This has kept me up many nights. I need to get it off my chest.
How is it that in Halo 2 and 3, spartans could pick up two weapons. Like two SMGs’ or two Plasma Rifles. But in Halo Reach, Halo 4 and Halo 5 they could not.
What happened? Did they suddenly forget how to use both hands?
(I know it would be overpowered in Halo 5, like with the magnum) but it’s just something I’ve thought about time-line speaking. Suddenly the super soldiers just forgot how to use both trigger fingers.
From a lore standpoint they can still dual-wield, in Halo 4 Spartan Ops you see Commander Sarah Palmer dual-wielding pistols.
The ability to dual- wield was removed purely for game play purpose, mostly to ‘improve it’. Do we need it, not really. Was it cool, yeah.

I would imagine how brutal dual-wielding be if using Halo 5’s weapon sandbox. People will start dual wielding autos and running around the map aimlessly and getting cheap kills.

Yeah but you couldn’t use assaults to dual with in the old games. . But plasma rifles and just the standard magnum would be deadly as hell.

I know what you mean. But imagine someone doing the pistol & plasma pistol combination.

Yeah, the SMG had major recoil in the old games. So it was very hard to dual with them.

Yeah, that was harder to do in Halo 3 because the magnum was -Yoink-. But in Halo 5 that would have been so deadly. And that’s one of the points that I didn’t make it a serious thread. Like, the games change. But in the whole super soldier thing it’s funny to think about. That they can’t do it in matchmaking…
I miss this feature so much and I really hope it makes a return, it was such a cool feature and you felt unstoppable when you were doing it. They could just have it so that its only in campaign, social playlists, warzone, and a custom game option so the pros don’t have to flip out about. They can also balance it with the spartan abilities so let’s say when you sprint, clamber or charge with it you instantly drop it. They could also make it that its super inaccurate with certain weapons like the magnum so it wouldn’t be too op. Idk i really believe dual wielding can be balanced if it’s done correctly and only if its in certain playlists and the campaign and I’ll be really happy if it returns.

The problem is, now we have to balance it around two different instances. A weapon that is held alone, and a weapon that is held twice. Either the weapon is okay on its own and blatantly OP when dual wielded, or the weapon sucks unless it’s dual wielded.
And in Halo 5’s sandbox, it would be a nightmare to include Dual Wielding. Grab two SMGs and you can kill someone in half a second. Use a Brute Plasma Rifle and an SMG and it’s even faster.

So it’s okay for sprint and other abilities to get a pass with a lore argument but not dual wielding?
I mean in H2 it was either have a single, under powered weapon or pick up a second and lose all forms of accuracy. H3 was pick up a decent-ish weapon or duel wield for complete close quarter devastation.
Duel wielding would need to be balanced in such a way that the weapon isn’t too weak by itself and not too over powered when doubled up. I remember using two spikers in H3 and the only thing that could stop me was someone at range or a shotgun. Even by itself the spiker was pretty lethal in the right hands, probably the best to use out the trio, plus it had bonus melee damage.
The problem with dual wielding is that the base gun must then be nerfed to hell to prevent it from being op when dual wielded. If they could make it make the gun when dual wielded function differently from when its base version then I’d be okay with it.
I think they should bring it back but modify it. Of course you shouldn’t be able to scope but I also thing range and accuracy should be decreases and reload and recoil increased. I would also love for you to be able to dual wield and pick up a jackal shield. I think that would make it fun and interesting.
Maybe the spartans finally figured out that it is a lot easier to kill your target with one gun vs missing them with two. Realistically speaking, dual wielding is very inefficient
