Dr. Halsey's spare brains

In her journal (November 7, 2549, the date of Cortana’s “birth”), Dr. Halsey makes a very intriguing note. She writes that the other three viable clones of her brain have been placed into cryostorage for future use “as technology evolves”. Though I doubt Bungie ever had any plans to develop this plot thread, it could easily be tied into Cortana’s talk of a replacement in Halo 4. There’s no evidence that the brains were ever taken off Reach (specifically CASTLE Base), but just imagine the possibilities if they were.

Frankly, I can’t stand the idea of Cortana being brought back: It would negate her beautiful closure at the end of Halo 4, just as Star Trek III all but invalidates Spock’s sacrifice in Wrath of Khan. On the other hand, I’m interested in the notion of an ersatz not-quite-Cortana. 343i have shown an admirable tendency to bring back obscure characters and plot elements that most have deemed long forgotten. I see no reason Halsey’s brains can’t be another example of this mentality.

Thoughts?

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

Possibly. Kalmiya was another AI developed from Halsey’s brain, and I believe she was different from Cortana to an extent. They could make a different Cortana who sounds slightly different, looks different, and acts different. They could make it work out in some way.

Though Kalmiya was used as the testbed for some of Cortana’s cyberintrusion protocols she wasn’t derived from Halsey’s brain. Cortana (to her own knowledge) is the only AI ever developed from a living human mind.

Was she? I’m going to have to read Halsey’s journal again.

EDIT: you were right. I reread parts of her journal and I looked it up on Halopedia.

I do believe they would have perished on Reach. Perhaps some ONI spook found them, but I think Halsey would keep tabs on them and notice if they were gone. But who knows?

The brains probably didn’t survive Operation: WHITE GLOVE. Even if they did, Halsey very well may have set up a killswitch in case the specimens were compromised. However, ONI did manage to retrieve her journal from the ruins of SWORD Base; their recovery teams would no doubt try to dig up whatever effects they could find to incriminate their favorite scapegoat. That leads me to ponder what ONI would do with a potential trio of quasi-Cortanas.

Be giant -Yoinks!- is what they would do.

Exactly what I was wondering as I checked the journal a few days ago. I wouldn’t mind a new Cortana. Perhaps a different AI altogether? The brains may not lead to the same AI. Something new, maybe… Joyeuse, anyone?

Though I don’t think she needs to be brought back at all, if they restore her in any capacity she should be an entirely different entity. Making her a copy of the original so that the Chief and her can live happily ever after like in your average fan fiction would horribly cheapen her sacrifice, and I’d rather not see Halo become like the Marvel or DC universes where absolutely anything can and does happen.

Joyeuse would be my number one pick. The name would have worked much better in the Bungie days, though.

No more Cortana. Pair Roland with MC.

I can see that happening if Infinity is severely damaged during the campaign (as the live-action trailers suggest). However, Roland isn’t designed specifically for infiltration like Cortana was. He’s more of an administrator than a hacker.

I’m always thinking bout those spare brains. H1, H2, h3 also she mentions John having unusual DNA,when discussing squad leadership with Mendez.I think Halsey discover the Geas but didn’t kno it yet.
