Drastically Downgraded Emblem system

Straight from halopedia org /Emblems section (Regarding Halo 2)

“There are 64 emblems and 32 backgrounds, allowing 2048 basic combinations. With 18 different color options for each of the four elements of the emblem, there are more than 204 million possible emblems.”

So over 17 years ago we had 204 million possible combinations we could use for personal emblem customization, allowing us to customize the emblem in multiple ways.

Halo Infinite now has 23 or 26 (3 given to beta players IIRC) Emblems by default giving a possible combination of 23-26 by default. There is 55 emblems in total you can unlock with 0 possible combinations.
This means emblems are now only as is without any ability to modify and customize them.

In every aspect possible this current system is a direct downgrade compared to the 17+ YEAR old system we had in Halo 2.

I would recommend at least reworking the emblem system to be on par with Halo MCC.
Although a truly better version would be a combination of Halo MCC & Halo 3’s emblem systems.

Halo MCC has the largest selection of emblem Foregrounds (224) & Backgrounds (105).

Again quoted from Halopedia: (Regarding Halo 3)
“The 80 primary emblem designs, the 80 “toggles” of those designs,”
Which means every primary/foreground had a secondary toggle which would remove a portion of the emblem allowing for even further customization possibilities.

***P.S I was incorrect, there is some colour selection for your emblems you can unlock. Although there is some amount of colour customization it’s a very small number and a fraction of what it used to be. Still in my opinion a drastic downgrade.

Emblems have been on a downward trajectory for years with 343. While I am not surprised to see their current iteration of this system, it is disappointing to yet again see this come to fruition.

I would say as some one that does not spend a ton of time in the emblem customization menu that it has gotten way too generic. Though some of the past games have been way over customizable to the point where I got lost as to what I needed to do to customize my emblem. I don’t think 343 had a bad idea here, simplifying the emblem selector, as the main point of the game is the action, not the emblem. If you want to get into super detail then go make some actual art. But they did get waaaaay too simple. Simplifying it makes it easier to do but causes a loss of uniqueness that emblems are supposed to embody. When I create my emblem it should not take longer than 15 min and at the end, I should be able to feel like I created something that unique resembles me and should not have a high chance of seeing someone else with it. So 204 million is overkill but 2048 is way too little. A couple hundred thousand I think would be more than enough to accomplish this.

204 million is not overkill, it’s a result of combining all the pieces they implemented. Plenty of different pieces used to create a wide range if different emblem looks. Adding but a single one would increase the possible combinations by a lot.

Reducing the amount of combinations, especially to, like two hundred thousand would mean drastically reducing the amount of emblems you can use from, and backgrounds to very few.
If it was problematic customising an emblem, it means the UI didn’t convey the necessary information properly, or you haven’t learned it fully yet.

Wouldn’t be so bad if we could custom color them instead of just picking presets.

I would have to agree with the user Naqser’s statement. I’d argue that 204 million isn’t overkill as in the same aspect that Borderlands 2 can boast that it “has 87 bazillion guns” and not be overkill in the slightest.

Multiple possible variables (levels of customization in halos case) leads to having exponential possible combinations.

All I want is to be able to use the emblem I’ve used for literally every other halo game…

No emblems, no colors, can’t believe they thought people would be happy with that decision. I like a lot about Halo Infinite, but certain choices just baffle me.

How am I just seeing this thread now?

Yes! 100% Agree. This is the most simplistic way to give players the even smallest sense of ownership over the Spartan avatar they use.

I understand the Armor Cores, they want a sense of realism and yes, not every tech system is compatible with others. 343 have been irritating me with their gameplay changes to give that oh so great sense of “immersion” since they started.

But Emblems, really, really. There is no logic behind that. Again…It’s the EASIEST way to give customization options to the player.

MCC has animated nameplates. emblem customization etc.
Infinite is a downgrade in so many ways

Where’s my champion star -Yoink!-? And why can’t I colour it purple and gold?..

It would be nice to have something like the Emblem Editor that some of the Call of Duty games had, and to be able to change the size of emblems on the armor.

Agreed. I wish I could port my MCC emblem over to Infinite, but I cannot.
Infinite’s customization overall is a huge downgrade. I see people always with the same few colors. It truly baffles me how they marketed this whole thing as “increasing player expression like never before”.

But then how will they sell you them? Not to mention the nameplates are garbage compared to MCC.

and you can’t customize the HCS logos

Exactly that. My nameplate in the MCC is a simple H4 one with the azure color, which I think it goes well with my Scorpion emblem. Which is also colored as H4 Cortana. Its a very simple one but effective, at least for me. I stuck to that for a long time now. Its sad I cannot do that in Infinite.
