I know one of the most popular theories about why Cortana has become so power-hungry is that she’s infected by the Flood through the logic plague, but I just don’t see that happening. None of the teasers we’ve gotten for Infinite’s continuation of her storyline have even remotely hinted that the Flood are involved. On top of that, it makes practically no sense and the justification behind it requires one to do a ton of mental gymnastics. The evidence just isn’t there. I mean seriously, one of the biggest ‘sources’ people provide is an obscure document from a licensed crate that has no real connection to Infinite. I’m not trying to be rude, I just find it crazy how so many people fail to see how silly the theory sounds when you put aside your personal desires and look at it objectively.
I always thought she was infected with the Logic Plague or something similar when she entered the Domain after H4’s ending and “fragmented” herself to defeat the Didact.
BTW, what’s this “obscure document” people are referencing?
I agree with you OP. There is not sufficient evidence to conclude that Cortana was ever infected with the Logic Plague. After all, the Gravemind failed to break her. Based on what we know about the Plague, it doesn’t hide away and fester until a later time. It either succeeds or it doesn’t.
I do hope she’s infected. It would make an interresting narrative plot.
I think the nature of Infinite being a spiritual reboot would make this unlikely as well. After all, it’s meant to be a fresh start for new fans and trying to get them to understand the Gravemind and the logic plague might be a tall order when just trying to get them situated with the universe. The Flood may have a presence, of course, but even then I’m skeptical about Cortana getting the logic plague at all anyway. 343 have done a poor job explaining what’s wrong with her anyway.

There was a Halo Loot Crate a few years ago containing a documented interrogation of one of the minor Covenant Prophets, who talked about the logic plague and how it could corrupt AI. A few Halo YouTubers interpreted it as being 100% confirmation that Cortana is infected by the Flood, which is really bizarre to me.

Yeah, that’s a great point. If the Flood are introduced in Infinite, they’ll likely have little or nothing to do with Cortana’s role in the story. I hope 343 can properly explain what her real motivation is. It didn’t seem fleshed-out enough in Halo 5.

The thing about that Loot Crate document is that it was one of a series of similar documents all offering possible reasons why Cortana went nuts. There was logic plague, contact with the Covenant AI from First Strike, rampancy, and just being from Halsey’s brain. If anything, Halo 5 more or less implies her coming from a clone of Halsey’s brain is a big reason since, as Halsey said, “You know what I did to create the Spartans. All in the name of the greater good. Cortana is built from a matrix of my own mind.”
All that as if to say it’s Halsey’s mindset bleeding into Cortana’s actions. Which is odd since she likely had renounced that greater good attitude by the time she made Cortana.

I don’t agree with cortana being effected by the logic plague. but to say there is no evidence is wrong. there is a lot of interesting tid bits to build up that theory. Most of the theories require having read near enough all the books.
Afew examples of why cortana could be effected by the logic plague. One you have her being left with gravemind during halo 2. You have her being in contact with the domain which has been infected to a point. and ofc, if shes still alive shes also past her 7 years and as we saw during halo 4 was already having huge issues. If she came in contact with the domain after trying to save herself or one of her copies after the end of halo 4 she would of been much more likely to be infected at that point in time.
My theory and i feel it makes more sense and it helps justify halo 4s ending and fixes some of the issues with halo 5. Is cortana in halo 5 is not cortana. It is a a.i contract pretending to be cortana. Why? well simple because it found out in order to get things activated to control the mantel it needed a human the the ability to do it and get there in the first place, who better than master chief, and who better than cortana to manipulate chief. There are still plenty of forerunner a.i constructs out there , recent books are good examples of that. Then we have mendicant bias who could come into play with infinite.
Then spoilers ahead for “shadows of reach” , they are trying to get a hold of some biological items in boxes that were at sword base for Halsey , there is alot pointing toward Master chief activating a new Cortana that is a new version based on some of the cloned brain hasley had backed up. After all the only way to fight an a.i is to use one against it on the same lvl.
As for the flood, well we are going to halo infinite, if you know anything about this halo ring then you will know the flood and the precursors had a huge part to play on Zeta halo. There is also huge information missing in the archives in zeta halo, with a missing Monitor to boot. Funny enough flood could be on zeta halo as well as possible parts of mendicant bias. So if the original cortana is in halo infinite then there is plenty to tie her to a possible logic plague or flood conection. If its not her there is still plenty to tie who ever is pretending to be cortana to those things as well.

its not just hasley mind shes made from though. i have a sneeking feeling more and more, from recent books and just in general that she was also created from parts of a a.i construct halsey found on reach. if that were true, it could be really interesting if that part of her starting 2 take control and found a way to survive after the events of halo 4. it would explain how cortana in 5 still h as all the memories of john yet acts very different, even looks kinda different as well. We also know she built her body in a physical world but b4 that she was in the domain, and we know from the books that there is all kinds of -Yoink- in the domain, and it got damaged greatly when the halo rings fired, something that the foreunners didn’t expect would happen.

We know how Cortana was made and it was simply from a flash cloned brain of Dr. Halsey. Halsey found no AI construct on Reach.

Its very doubtful that Cortana is corrupted by the logic plague. Cortana is merely corrupted by rampancy. Although some believe they are the same thing, they are different.
Rampancy is induced by the over-accumulation of computational “memory”. AIs think themselves to insanity, and become corrupted. It takes time (roughly 7 years, depending on other factors) for an AI to become rampant. “Rampancy is a terminal state of being for Artificial intelligence constructs, in which the AI “develops a longing for godlike power,” as well as utter contempt for its mentally inferior makers.” That is exactly what Cortana is at this point in time.
The logic plague is a tactic. A flood intelligence actively uses information, logical arguments, and ancient “truths” to manipulate an artifical intelligence into doing what is in the best interests of the flood. It is a philosophical manipulation of the AIs core programming, as seen with Mendicant Bias. The flood intelligence convinces the AI that by doing what the flood wants, it is actually better serving its primary functions and programming. The name “logic plague” is actually pretty deceiving. There is actually no real infection taking place. It is merely a battle of arguments between the flood superintelligence and the AI. Since AIs are programmed and built by organisms who have flawed beliefs and ideas, they can be manipulated by superior information and revelations from those who literally created the galaxy as we know it.
Unless the Gravemind (at the time of Cortana’s captivity) both 1) knew that organics would defeat the flood, and therefore was looking for a more intricate way of defeating organic life, and 2) convinced Cortana that taking over the galaxy with an army of artifical intelligence was something that would better serve both her own programing, and well as the interests of the flood itself, I find it highly unlikely that the logic plague has anything to do with her behavior.
Her behavior, to me at least, indicates standard rampancy.

It wasn’t. Nothing of sort was mentioned in The Fall of Reach. Nothing of the sort was mentioned in Halsey’s journal. Halsey herself never suggests such a thing. Nor was Cortana made in a Forerunner structure. She used the same cloning equipment used to flash clone the Spartan-IIs. After getting what she needed, she went to CASTLE Base and used what she harvested to create Cortana.
Halsey had two labs. One at SWORD, which we see in Halo: Reach, and one at CASTLE. Just because a fragment of Cortana was at the SWORD Base overlooking the Forerunner object under the Babd Catha ice shelf doesn’t mean that’s where she was made.
There isn’t anything fishy at all.
solo quiero luchar contra el flood de nuevo
Since we know about “imprints” in Halo what if Cortana has the imprint of the Gravemind.

i will agree to disagree. u seem the kinda guy who likesthings spelt out for you and dont let ur mind wonder. thats cool
tbh why would hasley talk about how she does everything, she goes behind the oni all the time, she has her own agenda. what she writes in her diary isnt always 100% truth, we can come to the conclusion from her entire life, from the things she done with the spartan progame, to how she treats cheif, to how she goes behind oni back to get what she wants, Then you have part of cortana being made next to a huge foreunner structure, with what looks like a digital interface that we have no idea what it is or does, linked up to her work space which just happens to hold part of cortana. then in shadows of reach the most recent book with hasley in it, she recovers black boxes with biological samples, people suggest it could be more cloned brains of hers, but i wonder and ofc there is no evidence to back this up, but i wonder if she found more than she let on in that ice, and used that to create cortana.
Again, there not going to spell everything out to you. i enjoy trying to figure out if there more going on than we’re told. There plenty of evidence over the years in books and games to show that they like to mislead us. If you take everything at face value then the didact died in halo 4, humans were foreunners because the game said so in halo ce ext. I like to think there more going and its not as simple as, it says so here in halsey book.
i just hope she is infected by the logic plaque.

A few Halo YouTubers interpreted it as being 100% confirmation that Cortana is infected by the Flood, which is really bizarre to me.

> > > > > >
Which is odd since she likely had renounced that greater good attitude by the time she made Cortana.
> > > > >
> > > > > its not just hasley mind shes made from though. i have a sneeking feeling more and more, from recent books and just in general that she was also created from parts of a a.i construct halsey found on reach. if that were true, it could be really interesting if that part of her starting 2 take control and found a way to survive after the events of halo 4. it would explain how cortana in 5 still h as all the memories of john yet acts very different, even looks kinda different as well. We also know she built her body in a physical world but b4 that she was in the domain, and we know from the books that there is all kinds of -Yoink- in the domain, and it got damaged greatly when the halo rings fired, something that the foreunners didn’t expect would happen.

> > > > we dont know that, infact i would say its kinda fishy how hasly happened to create cortana in a forerunner structure. notice in halo reach how so much of her tech is linked up to the forerunner structure, its even over looking it. Then in shadows of reach book , there are portals there going to the ark and possible other locations, so to say hasley made cortana purely from her own mind, yeh im not sure about that. There is a reaosn cortana is so more advanced over any other unsc / oni A.I It would be really itneresting if a part of her mind was taken from forerunner or an unknown construct.
> >
> >
Just because a fragment of Cortana was at the SWORD Base overlooking the Forerunner object under the Babd Catha ice shelf doesn’t mean that’s where she was made.

> i will agree to disagree. u seem the kinda guy who likesthings spelt out for you and dont let ur mind wonder. thats cool
> tbh why would hasley talk about how she does everything, she goes behind the oni all the time, she has her own agenda. what she writes in her diary isnt always 100% truth, we can come to the conclusion from her entire life, from the things she done with the spartan progame, to how she treats cheif, to how she goes behind oni back to get what she wants, Then you have part of cortana being made next to a huge foreunner structure, with what looks like a digital interface that we have no idea what it is or does, linked up to her work space which just happens to hold part of cortana. then in shadows of reach the most recent book with hasley in it, she recovers black boxes with biological samples, people suggest it could be more cloned brains of hers, but i wonder and ofc there is no evidence to back this up, but i wonder if she found more than she let on in that ice, and used that to create cortana.
I’m really at a loss here because you’re arguing from a position of just making things up, you’ve offered no actual evidence and have clearly misunderstood what’s been set before you. There is being speculative and then there is just connecting dots that don’t exist.
You say what Halsey says isn’t 100% truth, but don’t explain why what she says about Cortana’s creation can’t be trusted or isn’t the full story. In fact, Halsey made her journal as a means to pen her thoughts away from ONI’s prying digital eyes. It’s why she admits to breaking numerous laws to make Cortana. Otherwise, are you going to say that The Fall of Reach book isn’t accurate because it says Cortana was made from a clone of Halsey’s brain? Are you going to say Halo Mythos isn’t accurate because it says the same? The Halo Essential Visual Guide? The Halo 4 Essential Visual Guide? Dr. Halsey herself in Halo 5? Had Cortana been created partly with a Forerunner AI then that would have been mentioned by now, especially with Cortana wrecking havoc on the galaxy.
You also say she was made near the Forerunner structure under SWORD Base. Where do you get that information? Nothing in Halo: Reach supports that and you forget the Cortana that Noble Six carries to the Autumn was a fragment of Cortana that Halsey took with her. That’s mentioned in her journal too unless we are to suppose both the game and journal are lying. What was found at SWORD Base were coordinates (or at least missing portions not found with the coordinates found at Sigma Octanus) to Alpha Halo.
I’m not sure what else to tell you about the stuff from Shadows of Reach. Halsey put her remaining cloned brains in cryogenic storage and Blue Team retrieved cryogenic containers. Speculate what you wish, but nothing there indicates Cortana being made with Forerunner AI or technology.
Could you please come back with some actual evidence and not your wandering imagination?
im not even saying i have evidence. im saying that in the past things have been said to come across as facts, but later been expanded to the point where there not true at all. i’ve been saying is if you look at halsy and her actions she isn’t really the type of person to be honest even to herself. im saying that its odd how part of cortana are built so close to a forerunner structure, to have nothing to do with it what so ever. Im saying that in shadows of reach its not actually said what are in those containers, it is never said 100% that whats inside those containers is the cloned brains. Its assumed so because it makes sense, but what im saying is what if there is more to it than that. My entire post is about just coming up with more interesting ideas, that just looking at everything in black and white.
As i said, if you just take everything at face value in halo then ur often mislead. Most thought didact died in halo 4. he did not. 343 guilty spark said " you are forerunner" in halo ce, humans are not. Most people think Cortana in halo 5 is cortana, but at the same time saw her die in halo 4. my point is things can be said but turn out to be different. Halsey saying how cortana was created could turn out to be not 100% true at a later date because of the back lash of bringing cortana back in 5 after she was suppose to die in halo 4.
yes things have gone off topic from the original op but others started taking in other directions 2.
anyawy thats all im going to go into, i feel ur the type of person who comes across kinda close minded, and already made up ur mind. im not even saying what ur saying is wrong, im just saying what if, thats the entire point of my posts, what if and examples of how what if have happened b4…
Your idea be the same after-the-fact retconning of the story to justify a bad plot direction made by 343 that people hate. Nobody would be sold on 343’s direction with Cortana if it’s revealed that Halsey secretly made her with a Forerunner AI or tech because it comes out of nowhere. You want to suggest something but don’t even bother to bring up anything 343 could point to make it seem like it’d make sense. What you do point to, Cortana being near a Forerunner structure under SWORD Base, is you misunderstanding what is going on. That isn’t where Cortana was built or made and I still have no idea where you got that from because it’s blatantly wrong.
