EAC support on Linux

Is there any good reason that the game does not support it yet?

Valve and the Linux community worked very hard to give developers that possibility and I find it insulting that 343 are acting like it just doesn’t exist, the bare minimum of politeness would be to issue a communicate about this and your plans to include it in the games and if not explain your reasons, of course you have zero good reasons to not do it so it’s easier to stay silent…

Its a Microsoft branded game running on Microsoft branded software sold explicitly with the intention of enticing more customers to continue using current and future Microsoft branded products. You don’t see Nintendo releasing PC ports of 1st party titles for the same reason.

Theyre silent because the context speaks for itself, yet Linux users are too entitled to accept that as a basis for refusing support and continually blame 343 for no sensible reason. It was thanks to 343 Microsoft was even willing to relent enough to allow the game released onto the Steam storefront, and its very likely that they would be fine allowing Linux support if it wasnt for the typical stance on 1st party development the industry largely has.

I would normally agree with this take, but MCC is an outlier among other Microsoft published titles on Steam. Phil Spencer and the Xbox team have been very interested in the steam deck and have brought more titles to the fully supported tier.

Typical exclusive shill nonsense, guess you would have advocated for the games to remain xbox exclusive back when they were xbox exclusives, now that they’re Windows and Xbox exclusive you find excuses for them not to be available on Linux, the MCC already runs well on Linux, all 343 has to do is enable EAC support so we can play online and track achievements which is a one day job if not less…

I am afraid Microsoft’s support for SteamDeck will be in the form of lousy drivers for Windows 11 on it instead of supporting Linux and Proton if possible…

The Steam Deck might be able to convince them to enable Linux support, it’s pretty clear that’s what Team Xbox is trying to do, but it’s a hard sell regardless since Microsoft isn’t just the games division. I think the problem isn’t whether or not they want to put it on Linux (as time and again the actual Devs and Phil Spencer have shown interest in it, lord knows there’s enough support), but rather it’s that old guard mentality about protecting 1st party IP’s to shill Software/Hardware.

Traditionally Microsoft only ever did ports of Halo if it was to some benefit they could use; CE PC was for the optics of Bungie keeping to a pre-purchase promise, H2V was to push GFWL, and MCC PC was the new Gamepass service (with Team Xbox just barely convincing them to use Steam as a viable market for that service)

it’s an odd situation for them to be stuck in for sure, but it’s not that big a surprise, and honestly a silly thing for people to keep getting up in arms about on the forums.

Well, we got MCC on PC and Steam by doing exactly that, so I’ll keep lobbying for it whenever I can…

No clue. But sooner the better since want to be able to play MCC on the Steam Deck someday fully instead of just campaign only.

THEY DID IT!!!

Extra padding so I can post this reply.

It seems that they indeed dit it but people are reporting issues with the whole game being messed up on Linux for now, I’m getting my SteamDeck this week, hopefully this will be fixed in the meantime ^^

I am glad 343 is bringing EAC support for Linux but I don’t really understand why this wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes (or did I miss it?)

I got it working by choosing non-EAC, so maybe there has to be a Proton update for EAC to work (there was one for both Elden Ring and Apex Legends IIRC)

Anyone knows if it’s been fixed yet?

I checked the logs and it appears that it tries to download something from a CDN but it’s stuck at 0% (hence why it seemingly hangs), so I think we’re at the mercy of 343 or Epic.

How weird, it’s been days since we’re having these issues and no communicates from 343 at all, this is kinda stunning…

343? Maybe it’s time to do something or are yoi waiting for the push of the next major update to release the fix?

I’m starting to think 343 is doing this on purpose so MCC doesn’t work out of the box on the SteamDeck for revenge on Valve or whatever…

Well no clue what there doing but I guess it’ll be supported eventually. I think Linux is just picking up more interest these days plus most designers probably are more familiar with Windows or Mac. I’m mainly wanting to play it on the Steam Deck someday and Steam Deck is pretty popular at the moment so be crazy if 343i didn’t support it. Though Steam Deck has peaked my curiosity about Linux.

Supporting EAC for Linux shouldn’t take that long, especially for a big studio like 343i, once the process is initiated it takes a few hours to properly implement, I was generous and gavr them a few days because I know they’re not doing only that but it’s been weeks now and 343 has still done nothing and gave zero news about it, this is really bad PR in my book and this makes me think it is intentional on their part because as a Microsoft affiliated studio they have to represent Microsoft’s interests by borking the Linux version with their goofy patch…

Yep well it is what it is. I still recall how long they left MCC broken and untouched for years so I’m not really surprised it’s taking as long.

No reason but there production woes id imagine. Its looking like they may have it in sooner rather than later though given the steam deck rumours.
