E3 2013 Trailer Still Has To Be Relevent

Hi everyone,

I’ve been scratching my head recently attempting to get my head around what could be happening in the universe post Halo 5/Halo Wars 2. I’ve still got plenty of the books to read (uni life in the way), but with most of them being prequels of sorts I’m sure only some of it will be relevant in the long run.

Now, I think it’s universally understood that Halo 5 underwent extensive rewrites at some point (this isn’t me bashing it, just stating facts), hence why Hunt The Truth doesn’t seem to fully match, the TV ads with Locke vs Chief not leading up to what actually happens in game, and the E3 2013 Trailer not being relevant at all to Halo 5.

Now, the more I think about it, I believe that a lot of this was never intended to just advertise Halo 5, but Halo’s future as a whole. The original E3 trailer finished with just the words “Halo”, with the Halo 5 Guardians added in later. We knew before Halo 4 that there was a new trilogy coming, but this was updated to “saga” when Halo on Xbox One was announced.

It is my belief that the scenes viewed in the E3 2013 Trailer, and potentially interpretations of the Chief vs Locke ads have yet to be realised in the current timeline. Whether these scenes appear in “Halo 6” or even after, I’m not sure, but I don’t think they’re as irrelevant as people make out. In E3 2013, Chief’s helmet is cracked, the very crack that Locke causes in Halo 5. At the end of Halo 5, the Infinity is scattered, leaving the Chief and co with limited resources as they plan their next move. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that Chief doesn’t get his helmet repaired very quickly. In both iterations of Chief vs Locke ads, the Infinity is shown being in ruins. Again, with Infinity on the run, it’s not unreasonable to assume that she finally meets her demise at the hands of the Guardians.

In my opinion, Chief may end up doing something considered traitorous, or treasonous, at the expense of Infinity and perhaps even the teams at hand (I’m not saying they’re all dead, just in high danger), to lure Cortana out, or to perhaps buy himself an opportunity to go on the offensive, and Locke disagrees with his reckless methods (he doesn’t like Cheif’s luck). There were some theories that E3 2013 takes place on the Arc. I still believe this could be the case, but whether the Guardian is a manifestation of Cortana or Mendicant Bias (more likely of the two) or something else is up for debate. I think Chief will need to go dark, to disappear under Cortana’s radar to make his way to the Arc for backup, which might be where Anders on the new Halo ring comes into play, if she isn’t captured and can find a way back through another portal. This way we would be fighting Covenant (banished) again, and maybe even flood if a distraction is needed. Either way, the Arc was out of Cortana’s reach, so it makes sense that any buried Guardian is still sleeping, waiting to be activated and utilised. Fight fire with fire, and if a forerunner AI wants to join the fight then all the better.

To sum up, I think that the E3 2013 trailer has yet to actually happen, along with the consistent points made in both the Lock vs Chief ads.

Anything to add? or am i digging too deep for no meaning?

You could be on to something.

Or the 2013 E3 trailer could have just been concepts for Halo 5 that were never implemented. Wouldn’t be the first time (Halo 3 trailers, Halo 4 trailers, Halo 2’s announce trailer, etc.).

I think Phil Spencer more or less said it was just kinda a “concept” trailer for no Halo game in particular. I think trying to map out a narrative from it is doomed to fail however with how much things can change in game development.

While you may well be right, see what you think of this.

Halo 2’s announcement trailer was essentially the end cutscene of Cairo Station minus the bomb (back when an extra level was planned), but notice how the same outcome was achieved in game? The Halo 2 E3 Demo level was essentially the Earth levels just ramped up to 11 with Brutes already active. Now, we still had levels on Earth, fighting our way through the cities and the highways.

Halo 4’s announcement trailer basically works out to be the first level of the game-getting out of cryo, fighting his way through, and seeing Requiem for the first time. The subsequent trailers offered live action, with gameplay, and I can’t find an example of where any of that didn’t make it in game, or was later retconned.

Halo 3, similar. The Starry Night trailer didn’t happen exactly, but in game similar happened. At the end of the Storm, Chief is on a plateau and see’s the arc portal raising up for the first time, which is the main takeaway from that trailer.

Now, this E3 2013 trailer seems to be an outlier at the moment, unless it lines up with my theory. In Halo 5 chief wasn’t ever by himself, nor was he ever in a desert environment with a cloak, and he never woke up a guardian. I can’t even think of a point in Halo 5 where this scene could have been reimagined to be used in game, which still makes me think it’s a teaser of things to come.

Halo 4’s Scanned trailer, where Didact scans Chief and Chief has flashbacks of his life, never happened in Halo 4. We saw every interaction between Didact and Chief in the game and at no point did he capture Chief and suspend him in a tube for interrogation.
The Halo 3 Starry Night trailer didn’t happen; the only thing used from that trailer was the location, really. Chief never woke up on a battlefield and ran into a bunch of brutes like he did in the trailer.

Hell, Halo CE’s original demo was pretty different from the finished product (no sword wielding and no antenna on Chief’s back).

Point is, Halo trailers have never been totally in line with the finished product. Some stuff from trailers makes it in, and some doesn’t. There’s no reason to thing why that wouldn’t follow for Halo 5. It’s possible that more of those concepts from the 2013 E3 trailer will be used in the future, but it’s not certain, not even likely. We got a cracked visor and redesigned Guardians; that’s the limit of what made it from the E3 trailer into the finished product. Speculation is fine but don’t put too much stake into fan theories.

A final point of order: that 2013 E3 trailer wasn’t for Halo 5 specifically. It was merely an announcement for Halo coming to Xbox One, which ended up being MCC first. While that fact can lend itself to the thought that those concepts could potentially return for future Halos, it also lends itself to the thought that it was all conceptual and never meant to be 1-for-1 represented in the games.

You make a good point Chimera, admittedly I had forgotten about the Scanned trailer, but it’s perfectly true, that didn’t happen (unless, of course it happened when the Didact grabbed chief and suspended him, but that is pure conjecture on my part and am in no way arguing it to be true). Also good points on the Starry Night trailer too.

Halo CE’s demo is so out there and strange I’d almost discount it entirely, as Halo was still finding it’s identity and establishing itself in the world.

The rest is also completely true though, and the only thing we can do is wait to see what happens next.

Here’s hoping for a teaser for the next instalment some point this year!
