Continuing this series of fanmade dossiers explaining the ins and outs of Halo 4, today we look at the Precursors.

Dossier: RE: The Precursors

Overview

Reports on the Precursors are scarce and thus far have been compiled from the Bornsteller Relations found on ONI Research Facility Trevelyan.

History

According to the Relation, the Precursors were a race of highly-advanced beings that pre-dated the Forerunner Empire by millions of years. As a Tier-0 species on the Forerunner Technological Advancement Scale, they could traverse galaxies and were the cause of life in the Milky Way galaxy, if not the universe. However, this race of god-like beings had a sinister side. According to the Forerunner named Genemender Folder of Fortune, the Precursors would “delete” species they felt violated the Mantle and failed a mysterious plan.

This cycle appeared to end in the Forerunner-Precursor War, which ended in Precursor defeat and exile. How this came to be, the created defeating the creator, remains a mystery and the war seemed to be forgotten as the Mantle made by the Precursors became a key component to the Forerunner’s laws. Yet it would not be the last the galaxy would see of the Precursors.

The Primordial

Found by ancient humanity on a barren planetoid, the Primordial was a biological anomaly. Some reports stated that it was made of several species, yet appeared to be a single body with four arms, a barbed tail and a head that resembled a sea scorpion. Ancient humanity brought it to Charum Hakkor, a Precursor ruin world and the capital of humanities scientific achievements, and counseled it as an oracle. Yet when it finally did speak as humanity questioned it about the arrival of the Flood, it provided a solution so terrible it caused suicides amongst the listeners.

Humanity would fight the Flood for years and repel it with the Primordial’s “cure” until they encroached on Forerunner territory and lost a war with them. As humanity was de-evolved by the Forerunners and their head leaders Composed into genetic memories, the Primordial remained a captive on Charum Hakkor, but not before telling the Ur-Didact that it was “the last Precursor”.

1000 years later, the Master Builder and Mendicant Bias, with a Halo ring in tow, released the Primordial and brought it to Installation 07. While there it would take control of the ring and conduct vile experiments on humans who contained the memories of ancient humans long ago turned by the Composer. Installation 07 would remain rouge until the Bornsteller-Didact re-captured it and interrogated the Primordial. The Primordial would reveal that the cure which the humans thought they had and the Forerunners desired was a lie and that the humans would be tested far into the future for the Mantle. The Forerunners would be relegated to the deepest shadows of history. The Bornsteller-Didact would accelerate the aging process of the Primordial by billions of years, killing it.

Conclusion

Though still a mysterious species, the effects of their actions has had lasting repercussions for over 100,000 years. In that time, none have yet to be seen again, yet vigilance must be practiced in these trying times as they represent an ancient, evil threat to all…

Oh, hello Reclaimers. I can see you have been very busy planning ahead for possible threats. So very industrious, so much like her. Yet I have my doubts that you understand the seriousness of the threats you are likely to face. A group you thought defeated, fragmented in a way that it could pose no threat to your existence? An ancient being belonging to a race you once thought held your kind dear and yet now presents a likely foe? Even a race of beings who created you?
Most would consider such heavy planning on threats considered all around them the signs of paranoia and someone quite mad. I would disagree with the majority. The threats around you are very, very real and could end your existence quite easily. But will you realize the danger ahead and plan accordingly or delay any preparation and suffer the consequences of inaction? I hope for the former, as would she.
We have two distinct paths Reclaimers and I cannot tell you what mine is. I so do detest meddlers and I know you would try to get in my way. But I do act in your best interests even if you don’t know what that will entail. Perhaps our paths will cross? I do hope so, as I am sure she does as well.
Take head of your own warnings Reclaimers for your day of judgement is at hand.
