1’s at all but I may look into it a bit.
anders is particularly strong in 1v1 so I don’t think you’ll have much trouble. brute is really common too so you should find out good counter brute strats for all maps.

there arent any good “no hogs strategies” as anders. Like RPG said hogs will beat most if not all early game units. Also you cant just sit back and build up straight to scorpians because when you are playing a cutter or forge they will outtank you no matter what (assuming that you are both untouched) because of the economy advantage they have.
So yeah , you are kinda forced as anders to make hogs and delay the UNSC enough to gain the scorpian lead or you can focus on double teaming the enemy covenant and get massive airlead and eventually win the ground war aswell.
On maps where you can double base at the start (EG Exile) Gremlins + hornets are viable viable early game if you can get it running quickly enough otherwise yeah hogs are absolutly necessary.

if you make gremlins+hornets on exile you will lose to 5 min gauss from the enemy anders.

Yeah, Gremlins and Hornets seems like it’d be a matchup thing or at the very least situational as an opening, but I know that it does well against certain things (like against Wolverines intended to take out your air).
It might not be what you wanted but I have a hog strategy that will put a little variety into your builds. Build SP SP reactor reactor, you should have five hogs and gunner by the time your second reactor is up. Get grenadier and blow up your reactor for another supply pad. use the money to upgrade pads and keep pumping hogs. You can be at their base with grenadier by around 2:30… But you need to pick up crates very well or you will be short of $$$
I play with Diablo Soul a lot in 2s and on maps with reactors like Terminal by four minutes he has gauss and an extra base.

The guy was asking for Non-Hog strats. So i gave an example of one (never said it was one i used, It was something I did way back when I though hogs sucked IE when i would build hogs but the other guy would already have tanks, I’ve improved since those days)
