So this dooms day mechanic of vehicles glowing red to show an indication that the vehicle will explode has been out long enough for halo fans to give out their opinions.
Question.
Should it be taken away or left alone?
I for one would like this dooms day mechanic to be disabled and have the vehicles behave like all the previous halo titles did without this “hand holding” mechanic.
I put this topic out so people can share their views and opinions on the dooms day mechanic.
I watched a video from late night gaming showing the slight improvements to vehicles in season 2. He done an a comparison video with the vehicles from halo 3 and halo infinite. One thing that stood out was in halo 3 he would shoot none stop until the vehicles explode but in halo infinite when this dooms day mechanic starts he would stop shooting knowing that the vehicle would blow up. I dunno but i just don’t like this big indicator when the vehicles will explode.
Share your thoughts about this mechanic!
Is it really needed?
Is it fun?
Is it too easy and hand holding?
Is it annoying?
I think it’s nice to have a visual indicator. But in my experience by the time your vehicle is glowing red your as good as dead anyway.

It would be worse if it wasn’t possible to continue damaging the vehicle to blow it up faster. As it stands right now, it gives drivers and pilots an escape window against small arms fire, but isn’t effective for surviving actual anti-vehicle ordinance or forerunner weapons.
The vehicles themselves still need a bit of tuning. They feel like tissue paper. But the doomsday mechanic itself is alright… Though it would be nice if they did something more realistic with it? Like instead of making the vehicle glow, give us a solid sound and visual que that doesn’t hurt immersion. Something inspired by the Scarab’s destruction sequence in Halo 3, with the alarm and smaller explosions, or the way Covenant vehicles would freak out before exploding a second time in Halo 2, which had a cool audio buildup to the explosion (a mechanic that has been very sorely missed).

Seen too many players get insane kill streaks with vehicles to agree. They feel like paper to me but in some players hands they are monsters.
It’s terrible. Vehicles are already made of papier-mâché and giving anyone in one a huge window of escape and a comical red glow is urge icing on top.

I just feel that the vehicle smoking or on fire
is more of an indication that it will explode.
Having it glow red and the vehicle stop working is too much.
The reason why i said “he kept shooting” was not to make it explode faster but because he had no idea when a vehicle will blow up and to me thats the fun of not knowing, a vehicle glowing red means its done for so why keep shooting if i know its gonna explode.
Even when driving you feel like your taken a risk while the vehicle is smoking and on fire. You feel like you done such an great job helping bring back the flag. Now its like ok “bail out its gonna blow up” because we all know exactly when. Takes the fun out. No more risk reward gameplay.
I do find it difficult to gets kills with Vehicles by destroying them because people just bail out, this dooms day mechanic gives such a helping hand.
Also yes vehicles are still way too weak. You can struggle to get kills and then on the other hand its too easy to get kills when you have vehicle killing weapons.
Yes agree with this
its a small tweak but it would be better IMO
The whole “Dooms Day” or “charging up” thing doesn’t bother me cause it doesn’t affect my gameplay, but here’s what I think about it:
I mean, the Warthog having most of it’s armor blown off and flames coming from under the hood, wheels wobbling with smoke coming from every opening, were plenty of indicators to tell you to GTFO lol At least it was for me.
The charging up to explode with a audible and visual timer was just to let the random Free to Play players know that the vehicle is no longer usable now. It’s kind of similar to 343 patching the skillful movement around their maps. It wasn’t done because they hate skilled jumping, they did it because new players or casual gamers won’t stand a chance against a more motivated or dedicated player.
It’s all about making the game easier for the newcomers, while the veterans have to learn new things instead of forcing newcomers to learn the things that made the game popular in the first place.

I’m definitely indifferent to the mechanic. Have no issue either way. If it helps new players then eh I’d say leave it in.
It should stay, but “Vehicle Killers” also need to be buffed at the same time.
As it is right now, “Vehicle Killers” do not actually kill vehicles fast, like at all. Some vehicles can take 2 - 3 shots of the Skewer and still not instantly explode, and that’s really not okay.
Ravager and Hydra : needs lesser shots to kill a vehicle or put it into doomsday mode. I’ll say approximately 4 bursts from the Ravager or 4 direct shots (no lock on) from the Hydra should immediately blow up Hogs and Choppers. Ghosts take lesser shots to kill, Flying vehicles take even lesser. Lock on for Hydra will do lesser damage and take more shots as it currently does now.
Skewer : should destroy the vehicle in 2 shots. First Skewer weakens the armor plating, no matter where it is shot, second would instantly destroy the Vehicle. Shooting any exposed weakpoint or the pilot of the vehicle with the Skewer will instantly blow it up.
Rocket Launcher : 2 Direct hits to kill Hogs and Choppers. 1 Direct hit to kill Ghosts and Flying Vehicles. By kill I mean just blowing the vehicle immediately, if you manage to tag the pilot/passenger with the Rocket, they should die immediately while leaving the Vehicle damaged.

I’ve done some testing in the training ground and its crazy how some weapons affect vehicles. You are right its kinda messed up that some sort of weapons that should deal a lot of damage dont while others that shouldnt do as much damage do a lot.
For example, 2 rockets to destroy a vehicle to 1 swing of a grav hammer can get it done. Then you have to factor in gameplay too. Some vehicles might of already taken some damage but survive a rocket blast but not a hammer smash.
I always wondered about how vehicles acted liked in halo CE. They would take a lot of damage to make them explode and they balanced this OP vehicle health with players die while sitting in the vehicle.
When players get shot out of vehicle’s they are up for grabs on the map. Making for risk reward and fun gameplay that would turn the balance of the fight, rather than the fight being too one sided, having one vehicle be too OP and when the player dies so does the vehicle.
I honestly feel like they put it in specifically to make the explosions look fake and non frightening to get a T rating. I mean what other logical reason is there for this strange shift from explosions to Toy car explosion with LEDs.

Vehicles have a place in BTB but shouldn’t be an overwhelming presence like CE’s. CE was really unfun for Heavies because the constant presence of a Scorpion tank is straight up unfun on any map. You ever spawn on Timberland and you get instantly killed because some Scorpion camper is just blasting your base entrance.
And when you finally do kill them using the sniper, another turd takes his place and continues the siege. Atrocious.
Yea ive been there but would rather this (not as bad as you explained) than every vehicles explodes when the pilot dies.
Lets say a bit like CE but the vehicles wont have too much health but not like infinite were they seem way too weak.
Its hard to explain but it does need balancing.
The way i look at it is that vehicles would be a power play on the map that can be up for grabs to shift the balance in gameplay but at the same time not be too OP that one team can just keep hoping in the same vehicle and destroy the other.
Gawd i can still think of the days being destroyed by warthogs on rats nest or the gauss hog on standoff or in halo reach someone was playing with KB&M the banshee was way too OP.
Its hard to find the right balance with Vehicles. How they function, how they deal and take damage and how they maneuver on maps. Hopefully 343 take the fans feedback and in time the vehicles will be better soon.
was better when vehicles started smoking then caught fire and finally explode.
new engine effects make it seem like a downgrade rather than an upgrade.
